4401 107th StreetMy husband Bill Gilmour and I live in the Okanagan Valley, about one mile from the US border. This area is said to be the north end of the Sonoran Desert. In May 2003, after each of us spending about 10 years in the federal political arena (where we met), we bought an old orchard that we plan to convert into a vineyard. We love it here, and also spend a lot of time traveling. I really miss Mexico and my friends there. We had a lot of good times. My family moved to Canada in 1976, just after seventh grade.

Summarizing 20 years is a challenge, but in a nutshell, I went to college in Illinois then moved to Texas for about 5 years where I got an MS and became a registered dietitian, got married, and did a lot of traveling. We then moved to Colorado where I earned a PhD in nutrition and spent the next 10 years teaching and doing nutrition counseling, while pursing old hobbies such as running, volleyball and hiking, along with new hobbies such as skiing. A year ago we relocated to Charlotte, where I am a part-time professor at the University of North Carolina and part-time sports nutritionist to the UNCC athletes. Mostly, I am Mom to a 3 and 5 year old! I'm disappointed I missed the reunion but would love to attend any future gatherings.

After graduating I went to North Park College in Chicago, majoring in English and Computer Science. I worked for a year after that, but had the sense that something was wrong... I finally figured out what it was - I only got one week vacation. So, I decided I better head back to school. I went to grad school at Northwestern (Evanston IL, just north of Chicago). I couldn't get any financial aid if I applied for the Master's degree program, so I applied for the Ph.D. program. I got my Master's degree in '87 and largely due to the academic inertia of having been in school for most of my life, I continued.
While still (supposedly) finishing my Ph.D. (Piled Higher and Deeper), I started teaching full-time at Loyola University in Chicago in 1990. I discovered that I liked teaching very much but was not very excited about "research." I had been hired as a tenure-track prof. at Loyola, which basically means you've got 7 years to produce lots of post-dissertation results, or else. I ended up with "or else", since I didn't even finish my dissertation until 1995. (It was a painful experience, getting that done, and I had bad dreams about it for a couple of years afterwards.) I switched in '96 from Loyola to the University of Illinois here in Chicago, where I am now. I love my job, as I get to teach, constantly get to learn new things, and get to have an impact on the lives of my students.
What I was really excited about during those years I was supposed to be doing my dissertation, was meeting my wife Desirée. I had gotten very involved in the church I was going to (Vineyard Christian Fellowship) and was playing guitar and leading one of the bands. Desirée was one of the vocalists, and, well, we made beautiful music together. We got married in '91, and have a son Justice (6), a son Forrest (3), and a daughter Tirzah (1). Yeah, we go for the unusual names.
Desirée is a full-time child development consultant (she's a stay at home mom). She teaches piano lessons out of our home. In our free time we're currently heading up the music program (with a small army of volunteers) at a small church here in Chicago. One of these days we'd like to move somewhere with warmer winters.
