Schedule: Spring '01

Schedule of Activites, Student & Group Numbers, Debate Topics

The numbers in the description below correspond to the student numbers in the table below the schedule. For the two class days each week, the first day will be spent in general discussion, probably based on the position papers. Presentations will be given the second class day each week. Note that the reading assignments listed for each week must be read before that week, since your position papers on that material are due the Friday before each week begins. For example, your position papers on Ch. 2 are due on Friday 1/12.

Debate Topics

You may change topics if everyone in your group agrees. If everyone in your group agrees you may also choose sides ahead of time. By default the side of the issue you argue will be decided by a coin-toss. The advantage of this approach is that everyone sees both sides of the issue, which makes for a more interesting debate.
Debate Groups Debate Topic
A vs B Big Brother Bart - monitoring
C vs D Spread the word - Distribution of personal information
E vs F Bound to fail - Software that just will never work
G vs H You're not getting my microcents! - Finding one's own design on someone else's Web page
I vs J The Freedom To Use Cryptography
K vs L To toad or not to toad ... - Netiquette in a MOO
M vs N University warns against e-mail sales Tech tackles student scalpers for Sugar Bowl Tickets
