WOWWWW! WHAT A GREAT RUSH TO SEE EVERYONE AGAIN! I was touched to be a part of such an awesome bunch of people as all of you and it hardly seems that 20 years have gone by since we last saw each other. The weekend was an eye opener for me in certain respects:

1) Ana Ceci, Ramon, Cindy, Dale, David L. and Cindy P's (forgive me if I skipped someone) hard work and dedication to put together an unforgetable weekend. You didn't have to do it but you did and I thank you....

2) I have taken my health and time on earth for granted. Throughout the weekend, I met several classmates who have had serious health problems. I am both amazed at the courage they are showing in getting the most out of life and full of prayers for their recovery. They remind us that our time here is only borrowed and I've resolved to really focus on the present, enjoy my loved ones and use my time wisely to build friendships and live without regrets.

3) Georgina: your comments about my daughter were touching. thanks. Congrats with your beautiful family.

Sammy - It was great to meet Sarah! What a special little girl she is. She is definitely ready for kindergarten. In fact, I think that she's ready for second grade! LOL! During the school tour, I taught her how to use a lock. Her response was, "Oh! So you have to know those three numbers to open the locker." Then when I showed her my old locker, she said, "What are your three numbers?!" Very bright child! :)

What a MAGNIFICENT WEEKEND we had!

Ana Ceci, Ramon, y David: Mil Gracias !!!! Se sacaron un diez. Lo justo es que la proxima vez ustedes sean los invitados de honor.

Fue una experiencia increible verlos a todos otra vez. Cuando David Noriega nos escribio hace algunas semanas and said: "this is a once in a life time experience" he was NOT KIDDING! No es posible escribir lo que senti al ver a cada uno de mis grandes cuates de nuevo. And one of the best parts was spending time with people that I never really spent time with before.

Everyone is so amazing and beautiful. What a fantastic group of people! I truly believe we are lucky to be part of such a group. I'll quote what Francisco told me as we said goodbye: "Thanks for being a part of my life...".

Sammy: You're right, creo que la pila no me va a durar for a whole year, perhaps a few months. And I'll have to try hard. We'll have to get together soon!

Cindy: What can I say, I so enjoyed visiting with you on Sunday. I never quite realized how similar we are. I'ts so nice to know you're there.

Karen Jaris. Some classmates didn't want to come because they believe we were never a true class, we were never united. I didn't come here because I believe we were united, I simply came to see all of you and to learn what became of you.

Dominic Christian when offered a glass of wine: You know, if there's one thing I've learned all these years is STICK TO YOUR GUNS. Mesero, otro whiskey por favor.

Scott Odabashian: I was a little on the fence, deciding to come or not. But that chat page got me.

Claudio Gantous: It's not about what you have done, or if you're successful or not. The mere fact of being alive is a good enough reason for celebration.

Jodi Philpot: When I got to my room after the dinner, I cried and cried. So many memories and feelings coming at me at the same time!

Prof. Lapadat: All of you have done very well, at a professional level and at a personal level. Problems? We all have them and they will always be with us.

Alex Loya: We really have to pray for some of these people. Some people here are really, really lost.

Julio Zamora: There's something about this school. I wasn't too close to some of the people in this room, but you can bet I'd do anything to help any of them if they ever happen to be in trouble.

Francisco Ríos: All of you are part of me, and I am a part of all of you. I am you and you are me. Because of you, I am who I am. And I want to thank you for that.

Where to start, where to start...What an amazing time I had, back in Mexico!

First of all, a huge thank-you to Anacecilia and Ramon! You put together a really incredible, memorable experience for us all. A very big congratulations to you both. And now, you rest!

I have to admit, I was a little nervous about returning to Mexico. I hadn't been back since 1987 (way too long), and I had such wonderful memories of living there, that I was afraid those would change, after all this time. WRONG! The city looked fabulous - much cleaner than I had remembered, landscaped so beautifully, the big busses were gone, and the people are still the friendliest anywhere. Plus, do I need to go into the food? We ate (and ate, and ate) all of our favorites, and yes, even went to Costco in Acapulco to buy cacahuates in bulk. You should have FELT my suitcase coming home!

I think that the relationships we created in our youth, are irreplaceable, because they help us define the basis for our personality, and they become the standard by which we create future relationships. I'm still amazed at how many of us have kept in touch all these years, and thanks to the reunion, how many new friendships were made.

Anacecilia - I'd like to get a class photo and video. I'll e-mail you separately.

Twenty years later, I have to say that we have all aged well! We were/are a good looking group!

Thanks to everyone for the laughs, the hugs, the wild dancing, the tequila, the fun. I look forward to our 25th!

The weekend was fantastic!!! For those of you who unfortunately could not make it, please do not miss the next one (25?). I found the whole thing to be so therapeutic. Laughing, remembering, reconnecting, visiting the places where we grew up together, letting go of uncomfortable memories, etc., truly coming full circle. The warmth expressed among everyone was truly inspiring. People who didn't hang out together 20 years ago related with each other as though they had been close friends (Hasta Dominic bailo conmigo). Saturday was so wonderful meeting all of the beautiful children. The taquiza was a class act. The best food and great drinks, and what a beautiful place... My daughter Sarah had a great time playing the classic Mexican children's games and she picked up on the songs and rules very fast. She became fast friends with David Rae's daughter Meredith, Georgina's daughter Rebecca, and others. I am sure as messages are posted the details of the events will bedescribed in greater detail. Thank you Ramon and Anacecilia and all of you who also helped out for a hugely successful reunion.

Only a few more minutes till we meet at MP. The waiting is finally over… The anticipation, the thrill, the mistery, the suspence… Like a child waiting for Santa at Christmas… I just hope I will not be disapointed like when I would get underwear and socks intead of the 10 speed bike I would always ask for!!! Carol: What a great news! I will pray that you may soon enjoy the most fascinating miracle in one's life.
David: It will be good to see you. Over the course of the past years I have been mistakenly taken to be you. In fact, a few years ago I was eating sushi in a Miami restaurant with my family. Across the restaurant I noticed a somewhat heavy-set man entertaining a Japanese businessman. Sometime during the dinner someone came up behind me and gave me a hit on the back yelling "Laird!". When I looked back I noticed it was the heavy-set man and that was John Villalba! When I told him that I frequently got confused with you, even in high school, we had a good laugh.

Lucky Elena, she get's to have a double dose of Fuentes's in one week (LOL). Did Felipe mention to you that we ran the NY marathon together? Actually, we had talked about it for about a year and we both started training for it. Although typically it is recommended that you run at least a couple 20 mile runs prior to trying a marathon (26.2 miles), Felipe went only as far as a 13 miler. To his credit however, he did finish it which, no matter who says what, is a great accomplishment and a testament to his determination and fortitude. I suspect the signs that read "Free beer at finish line" and "Oprah did it" may have had some motivating effect as well.

Dale, yesterday I had the real pleasure of meeting Alex McGrath for lunch here in Miami. Besides catching up on the "big stuff" (job, families, life path), it was amazing how quickly one can rekindle a friendship after 20 years of separation. We both agreed that we would not have been able to pick each other out from a crowd; confirming my daughter's claim that I looked weird when they paged through our Anahuac.

Carol, David y Joseph. I couldn't be happier for you. Porfa cuidate mucho! I'll send you a video of the reunion.

David, I heard from your aunt that you were coming with Sophie and I was very glad. I know you have a big wedding to attend to too, asi que que mejor! I'm sorry to say we canceled the visit to the museum. It was just a bit too much. However, if you have time to go, do go to the Papalote. Sophie might be a little small so ask what she would enjoy best. Vale la pena. By the way, ya llego tu pago y tu boleto es el 110. The only organized family event is Saturday morning (1:00) school visit and then the Taquiza. Say hi to your mom for me.

I don't know how many of you are left to actually read this and not on your way to or already at Los Panchos, but for those that are left I just wanted to say I can't wait to see you, those that will be there, and I'm sorry we'll be missing the rest of you. I'll be getting in tomorrow night with my daughter Sophie. Unfortunately my wife won't be joining us as she has to stay to take care of our second child, who God willing will be born a week or two after Sophie and I get back.

I've sort of been scanning these messages and it's great to hear all the news from so many old friends. Of my old gang some of you probably know Scott O will make it, and Craig D lives there so he'll be there, too. Did Paul Cadena post a message with his lame excuse for not being able to come?

Ana Ceci, will there be any events for families? I know at one time there were plans for a Friday morning museum visit. Is that still on?

Anacecilia - Sorry for not e-mailing you. I have had a VERY EXCITING last few days. I just found out that I am pregnant again. This is nothing short of a miracle after 8 years of infertility and a miscarriage last year!!! I am 6 weeks along and praying that this pregnancy will be full term. I am so thankful to God for this. You don't know how he has answered my prayers! I just re-applied to return to work part-time at Lockheed Martin and was praying to God to please let me know what it was he wanted me to do. I was uncomfortable about retuning to work - and then found out I was pregnant!! I believe this was a really clear answer to my prayer. THANK YOU JESUS!!!!! By the way, my e-mail is cdw91@yahoo.com.

I just wanted to echo Paul C.'s (hi Paul, this Peruvian is in Wisconsin!) message and wish all of you a great reunion, unfortunately I cannot make this one but will shoot for the next. If any of you find your way to Milwaukee, even if just to watch great basketball, do look me up. Look forward to seeing posted photos from the reunion.

I haven't kept up with the message board - and now I don't think I have the 4 hours needed to read all the messages!

I'm excited to be seeing everyone (my wife Desiree and I arrive Friday). It sure is interesting to think back to being in high school, and where I thought (then) I would be in 20 years. This seems like one of those events that helps mark not just the passage of time, but an evaluation of where-am-I-going-in-life as well (I'm getting philosophical thinking about this here...). Twenty years ago I graduated from high school. Twenty years from now I'll be thinking pretty seriously about retirement, and my 3 kids will almost all have graduated from college.

If I'm going to make it big as a punk rocker, well, it's already too late for that. Ditto for politics. Though it sounds trite, I think I've discovered that it is perhaps harder to change myself than it is to change the world. I think I've learned some of my limitations in the last two decades.

Occasionally I visit a high school and think to myself "Since when did such young children get to be in high school?" I'm a teacher myself, and lately I've realized I'm old enough to be my students' dad. I'm imagining getting to the reunion and thinking "who are all these middle-aged people", that is until I realize it's me!

Remember how in high school it was pretty rare to have friends that were much older and much younger? Now I find that I have friends spanning 3 decades. The telescope of time at work. 1981... No ATM's, CD's, and the first PC was just coming out.

There are treasures sometimes hidden by wanting to be a different age. I'm so enjoying being a husband and dad, coming home and Tirzah, my 2 year old running up with a welcoming smile and outstretched arms obliterating all thought, or the unexpected joys of hearing Justice, my 7 year old describe in detail how he is going to be famous and rich after inventing the car-airplane-boat.

I think back to the AHS, and would wish this upon *my* children. Great friends, great edukashun, and a chance to live in the intersection of cultures.

I share the apprehension that at the reunion I will not recognize my once good friends. I hope we have the old pictures on our nametags!

Maria (I think) mentioned the idea of posting bio's. I'll second that idea. I don't suppose that salivating for tacos al pastor will make the plane fly any faster, but if so we'll get in early.

To practice for this week, we had a mini AHS gathering here in Dallas. Many local alums said they'd make it but in the end it was only Stewart Kneedler, Felipe Fuentes, Carolyn Kurtz and I. We had fun. Stewart looks great, works for an insurance company. Carolyn just moved here 6 weeks ago. We'd hoped to see Mike Sherck who just moved into the area but ...

Cary & John: I bought myself a length of rope to practice my "figure eights". We also got my fiance signed up for a class on June 6 so we can go to local climbing walls together.

Kelly, Kelley and Donna, I am soooo jealous thinking of all you unescorted women on a rampage in Acapulco. Not fair to be missing all the fun. Enjoy!

Cary: I live in Miami. Waterskiing sounds fun. I used to do it quite a bit in Acapulco. Last time I tried it however I discovered back muscles that I had not used in nearly 20 years.

Just a few days go by, and the messages pile up!
Mike Bhuler: for the apple, come to the AHS Saturday at 13:00 and I will be happy to teach you. (My two boys still think it is a cool trick, so all they eat are 1/2 apples!)
Ingrid: We would very much like having your husband call to see this appartment. It is in Roma Norte, very central and convenient. Call 5286-1707 for an appointment. If you want to rent or buy furnished, come soon! I put in an add in the "Trato Directo" for after the reunion. There are nice pieces of furniture looking for new owners.
--The "exotic car" my dad would drive the lot of us up to the school in was the 1958 XK130 Jaguar, black, convertible with red leather seats!!! We had to let that go when we would not FIT!!! My dad, Cristy and Ed all measure 1.82, Linda stayed at 1.65, but my 1.72 is a fair medium.
--After my grandfather passed away (1984-Florida, maternal) we inherited the 1978 Pontiac Catalina, which I went to church in for my wedding (Both my sisters copied me).
Our son flies home on Saturday afternoon, so we will be leaving after the AHS visit for him.

My 8 yo daughter bought a cd by Creed, sounds a little like Pearl Jam and at times like Bad Company and we sat down to learn the lyrics to “With Arms Wide Open” (excellent song). We listened to the song 30 times and finally got it right, I haven’t done for a looong time, that was fun!

Mike M.B. – The freehand climbing was circumstantial…we didn’t have the gear! I later learned from a friend how to rappel and that is wild! Since I had kid’s I’ve really calmed down, I want to be here for them so I stick to water skiing. Where do you live?

Having two boys, ages 11 and 7, rarely does a day go by where I do not look
back on my own school experiences and see the similarities. Like today, we
went to the American School Kermes here in Lima, it had the jail and other
games like we had at the AHS and the boys had a blast.
If anyone ever makes it to Peru to visit Machu Picchu, we would like to hear
from you.

Man, tequila prices have gone sky-high!!! I think I'm going to change to mezcal, con todo y gusano... Then again maybe not!

I have been enjoying friends and family over the last week. I have still not been pulled over by a mordelon, and I am sad to report that my Mexican driving abilities have all but vanished! I guess I've been driving too long in Europe! Another thing that has come back to my mind is the increadible amount of traffic in this city! I will never complain about the tiny backups I sometimes run into back in Belgium.

Well, like many, I had been unsuccessfully trying to lose my love handles before the reunion, but after all the delicious food I've been eating think I am now heavier than when I got here! Cary: I used to be quite an avid freehand climber as well. Actually moved to take advantage of all the great places to climb (and I was much more svelt at the time). Then my wife got a job down at the Boulder Community Hospital and saw one too many head injuries so I was convinced to learn how to use belts and ropes. Needless to say, I found that much more difficult to learn as I had to learn how to trust someone to "catch" me should I fall. Well, got into it for several years and then shattered my ankle sliding into third base during a softball game. Unfortunately due to the time off I took to heal, I lost a lot of my strength and started gaining weight. Needless to say, it was an uphill climb again and I haven't scaled for a while.

Elena: Climbing is great exercise and exhilerating. Hope you learn to love it.

Mike Buehler- I hope to see you at the reunion. The last time I saw you was when you took me home after the prom because my date was so plastered.

Didar – Yes! we played in the counselors office in middle school, but I only remember a she counselor. I was looking at pictures and I remembered this when I saw yours, wow…what else have I forgotten?

Fer – ¡Bienvenido! Don’t bother with anything that doesn’t say “100% Agave”, if it doesn’t say this, then it may say “Doble Destilación”, these tequilas are not 100% Agave. The commercial brands I enjoy other than the ones mentioned by Sammy (I don’t care for Don Julio though) are Corralejo (tall blue bottle) Herradura Reposado and Herradura de Plata. The only good Cuervo is “Reserva de la Familia” which is Añejo and quite expensive and don’t bother with Sauza.

Kelly – The truth is, we do more of the hotel thing than the camping thing, both are great fun.

Elena - I did some climbing a while back. I remember climbing a rock free hand up at Lagunas de Zempoala and at about 35-40 Mts. I realized I couldn’t go up, down, left, or, right, I looked at my partner and he smiled and said, “I can’t move”. After about 10 minutes of deciding what to do and getting the “family jewels” in place, I made a move and all went well, but wow, that was scary!

Cindy – I found a picture of you in middle school and yes, I asked you out and you said no :-( and you dated Tim Parker.

Mike – Sounds great! we could con on a “light” camping trip and if not, we can go on a boat ride through the Mayan canals, hopefully the boat will be ready.

Maria – I like your Buddhist approach.

I probably won't be in touch any more. I'm leaving for San Diego today to take a course on ultrasound. I'll be there until Friday night. We'll be leaving for Huatulco on Sunday morning from LA so Saturday will be pretty hectic for me trying to pack everything. Nos vemos en Mexico!

Let's see, my goal is to A.Recognize, B. Remember,C. Catch up on the past 20 of the life of, D. Discover the ultimate purpose of having reconnected with.... at least 100 people who have in one way or another affected my life. No Sweat.

On the other hand I may just try the Buhddist approach.... I will go to the reunion with the singular objective of Being there. What a weight off my shoulders.

I loved hearing about what Alex McGrath does and wish I could read a paragraph or biography of each person at the reunion and those who are not there as well. By the way Elena R. my son Alec is into rock climbing. Last year at the father son camping weekend at our local scout camp he was the first 'first-grader' ever to reach the top of the 70ft. rock wall.(With Hoist of course). He was high for several days on the adrenalin of being encouraged and cheered on by all of his buddies.

Ramon: Great move to post the tips for the reunion. I guess it will be like my wedding, we'll have a great time, it will be over quickly, and we will have forgotten to eat by being so busy trying to meet and connect with as many people as possible. I'm looking forward to introducing Tessy to those people she's heard stories about for the past 13 years. In addition, after being a travelling nomad the past 20 years, something inside me yearns for catching up and reconnecting with the people with whom I've shared my most formative years. It hasn't been until I've come first circle and see my daughters going through their early years, that I realize that the AHS was an incredibly unique and rich experience. Where else does one meet some many people with such a varied background and yet get to grow up together and share some pretty incredible experiences? I'm glad for this chat page as it really will enable us to cut the ice and be a bit more in synch with each other.
Cary: I'm planning a vacation to Cancun in August (around the first/second week). Would be great to visit you and maybe we can even go camping one evening (it will take some major convincing of my wife, but I'll try).

I got a call from Beto Valner he will be attending both Friday and Sat. Unfortunately his wife and 3 children (3,7, and 9) will not be able to attend. He lives in LA and is in real estate. It was great to hear from him!! I also recieved an e-mail from David Rae, he will be attending as well..

Regarding Javier and John P., Anaceci, Javier's wife is days away from having their second child, and John Pike was going to be in Mexico and was going to try to make it. I have no idea where he is now. He is very much like the Pike of old. If I can track him down, I will encourage him to come and to PAY ASAP.
I was surprised to see the names of those who have not payed yet. Many of them I believe live in Mexico. Don't they know that Ramon Ricoy is about to disappear?

I just spoke with Francisco Rios, after 15+ years. We were inseparable from 5th through 10th which is a long time at that age. I spent the first five minutes trying to convince him it was really me, he thought it was his brother Alex playing some prank. "I'm Alex but I sure ain't your brother."

When he finally believed me we spent maybe 15 seconds just laughing our heads off without saying a thing. Very exciting for both of us. And yes, he promises to buy his tickets (one person, Fri and Sat apparently).

Kelly, I work for… a dot.com! No, my full time job is as a designer at a small information technology company, basically planning and designing interactive apps. Information kiosks, catalogues in CDs, presentations. Some intranet and web pages, that type of thing. It (usually) pays the rent.

And five years ago a friend and I started a small shop. We bind books in leather, basically high-end Bibles. Just the type of business you'd want to be in this mad cow/foot and mouth disease era. Worse than being in a dot.com, but let's see what happens. I'm there once a week.

In the 70's and before you could find good quality Bibles, but then publishers started to make really bad quality stuff, with terrible leather. So the idea was to make a product "like they used to" and they're turning out very nice. We sold our products here in Mex at first, then to South America and then to a few small publishers in US and Spain. We recently closed a deal with one of the big boys, Nelson Publishers, binding their "Signature" top-of-the-line Bible. So maybe, just maybe, I'll get to see some profit before I die.

We have about 40 workers, craftsmen really, and everything is done by hand, virtually no machines. As low tech as you can get. Most workers are single mothers who would have a hard time finding a job somewhere else, others come from an alcohol and drug abuse center and are trying to redo their lives. Some make it, others unfortunately don't. And why did you ask? How about you?

Mike B. I'm going to be in Miami next week. Will you be around? I'm going to be busy and I know you're a busy man, but maybe we can have breakfast together or something.

Elena Thursday night the plan as I understand it is to meet at a bar called "MP" around 8 pm. It is just behind the Nikko hotel at Calle Andres Bello #10.

In the yearbook you were remembering a fun weekend in Cuernavaca several weeks before graduation.

Everest, but Dallas has a lot of indoor walls to play on - and boy do you ever get sore and tired! Not that being our age has anything to do with it, right?

Reunion Survival Guide
HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR REUNION

Preparing for a reunion is both mental and physical. It may be just the thing to force you to lose weight or just the thing to drive you to a psychiatrist. Like any major or important event in life, it's best to plan ahead, and these five simple points will help make your reunion virtually painless.

Take a walk.
You probably don't think about high school every day, so take a walk down memory lane. Remember what it was like to walk the halls and say hi to your friends on the way to the math class you hated. Flip through the pages of your yearbook to bring back all those names and faces you pushed back into the darkest corner of your mind.

Make travel plans early.
If going home requires travel plans, get started ahead of time. You'll have enough on your mind and don't need to worry about transportation or who's going to take you to the air port. Planning ahead will save you money on the air line ticket and give you some peace of mind before the reunion anxiety hits.

Go with a friend.
Going with a friend will give you a nice sounding board before getting to the big event. You can bounce nervous energy off each other and get it all out before you even walk in the door. The pressure is always lessened when you have someone to laugh with and it's nice to meet up through out the evening to compare notes, remind each other who to talk to, and give eachother a little pat on the back.

The primary goal.
Reunions can be overwhelming, so narrow down the goals you hope to accomplish and shoot for one. If your goal is to talk to as many people as possible, go for it. If you want to talk to the guy you had a crush on in the 11th grade, then talk to him. Don't put things off because you'll never do them. Have a specific goal and follow through. (In other words, don't wimp out!)

Have a positive outlook.
Remember what reunions are all about: reuniting. It's not about the party, the food, or hitting on your old boyfriend. Reunions are about reconnecting with people you grew up with; people who share a common bond through time. These people knew you when you were nothing (or everything) and want to reconnect with you to know that you turned out all right. Keep this in mind, and you'll have the best time possible.

Cary - Howling monkies and eating what you catch...now THAT is really camping! I would be voted off the island in "Survivor". My idea of camping would be leaving all my things and going to a 4 star hotel...so with the pop-up, we don't rough it much. We eat what I bought and marinated from the grocery..my chardonnay is properly chilled from the mini fridge, and we bring good paper for the port-a-potty! I guess I can't call myself a camper....YOU really and truly camp. Either way, great memories for the kids! They love going and playing in the water, dirt, hiking, eating hot dogs, roasting marshmallows, etc. No, we don't canoe. I have been known to sit and sun myself, on our friend's motor boat when they bring it along!

Hi from sunny Mexico! We’re finally here! On Sunday the plane landed 20 minutes early (miracles do happen!), but leave it to the Mexican authorities to ruin something good: By the time we got out of the airport over 2 hours had passed. You see, 3 jumbos from France, Germany and Holland arrived basically at the same time, and we were all forced to pass customs through 2, count them, 2 counters. Then to make matters worst, only 2 of the 4 exits were open in the parking lot, which implied an extra half-hour of waiting in line. Any way, when we left the airport we were greeted by a good ol’ embotellamiento trying to get onto el viaducto… I have still not gotten pulled over by a mordelon but I am almost looking forward to it:
- Joven, se paso el alto. Permitame su tarjeta y su licencia.
- Por supuesto oficial, usted porfavor permitame sus lentes.

- Cual licencia!!

Since I’ve been here (1 and ½ days), I’ve had some tacos al partor, alambres, de costilla, de bistec, y una buena gringa! I also had pollo en mole, and I am lookig forward to some delicious guacamole con tortilla recien hecha en la tortilleria for lunch today. Man, I’m telling you, we are all going to go back looking like blimps, with those of us staying longer looking like the Zeppelin kind. But then again, who cares?

Cary, thanks for pointing out the bad link in the communities site, I finally got around to fixing it. I did used to play some chess in 8th grade (7th for you). I remember Juan Serrano '79 would come from high school to beat us middle schoolers. Our middle school counselor (who was he?) was our main chess supporter, which was rare in the middle of the so prevalent jock mentality that was circulating ASF those days.

David N - Didn't we play chess during recess in 7th or 8th grade?

Kelly/Mike – Those are neat campers, luckily Lupita and I love camping and before we moved to Cancún we still back packed it, it’s kind of hard in the jungle (we miss the high lands) and with kids, no way! So we throw everything in the van, stay by the beach and use a tent. We thought about buying a pop-up camper, but thought we’d let the girls have the tent experience for a while. The luxurious upgrades have been a table, chairs, lantern and now a gas stove. What’s real fun is going with the guy’s and each others kid’s by boat up the coast, into the jungle on the canals, fishing and cooking what they catch and camping wherever, they love it! There are a couple of places that have thousands of pink Flamingoes and as the sun goes down the howling monkeys start roaring, but they sound more like lions. Maybe someday we’ll get a chance to see a Jaguar, that would be great! Do you guy’s do any canoeing?

Alex/Mike - Peggy Watts dolls! No...please…I may end up playing Barbies with my girls! Not that there’s anything wrong with playing with dolls…

Cindy – (little late) Yes , Lupita teaches at Montessori. You should go watch a class.

I know how excited everybody is, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those people who have bought their tickets. As to Diets, its very easy, try to organize a Reunion for 150 people, but only 40 buy tickets. Between Anaceci and myself, we have lost pounds and sleep. Here is the Question should I sign the contract on monday at the Nikko for 40, 50 or how many people? Those people that want to help, please call on others to buy their tickets ASAP, meaning this week. I do no mean to sound pessimistic, but I dont want to keep on cancelling activities such as babysitters, buses and even Mariachis. Believe me when I tell you, this will be a once in a lifetime event and we will have a blast, no doubt about it.

Michael - We don't rough it too much when we camp (and yes, the chardonnay DOES help!). We have a Coleman pop-up camper. Andy wanted to tent camp, but I stuck to my slogan "Mamma don't camp." The thought of taking three little children and spending the weekend in a tent just wasn't doing it for me. So, our compromise was the pop-up. You crank the handle and the roof goes up, and the beds slide out. Ours sleeps 6, and has a little table, small fridge (for the chardonnay and chocolate!) and sink. That's about as rough as I go!

Anacecilia - Thanks for the update! Didn't Suzy Maitland McGourty pay? I thought Ingrid said she got her check.

Alex M: Great idea on the Peggy Watts dolls. I've called a supplier in Hong Kong and they'll be on sale at the door for $19.99. As to Mr. Beattie, I was singing in church yesterday (No Dominic sightings) and from the stares of the people in front of me, I'm questioning why after three wait-til-septembers I ended up in the choir. I just remember people dropping like flies during practices (sixth period in the hot, third/fourth floor music room).

Kelly S. I've been wanting to take Tessy camping but have been unsuccessful to date. You'll have to help me convince her to the joys of roughing it (does the Chardonnay have something to do with it?)

Cindy: My wife and daughter are over in CA these next two weeks. Cindy – Just don’t buy pesos at the airport or at the hotel and the difference between banks and casas de cambio usually isn’t much, unless you are going to exchange a couple thousand dollars.

About the peso thing, are there "casas de cambio" that give better deals? Are there any within the vicinity of the hotel? I know that you can exchange pesos at the hotel and airports but they generally give a higher rate. I need enough for tacos and tips (in that order).

The tryouts for the choir were at the end of the school year. You'd walk in Mr. Beatty's classroom alone and sing Happy Birthday in front of him. He'd get you on that third "happy birthday," if you didn't octave up correctly and simply tell you from his desk without looking up, "Wait until September" for a second chance. I should know, I was always part of the wait-until-September crowd.

Cary/Sammy: Montesorri Rocks! At least that is what Karina, my youngest would say. Three years ago, she went into a class with kids ages 3 - 6 where the older ones helped the young ones. Now she's amongst the oldest and feels tremendous about helping out the youngest. The owner of our Montessori school is totally into the school and Maria Montesorri's/Piaget's methods and it shows as Karina is already doing division in kindergarten and reading at 2nd grade level. Let each kid be a kid and learn at their own pace. It seems that schooling decisions for our kids are amongst the most stressful, believing that if your child is not a prodigy or in the top school she won't go to Harvard. Truth is, its more important to have a happy, well-adjusted child, than a stressed-out academically-souped up one. I recommend the book Emotional Intellegence. Does anyone remember being in Mr. Nelson's Psychology class and doing a paper about how one developed since childhood and predicting what one would be like in adulthood? I read mine a few years ago and was surprised to see that things worked out generally as I had hoped they would.

Tennyson – I didn’t know that story with Austin, Villalba, and Buenfil. It reminded me of many others I was actually involved with, with Trombka, my Brother, and some others. I still remember this one time in Austin, TX when the Sotos and I were raising hell and a black guys pulls over, starts arguing with one of the Sotos, I jumped in to help, and the guy pulls out a gun and says in a southern drawl, “I’m gonna shoot you honkey!” Man, I’m telling you, I never ran the 100 yard dash so fast before in my life, but what really cracks me up is that this guy was calling me a honkey, while at the same time everyone in the AHS knows I was el Negro, el caníbal, etc. Mike is right, we are all so lucky to have come out alive! Too bad to hear you will not make our reunion.

Well, as they say, I’m outta here! Tonight I leave for Holland, tomorrow I play golf there with my in-laws, and on Sunday it’s “Mexico lindo y que rico, here we come!!!” That’s right, in only two short days I will “start my engines” on the Tequila front! Sammy – Yes, there are many schools that say they are Montessori, but they aren’t. Many of the educational systems used today are based on systems and philosophies by Madam Montessori and Jean Piaget. Check it out, there are quite a few books and you should be able to “sit in” and observe a class.

Cindy – When Daniela was three, Lupita decided she wanted to be a “guide” (they are not called teachers), so she went back to school to learn the system. She is a co-guide at the moment and is very involved, goes to congresses and takes courses etc.

Tennyson – I know, I missed a good time! Everything worked out fine. When I looked for you again at Tecamacharlies, you had left. How’s Sean and Tyrone? I just can’t stop remembering the last time I saw you guy’s, Rick, Kevin, bola de locos! Man we did some stupid things! I wish you and your family well and hope to see you again someday. If you ever come my way please let me know.

Ingrid – I was born Canadian, I grew-up here since I was 6, became Mexican in 86’, married a Guadalupana, my daughters were born here and I still don’t get this staying at home till you get married! LOL. I have three friend’s that didn’t leave home till they got married and that didn’t happen till they were in their thirties! I guess it has its advantages. I don’t mind though.

I just got back and after a week without reading I had over 100 entries to catch up on. As usual its 3am and I'm still at my computer but I just feel so elated to hear comments and remember you all one by one. I was in Sydney for the first time since I was 6 weeks old( I was born there and my parents were transfered as soon as I was old enough to travel). This month is an amazing one for me, I will be in australia, singapore, the US and Mexico, all of my homes each for 1 week. It makes me realize how fortunate I have been to be born into this nomadic life which in its own way has been very rooted.

Sammy, I just wanted to tell you that I was born on September 10th and graduated from HighSchool at age 16. I agree that age is not the predominant factor to determine readiness for school. However my little boy Jon Oliver is born on the cut-off day and is clearly much younger than the others ,I am a bit concerned. I trust the system enough to know that if he is not ready some bells and whistles will go off. Let her start school and if at any point you feel she would benefit from repeating let her. I repeated my sophmore year at USC following which I excelled academically and in terms of self esteem.

I have one more week in Asia in case anyone needs anything from this part of the world. (No pokemon requests please!) By the way, Chiu Man may reconsider his arrival date in Mexico, he sees me get all starry eyed at the thought of my many many crushes, I think its got him on his toes.

Sammy, me and my sister were ahead of the class (my sister Sat Kaur was even two years ahead!). I do think it hurt me socially in school as I saw everyone in my class much bigger than me. At the reunion last year I was surprised to see everyone much smaller physically than what I had remembered, specially the girls. I don't think it affected my sister that much though because girls generally mature earlier than boys.

Sammy: Yo siempre fui una de la mas chicas porque naci el 30 de julio de 1963. Nunca senti ningun problema al respecto. Go for it! I think we sometimes underestimate our children. I've been amazed at how well they adapt and how they can learn so much at such a young age. She'll do great!!

Kelly S- I left just like you did, after sophomore year.

Yes William Buenfil passed away. He had married gorgeous Argentinian girl here in LA, then they moved to Mexico D.F., and she just hated being there, so she moved back to LA and said she would divorce him before she moved back. So she started the divorce going. William stayed in Mexico, and one day he hit below rock bottom, he took a tie, and hung himself in his bathroom. It was HORRIBLE. I can't remember if his mother found him, but it was very tragic. The argentinian girl was never to be heard of again. At least I have never seen her since.

Cary Rothman- Being Mexican I still have the old fashioned mentalityÉ..Get married, THEN move out. And if they don't get marriedÉ..well, just go with the flowÉ. SMILE.

Sammy: Hello! About your daughter Sarah, I'm not a mother myself, but I did teach first grade for five years and I have a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education. Every fall, I would have some kids in my class who were still 5 years old, while others were turning 7. I've learned from my experience that age isn't a concern, it's where a child is developmentally that matters. You said that Sarah is both emotionally and verbally mature, so it sounds like she'll be just fine starting Kindergarten. I'm sure that you'll make the right decision.

Wendy: Hi! You're not the only one...I've never been married and I haven't had children yet either. Also, I work for a dot.com company and have survived the first round of layoffs as well...so we'll see what the future brings! :)

Hello Cary. How are you doing? What ever happened last year. I remember seeing you at Tecamacharlies but nowhere else. And I read that you had paid for the rest? Everything work out OK?

Michael Buhler: The only terrorizing going on these days is by my kids to me. It's funny you mentioned the newspaper article about me terrorizing, though. The last part of my senior year seems to be more vague than the first but the stories of me being a terror are much more glamorized than factual (if you want to call that glamour).

The story of Mr. Buenfil is, unfortunately, true. John Villalba, who I have remained friends with all these years, filled me in on the account a few years back. He had stayed in touch with William as well. The story that Michael tells of the Asomex Basketball Tournament was a little off, however. William actually had the apartment downstairs with a courtyard that was overlooked by the guy upstairs. I remember being downstairs with William, John and Steve Austin and the guy upstairs (who William had been having problems with in the past) was giving him a hard time about the people he was keeping company with. It led to William going up to his apartment and calling the guy out. In the stairwell he beat the s**t out of the guy before his buddies decided to join in. It was basically a retreating fight as the crowd upstairs surged downstairs over us. John and I decided it had been enough and went across the street. It was at this time that someone pulled up, brandished a gun, fired it in the air a few times and then pointed it at Steve Austin who had remained behind. All I remember from then on is Steve rolling on the ground saying, no me mates, no me mates. What a night. I share your sentiment, Mike, on how it is surprising how we all survived our youth. OK, enough taking up your chat page.

Sammy: Montessori charter schools are becoming the "hot" thing in Colorado. If you are interested you can check their website..some say Montessori but they are not accredited. BTW my nephew, born in August, and my husband born Sept 16 (yes he is a "grito" baby) where both held back. I know that girls are a little more mature than boys..

Happy’s pizza reminds me of a time I was at someone’s party and a couple of us ended up got into a fight and someone sprayed tear gas and we all ended up “crying” over a couple of yards of beer and pizza.

A bunch of foggy memories:

- Jumping over the school wall by the pool for the first
  time and finding out it’s much higher on the other side!
- Loosing a bet on a game and getting your head shaved.
- Streakers.
- Senior prank day (pigs heads and guts hung from the
  bridge connecting HS & Elementary)
- Donut’s.
- Pizza Day.
- Hamburger Day.
- Forging your parent’s name to get a smoking permit.
- Missing your bus.
- French class.
- Office duty.
- Who dropped the Tear gas pellets in the room while
  signing up for your classes?
- Palomas in the toilette.
- Convincing the “poli” to let you in (you were down at “La
  Tiendita”, doing who knows what) and having to jump over
  the wall t get in.
- Convincing the “poli” to let you out without a “pink
  slip” (is that what it was called?) and having to jump
  the wall anyway.
- Taking a nap in the nursery. What was the assistant
  nurse’s name?
- Smoking in the Boy’s and /or Girl’s room.
- Having to ask for permission to go to the bathroom to
  intercept a “tardy” slip.
- Swimming in the winter and freezing your but off when you
  got out of the pool, ran to the showers and there was no
  hot water!
- The first party we organized in 7th and hired a rock band.
- Boy Scout’s, Lago de Guadalupe, sign in for “The Order of
  the Arrow”.
- Distilling fruit instead of wood in chemistry.
- Cutting open a poor frog in Biology.

Geor, que onda con Paty Olachea? Do you still see her? Does she know about Pepino? Where does she live? I REALLY would like to talk to her. (prometo estar con alguien para no golpearla).

Remember when we used to play golf in middle school recess?? We'd stick a branch or something in the football field and try to hit it with a golf ball. Can't remember how we hit the ball, but we'd use all the golf terminology, well at least you would. We'd play the game EVERY recess. Your comments on God were a very pleasant surprise. Believe me, it's a path worth considering.

Carol, liked your comments too. Never heard of Rich Mullins. Two 16 year old cats? Mine are one and two. I'm doomed.

Tennyson, I remember you from some PE class. With a hat and some hawaiian shirt maybe? You were a nice guy despite being an '80...

Sammy, I can't remember the ladies who sold us all that good stuff outside school. You know what they're selling to kids outside of schools here in DF these days? High octane stuff. What a shame. I was remembering the lady who sold tickets at the metal booth next to the H.S. snack bar. A girl with short hair, always in a bad mood but extremely efficient. You could tell when she wasn't there, the line would be abnormally long.

Carol and Cindy, congratulations for deciding to adopt. Elizabeth and I have always strongly admired couples who have done that.

Wendy O. Weren't you that soft-spoken red-headed girl who would hang out in the art room? So what if you're not married with children! It's great to be single too. It's not like you're missing out on life or anything. But working in the dot com world, now that's something to be ashamed of! :)

Can't remember Ms. Diamond. Took me a looong time to remember my second grade teacher but the old hard drive finally turned. Ms. Basañez.

Elena and Georgina, I heard the exact same story about William Buenfil. But Simon Hamui, who was also close to William, said it was far more complicated than that. But then I can't remember what the true story was!

Does anybody know who ripped off Mr. Blanco's Hasselblad? Remember they closed the school doors and searched every single locker and bag and never found the camera? Who was it?

Wendy: Welcome aboard. Seeing your message brought back some bizzare memories of us in 9th grade and Mr. Blanco's IPS class. I still remember how we used to give Blanco such a hard time. Remember Kelly Lambert and John Green?

About William: Patty Olachea was a close friend of his. Patty told me the same story you have all written about. I last saw him around 1987 at a school event. He had a beautiful wife who he adored. She left him and filed for divorce a few years later. That devastated him and he commited suicide. Another AHS student that commited suicide was Ana Laura Robles' brother (Vladimir class of '82 or '83?). He had been going to college in the United States. He had come back home for Christmas and hung himself the day before heading back. I was very saddend by both deaths and felt particularly bad for their families.

I'll take you up on that pina colada Michael! No umbrella necessary. I haven't had one of those in YEARS!!! (I meant the drink, not the umbrella). I do recall going to that disco in Mexico City and getting a "yarda" of pina colada. Think that quenched my craving for awhile!

Hi Sammy - My daughters have attended a Montessori school since they turned 2. The classes have children of different ages. Bebes 2-4 year olds, Casa de niños 5-6 year olds, Taller 1 has 1st-3erd gradeers and Taller 2 has 4th-6th graders the older kid's help the yonger ones, they all get along well.

This chat room is picking up so much speed I'm spinning here. Sammy, I was born on Sept 6, usually first day of classes. Unfortunately, I flunked kindergarten, so I ended up being amongst the oldest rather than the youngest. Obviously, that didn't help at all. I'm sure your daughter will be just fine, particularly if she's as sharp, inquisitive and articulate as you.

Tennyson, good to hear from you. Congrats on the drink. I remember the newspaper article about how your Pandilla was terrorizing the Pizza place somewhere near Palmas. Ay que miedo! In any case, those were some fun friday nights out there. Who are you terrorizing now a days?

Kelly, sorry you missed the drink. I'll buy you a consolation drink and we'll make sure it has a nice little pink umbrella on it so you don't feel bad. We'll even make it one of those killer piña coladas we used to have in Acapulco.

Elena, that is horrible news about William. Strange too. He was one hell of a stud in my book, good looking, smart, confident. Makes you wonder what though processes go on in people's heads. Nevertheless, he almost got us killed at the Asomex basketball tournament in Monterrey when he decided to take on a whole gang of people who lived under his apartment. Apparently somewhere there called in for reenforcements and some crazed regio came out firing his gun. Fortunately, back then the gunman only came out shooting in the air, while today he may have come out shooting a bit lower. After the shock passed (we were pretty drunk, so it went by pretty fast) we thought it was pretty hilarious. In Holland they say that children and drunks have a special angel. I'd add to it that our high school generation had its own angel considering how much drunk driving, reckless speeding, fighting, went on. We're lucky to be alive.

Alex M., I read with interest about your religious conversion. I'm very happy for you that you've been able to find a source of peace and purpose. It's taken me a bit longer but as life has given me both highs and lows, I've come to believe in God myself. In fact, I am now looking at some of my lows and realizing they were blessings in disguise - what doesn't kill you actually makes you stronger, I'd say.

Cindy, Congratulations on the one year celebration. Happy Mother's Day to all AHS mom's. Sarah is 4.5 and will be starting Kindergarten this Fall. Her bday is Oct. 30 so we had to decide whether to hold her for one more year or have her start. She will now be one of the youngest in her class for the rest of her school years. Strange how as parents we make decisions that affect our children in what may seem insignificant but which may in turn become important. There will be 6 year old kids in her class. She's smart enough to start, emotionally and verbally very mature but a bit small in size and not as agile as other girls... so I wonder how it will affect her to be younger. Any thoughts on this subject? I would sure like to hear from people whose bday is in the late Fall. Did you start early, how was it?
Re: my favorite elementary school teacher Ms. Diamond, I do remember the vegetable garden which was along the same wall of the schoolyard as the sandboxes. Thanks for reminding me of that.

Hi Folks! It's been fun reading the posts from all you guys. So many old familiar names and memories! I'm not sure you'll remember me; I was in the class of '81 but I left after 11th grade. I live in the Washington DC area now, work in marketing in the (gulp!) dot.com world. (I've survived the first round of layoffs...we'll see what the future holds). Not married and no kids yet...I must be the only one on this list without 'em, but there it is.

I went back to AHS a year or so ago when I was in the DF on business...couldn't believe how it had changed. The school looked fantastic, but sadly, Tia and the tiendita (my fave spot when skipping) weren't there.

I can't make it to the reunion but it sounds like you all will have a blast - let the tequila flow!

I know it was over 100 messages ago that I was reminded of los tubos and I just had to add a fond memory for the ladies who sold us all that great crap outside of the school...chicharron, raspados, dulces, motitas de platano, and of course lanyard. I will have a drink on them. I will also toast "El Poli" who often looked the other way.

Alex McGrath: I enjoyed reading your story. It is amazing how one has to hit spiritual "bottom" in life to realize one's need for Jesus. That is very similar to what happened to me, except it was more lengthy process that began my freshman year at SMU (where I hit rock bottom), struggling through the next few years, and finally ended up with accepting Jesus Christ as my LORD and Savior in 1987. Through all those years, I can see the hand of God. One really does become a new creation and has a totally different outlook on life.

Has anyone ever heard of Rich Mullins?? He was a Christian singer who died in a car accident a few years ago. I love the lyrics of his songs. One in particular: "If we could reach beyond the "wisdom" of this age, into the "foolishness" of God, that "foolishness" will save.

On a lighter note, happy 16th birthday to my cats Gonzo and Miss Piggy. (That's a lot of human years!). Other than an overactive thyroid for Miss Piggy and failing kidneys requiring sub-cutaneous fluids for Gonzo, they are doing great!!! (Yes, I learned to stick the big long needle in his back and still hate to do it, but it helps him a lot).

Anacecilia - Don't forget to take your CPR class. When David and I adopted Joseph, the adoption agency required a parenting class and a CPR class. They both came in really handy. Joseph has had 3 febrile seizures, and he stopped breathing on the last one. Although I was too histerical to remember exactly how to do the CPR, I stumbled through it. You never know when you will need it. That reminds me, I have to review my CPR notes on that again with David.

We received a mail from Suzanne McGourty. I can't recall the last name. Is it Suzy Maitland by any chance? Well, tell us about yourself!

Alright...in the name of good sportsmanship, I'll provide the umbrella in your drink....now you have to make an appearance at our reunion, though! How is life in Beantown? Have a lobster for me!

        I called the high school office and asked if they know of girls who are willing to babysit. Unfortunately, I was informed that the school doesn't have a list as they can't endorse anyone doing this job. What was
suggested is that you write to the hotel or call (or maybe Anaceci or one of the other organizers can call) and ask if they have a babysitting service. I think many of the big hotels do count with this service.
        If I should hear of someone who babysits, I'll let you know.

I'll try to see whether Ronnie can set up a few foursomes. Be aware however that a) we will play early (8:00AM), and b) play for money (Ronnie has been the club champ at La Hacienda a few times since graduation. A few years ago he was going into the par-5 18th hole on the final day of the tournament even for the lead, when he shanked his drive, second shot and third shot into the woods on the right side. While Ronnie was staring at his fourth shot deep in the woods and with seemingly no angle onto the green, his rival hit his third shot onto the bottom rung of the green (flag was on the backside top part of the green) with a clear shot at a par. Never one to back away, Ronnie closed his eyes and swung his pitching wedge as hard as he could, hoping to get the ball up over the trees. Lo and behold, his shot flew out and landed with such force on the brim of the cup that it ripped through the grass and into the hole for a birdie. While the spectators were staring at each other wishing for a replay, his shaken opponent missed the tying put and Ronnie ended up champ once again. Oddly enough, talk about that special bond between twins, I had earlier in the day faxed Ronnie a good luck letter with a drawing of an oversized hole, roughly the size of the normal hole plus the space his ball carved out as it landed. Truly twilight zone!

Georgina, I fez up, I also had a crush on you in sixth grade. I think we even went out for a week (weekends not included),, but you know, that fear of commitment and long term relationships kicked in pretty early.

About 100 messages ago, someone mentioned that William Buenfield had passed away. I didn't know that. When did it happen? Is that the only class member we've lost? How many were actually in our graduating class, does anyone know?

Alex M – Yes Miss. Bryan! I remember something about her “mood’s” and the conclusion was that it had something to do with a “lunar cycle”. I liked her class.
“Emptiness” is something we have all faced at different times in our life and maybe still do once in a while. I have always felt that “tomorrow” IS “another day” and that the sun will always shine if you look for it…


Mike – Alex said it, “Las Estacas. Daughters…I think they are great y además yo soy “el rey del hogar”! What I really enjoy is seeing how close they are, being of the same sex they have allot in common. I think the real fun start’s when I have all these “pretendientes” hanging around the house, lol! How old are yours? “Outsider”, for some reason I felt this way when I found all of you, I guess I was the one who went “outside”, now I’m trying to get back in, lol!

Anacecilia - We visited Lori, Luis and their daughter Emma (4) and had a great time! She’s not sure if she will be able to make it.

Ear piercing… I sat there one night and watched Joanna Macias using the “ice and needle” technique + tequila to pierce Cindy Schaeffer’s ear, it was kind of like a scene from one of Peter’s Sellers Pink Panther movies, where he’s a doctor trying to pull the commissioners tooth using laughing gas. They then tried it on me!

For the last couple of years I have been reading about the social and technological development of different societies since the last ice age. The book that started this was “Guns, Germs & Steel”, has anybody read it?

Becky Nelson, a SS teacher in middle school? Wasn't there a Mr…, well Nelson! Maybe Perazzini or was that in high school?

Loya, qué bueno oir de ti! About me saying something about no women in heaven… I don't have the slightest idea. Maybe I was putting you on or something, or was referring to marriage, who knows. Must have seen you pretty bad to say something like that!

And yes I remember that Bible you mention. You know, I had a happy childhood, with a very stable home, excellent parents who got along well, a very good relationship with my brothers and sister. We made a lot of nice trips, and I attended the, pause to stand up, American School. What more can you ask for as a kid?

But inside a very different story developed during those years. Fairly young I began to notice a sense of emptiness in me. My life was, like, what for? No meaning, no purpose. As we were all growing older, that deep, lonely feeling really began to grow inside. I began questioning everything, starting with whatever composed the social structure around me. Study, grow up, work, have a family, end up who knows where as an old man, die. Lots of questions, no answers.

The worst time of the week for me was Sunday evening. Don't take this personal but the prospect of facing you guys… knowing there was a full week of school ahead. I mean once you're there you have happy moments, satisfactions, whatever. But at a deeper level there was always a sense of unsatisfaction, of emptiness, of loneliness.

Then in 10th grade life really became miserable, to the point where I turned to God for help. I had attended you know, Sunday School, Bible studies, but had obtained nothing much there, either. But this time I didn't ask for help from anybody, I went straight to the top.

By myself, I asked God to give me the opportunity of surrendering my life to him. I asked him to forgive me for everything I had done, to take my life, to come inside me, to change me, to save me. I had always known Jesus had died in my place, but this time I was cashing in the ticket. I wasn't giving up anything too valuable, basically a very empty life.

A few days later I began to notice that emptiness which had been part of me since I could remember, had faded away. Outside I was the same person with the goofy haircut and so on. But inside I began to enjoy an entirely different life. Everything began to have a meaning and a purpose. That lonely person I had always was becoming part of my past, I stopped doing things I knew were wrong, I was changing in every area. But it wasn't me trying to be a better person, I had tried that before, it was everything changing without me even trying. Someone was changing my life.

It's been some 22 years in which God has continued to guide me every day, in every circumstance, in every decision. As a student, then those years living in Madrid by myself, now married to a wonderful girl. And with an eternity by His side waiting. Very different from those Sunday evenings.

Kelly: I definitely had more crushes but they weren't really secret since I did end up going out with them at some time or the other. Mike Buhler was definitely one of them as was Ed Valentine (class of '80)! Oh, and someone mentioned Dan Trevino. Definitely had a crush on him during elementary school! Hey, I too have gone through my year book (high school) and remembered that one of my biggest crushes - John Pike - not only left me "un beso" he also left me a wedding ring! Ok, now I am totally melting! Tachycardia all over again!!!

Ingrid - I left after sophomore year too...I just assumed you were still there. I have a yearbook from middle school (7th grade) and there's a very cute picture of you with longer hair. I'm chuckling as I read what everyone wrote..deep things like "2 cool 2 B forgotten" and "you're really nice. You'll go far in life." It's very neat that we're all still in touch!

I was only in on 1 year of HS, so my memories there are scant. Although I do remember skipping math class with Elena and feeling so bad about it.

I remember when you told me about the Battle of Armageddon and showed me a map in your Bible of where it will occur, I said "Well, thats over in the Middle East, we don't have to worry about it!" and then I remember one time I told you, basically, I was head over heels over this one girl and you told me there would be no women in heaven, to this day I don't know if by saying there would be no women in heaven you were refering to the 30 minutes of silence mentioned in Revelation or if you meant to tell me there will be no marriage in heaven, whatever you meant, I remember thinking "How can it be heaven without women?" Well, I know I willed you "una sotana" in our year book, it appears as though I'm the one who ended up wearing it!

Thanks to everybody for congratulating me on the birth of my itty bitty baby girl Karaleigh! She is a full month old now and is doing great! And lil' Alex is always kissing on her and saying "baba, baba!" I do believe I will go to the reunion, I was not sure because Sandra, my beautiful wife, had such a hard pregnancy, but she appears to be recovering just fine. I got a question for those of you taking children who have no family in Mexico City, will you just miss the adults only activities or will there be child care provided? I'm saying this because I want to bring lil' Al with me, he is only a year and a half old, but, although some of you may be surprised to know, I have no family in Mexico City at all. My immediate family, mom, dad brother and sisters, and myself lived there for, what? a long time! But by opur selves, with no family around, after I graduated from high school and moved to the States, they all moved around like nomads for a few years and now they ended up in Queretaro, thinking about moving to Covington. Point is, I have no one to leave my son with if I wanted to hang for a little while with adults only, so what are the provisions for those of us with children but no family in Mexico City? Are we just going to hang out at the hotel? Can anybody answer this question for me please?

Ingrid, congratulations on your baby girl! I have been consciously and specificly praying for you and your baby's health! I'm happy to hear the Lord is granting the request! You asked what my daughter's name means, Karaleigh means "pure" (Eva means "mother of all the living" and Loya,originally spelled Loia, means, well, I'm not sure I want to share what it means! Its an ancient name... ok, we're all adults now! I'm sure you won't tease me! Loya means "dirty" in the Tuscan dialect, apparently the ancient Loyas/Loias were miners and got dirty at their job) Just so long as you all don't tease my baby girl! Or my baby boy! Them be fightin' words!

I'm sad to hear about Pepino's condition, I actually saw the accident happen from a few hundred yards away. I was living in Austin, Texas, working at a GW Jr. Hamburger joint flipping burgers, right before I joined the Marine Corps, when one night night I saw the ambulances fly by infront of the hamburger place. We all looked out the window and saw the ambulances stop a few hundred yards away, maybe 300 yards, and saw them pick somebody up. We heard someone had been hit by a car, later I found out it had been Pepino. Bummer! It has been a long time! The bible does not mention teaching someone to fish instead of giving them a fish, although that is a good principle that can be drawn from the Word of God, but it does say to love in deed rather than in word only, if we say we care and give him not the things he needs, what good is it? If he is cold and hungry and we tell him "I hope the best for you, be warmed and filled and get a good job" but we don't give him the food and clothing he needs, and the job he needs, what good is it? I say lets follow through and give him that computer you guys mentioned and that job from home on the computer so he can earn some money. I don't know how he could move here to the U.S. permanently, he is not a dual national, but maybe some of you know how. Yeah, but we should help him indeed!

With all these good emotions among our class mates I don't understand why you all didn't take my idea and run, about a 20 year photo year book, let me insist that one of you leaders such as Dale or Ananceci (how scary about your little girl! Gracias a Dios indeed!) or Ramon, or Sue (you can invite the class of 80 to join in), someone not as threatening as I appear to be percieved, some one not as weird (looking), take this idea and do it, I'm certain 100% that all of you would be happy to have such a memory year book!

In other news, let me show off a little bit again, memberdat poem I posted on poetry,com that was selected for publication, "The Feeling"? Well, guess what, it was among 33 poems selected to be recorded in an audio anthology of poetry, read by profesional readers with background music an all! Unbelievable! Apparently I'm going down in the history of literature! That explains Mike's reference to Miami on his Senior Page. Mike went to the University of Miami after graduating from the AHS. He worked in New York City for a number of years after college and now he lives in New Jersey. By the way, I agree with you that Kelly wins the class correspondence title handsdown!

Talking about memories of professors, does anyone remember Lapadat? Now those tests were a joke! A ese señor lo que más le impresionaba era la cantidad de hojas que le entregábamos. Me recuerda al chiste de Pepito que estaba precisamente con un profesor como Lapadat y al final del examen de insectos en la clase de biología ya nada más quedaba él por entregar, por lo que el profesor le preguntaba que si le faltaba mucho y Pepito respondía que ya casi, pero seguía escribe y escribe, hasta que 4.5 horas más tarde finalmente entregó su examen que consistía en 183 hojas. El profesor muy intrigado empezó a corregir su examen de inmediato, ya que Pepito nunca antes había entregado más de un cuarto de página. Kelly, fair is fair... Let me come clean on the crush front: I had the biggest cursh on Hellen P. from kinder-garden through elementary, but was too embarrassed about it and never did anything about it. I think in middle-school it was Donna (didn’t we ALL have a crush on her?!), and in high-school there was a whole list: Marisa G., Beth A., Jennifer M., Cynthia S., Joanne B., Linda C., Jeannie H., Sue B., etc... I think Mike is right, list all the class of ’81 (also part of ’82) take out all the guys, and there you have it!

Sue M., Hi there! You are right, it was Mr. Chase. As to Acapulco, I remember that night in the pool. If I recall correctly (not much of a chance of that after the many pitchers of Piña coladas) it was raining cats and dogs. In any case, I think we did a good job taking care of our "chaperones", keeping them out of trouble. My most vivid memory of Coach Honsey however was the time he showed up at a Basketball team end-of-year wrap-up dinner and David McDonald ended up smashing a cake into his face. Coach Honsey chased him all through the house. We all thought it was hilarious until we saw that Coach had not taken it that well. Do you know what happened with Susana Sanchez??

I've been blessed with two girls (Ingrid are you paying attention?). They are a real joy and certainly alot less maintenance than two boys. It's interesting you saw yourself as an outsider. I remember you being extremely confident and well liked.

Alex M., I remember that in one of our outings to Oaxtepec some of the pools actually had all the water drained out from them and no signs indicating such. Do you recall who almost jumped in? Also, if Oaxtepec had the 10 meter diving boards, what was that place also rumbo cuernavaca that was a spring-fed river where you could pretend to be Tarzan and jump into the water from the trees?

Kelly S. I'd love to participate in the crush theme. It would be pretty simple, however. As you well know, all we'd have to do is start with Anacecilia's list below, strike all the guys, add the rest of the girls of '81, and that would pretty much be it!

Back in high school I pierced alot of people's ears, I remember piercing a third set of holes into Susie Bryant's ears, did the second set for Candy Michael...remember her. I am sure my piercing techniques were state of the art, ice and a needle with thread (no knot) I'm sure OSHA would have certified my sterile techniques!

Another thing about Mr. Barkow. In the Oaxtepec trip (remember that?) everybody would gather around the main pool and watch him jump off the 10 meter platform. He did that every year until the doc told him to stop because of his heart condition. Didn't he finally die of a heart attack?

Cary, are you talking about Sue Bryan, the Social Studies teacher? She was grrreat. Sometimes she would be a little hysterical. At first my friend Rios and I couldn't understand why the sudden change in mood, but after a while we began noticing certain patterns. Biology class gave us the answer and pretty soon we had a calendar drawn in the back of our SS notebooks. We knew exactly what time of the month trouble was coming and knew we would be better off keeping a low profile during those days LOL.

Tirso, Ingrid's husband, brought me some cash today from the tickets Ingrid collected, after seeing him, I met with Ramon and to our surprise, we got an exchange rate of 9.25 , not even close to 10 as we had predicted. After adding it up, it does make a diffrence, so SORRY folks!

I hope you all realize that each table at the dinner is worth $10,500 pesos ($1135 usd). The taquiza $4500 There is no profit being made, but neither Ramon or I can afford any mistakes. That is why we are insisting that you all pay for your tickets as soon as possible and why no tickets will be sold at the door.

Do you remember the rather drunken evening where we all ended up in the pool with our clothes on, singing at the top of our lungs to the music of "Hair?" That was before Donna and Kelly arrived the next day with our Chaperones, Coach Honsey and Coach Rick. They were not terribly effective chaperones, if I remember correctly. At least not from our parents' perspectives, I'm sure, but we sure had fun with them. I still have the pictures to prove it! As for the math teacher, are you talking about Mr. Chase?

Becky: Mr. Barkow!!! He taught us algebra in the 8th grade (how times change, my daughter will be taking it in the sixth grade!!). He used to commute from Cuernavaca every morning and had a sense of humor to boot. Quite the opposite of our 9/10th grade Math teacher (a balding, blond person) who ended up throwing a chalk at someone for talking during his lectures (either the church-going Dominic or Pepino). I think Cristy Cueto ended up at the receiving end of that raging missile.

Alex M. I think I know where one of those bullets landed.. A a few years ago, as I started to lose my hair (notice I am not using that as an excuse to stay away), I decided I wanted a buzz cut (Soldado Raso!). After the deed was done I noticed I had a especially bald spot about .5" across on the side of my head. Your memory suddenly explains everything!!!

Cary: Congrats Mr. 1000! I had to go back to our Freshman year Anahuac to match your picture to your name, but I recognized it in an instant. Without the luxury of checking posting 950 and below, where have you been since then??

Hello everyone! It's been a while (since 78 for me). I'm glad Elena tracked me. This chat is *amazing*. Obviously a strong sense of community prevails---20 or more years later.

It's been a rush reading all these memories. Elena's link landed me sometime in late April, just as the talk about first crushes was heating up and anticipation of the 1000th message reached fever-pitch. Like Thurston, I thought I might hyperventilate at any moment.

Jennifer M., you're right! I didn't go to Miami of Ohio; it was Sewanee, where David Laird was a classmate.

Kudos to Maria W for making the trip from Singapore to DF for the reunion. She deserves some special award. Not to mention her eloquent remembrances... Maria, I vividly recall turning cartwheels in your backyard. I also have this image of Ingrid chatting it up on the afternoon bus (# unremembered...yipes), so your exuberance has stayed with you! (Congratulations on your eagerly anticipated little one!) And then there's Kelly S., making everybody laugh.

I was trying to remember our super 8th-grade math teacher, an older man (well, from the perspective of a 12-year-old anyway...it's all relative), I think it was an algebra class(?!). And yes, Mr. Petersen's core class...we read A Light in the Forest. Who was that creative writing teacher in 7th or 8th; we had to keep journals for her class.

And just seeing all these names, what a kick! The reunion is sure to be a blast; sorry I'll miss it. saludos, todos!

Elena, Jim Bernazzani ran into Ralph Martinez at a bar when they were both working the summer olympic games in Atlanta. Jim is with the FBI and Ralph with the ATF. Jim was living in Houston for awhile but moved away a few years ago. I believe Ralph was living in the DC area at the time.

I really owe him a big thank you for showing me the difference between religion and having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and the difference it makes in daily living (and eternal living, of course!!!)

I have also been thinking about so many events while at the AHS. I was also an old timer - 14 years at the American School. Remember Mr. Beaty, Mrs. Best, Ms. Van Dusen, Mrs. Marshall and Mrs. Roamer (3rd grade?), Mrs. Riveron, Mrs. Paul, Mrs. Monteverde, Mr. Nelson,Mrs. Campbell, Mrs. Crump......

Disco’s are still Disco’s (down here at least), but the music is Tranz and Techno, some are more like stand-up dance bar’s with no “dance floor” and actually it’s easier to get in at this age than as a teenager.

Its great to see how things are warming up, I mean warm because your organizing comitee is worried about the still low number of people who have paid. If you say you are coming, great welcome, but please also buy your tickets. Also a reminder we have the great Rate at the Nikko Hotel but we do not have enough people for the group rate I would recomend to people from the city, if they want to stay on Friday night at the Hotel instead of Driving. Last years Reunion '80 people were leaving at 5 a.m., we can last longer!

Someone asked about Marlene Guinchard. I met her brother, Jean-Louis, a few weeks ago for lunch here in Miami and he said she had gotten married to someone who had a very successful ad-agency and that they moved to Cabo San Lucas to get away from the DF. They're now developing real estate. Anyway, since I blew her cover, hope she wasn't in the Mexican witness protection program!

Cary, I do not remember if I ever got in a fight with you, but I know that at times I wanted to, on account of being jealous of you... I think among the guys you were also perceived as a cool dude.

Mike, as much as I tried to persuade Nathalie to agree on taking Oliver she stood her ground. She says she needs a break (it’s true!), and since we are going back to Mexico in December she figures we will take him then. BTW, we will arrive to the DF about 2 weeks before the reunion. I think it was our sophomore years that you girls stayed at Las Brisas and we would come over to visit or go to the discos? Being in our late 30's, I wonder if it would be as difficult for us to get into a disco now (do they still call them that?!?) as it was when we were 16? At least we had Lissy Obermann and her dad's connections to see us in. I ran into Gerardo Llanes at the immigration line at the Miami airport (he works out of Puerto Rico... with Fawn Hutton perhaps?) last month. We reminisced about we usually ended up at the disco on the beach or the lobby bar at the Fiesta Americana (the only place we could get in) after being rejected at Magic's, UBQ, etc..

Has anyone heard of Albert Solis, or Nick Sirrocco (he would definitely be able to assist us in the music department)?

Que onda!?!? Kelly, you were right, I do have alot of reading to do.
Anyway, after being on the fence for quite some time about going, I was driving home a few weeks ago and heard back-to-back renditions of Freebird, Sweet Home Alabama and Stairway to Heaven. Well, I knew right then and there that someone was trying to send me a message and that message was get your butt in gear, cash in those miles, pay Ingrid and book the trip! Reading everyone's postings are getting me even more psyched. I will be going with my wife, Tessy (11 years married), and my daughters Andrea (10) and Karina (6) and expect my brother Ronald to be there with his wife, Edith and his two sons Nicolas (now in the AHS class of 2013!!) and Sebastian (3.5 yrs). Is anyone taking there kids to the taquiza on Saturday?

I looked in the local phone book, Austin's, and I found the following # for Lourdes Ruiz-Arthur (512)329-5918, believe it or not, she was my daughter's pre-kinder teacher in 1994, I still see her periodically. Also ran into Dominic C. after church 2 weeks ago, he states he is going to the reunion.

Also, nobody accepted my offer to scan the 1981 Anahuac. There is still time to scan it and upload it to the ASF 1978-1982 site before the reunion. If you are willing to lend me your Anahuac for a couple of weeks please contact me.

I live in California, married to a veterinarian (John Black) and have two children, Rebecca (almost 4 yrs) and Chase (20 months). Now you were a fun guy! I have wondered about David Chaloupek. He was great. I still have a picture we took in 1982-1983 in Miami! I'll look for it and post it on the AHS web site.

Ingrid - I can't say it enough - epidural, epidural, epidural! I've had 3, and you honestly feel nothing - it was a little weird to push when it was time, but I could still do it and got to enjoy the whole experience, MINUS any pain.

On a personal note, we just came from the Dr. Our little pirncess is doing great. Still moving A LOT. We could barley listen to her heart beat from how much she was moving. Everything is fine, and she is very healthy. We are so happy. I still have not felt her yet, but I'm told that soon, very soon. I look like I'm 8 months, when I'm only 4 1/2. I'm looking at wittle dresses for her. It's so much fun!

Mommies- What is your opinion on the Epidural????

Does anyone know how to reach Jack Richmond? Last I heard he was living in Mexico City. I think his sisters still live there too. Remember him?
I played hookie with him in 5th grade and we spent the day climbing into the parked school buses and hiding in the gym. Eventually a janitor caught us and took us to see Mrs. Anzaldua. She was SO sweet to us. Like a grandma. Jack and I were best friends until we both moved away for a few years. After I left, I remember missing Pilar Colon a lot (whom I had a big crush on back then and remember being jealous of David Rae her boyfriend). Marisa Garcia and Nina Padilla and Jack and I were inseparable back then. I regret not doing middle school at the American School. It was very strange returning in 10th grade to see my childhood friends all developed, and in separate groups around the school...some popis...some popis wannabes...some smoking loungers...and lots of us wanderers in and out of several groups trying to figure out where to fit in. THANK GOD for the American School. It was the best place in the world for me.

Remembering dia de los ninos was fun. We saw its a mad mad world one year and Dr. Doolitle the next. I remember it was a HUGE theatre. Another year didn't they take us to see the HERBIE movie about a VW bug in a car race?

Cindy I'd like to propose that the 25 year reunion happen in the fall. It seems like a lot of babies are born in the Spring or early summer time. What's happening 40 weeks earlier?

I just found out yesterday that Felipe Landa and his wife Wendy are expecting their first child in early June so they will also have to miss out on the fun. Maybe at the 25 year USA reunion????

Anacecilia, do you know if the current AHS Alumni directory is available online? Even though time is running out, I'd be happy to contact other people from our class whom we haven't heard from. I don't own the current directory. (The last one I had was from 1993 and it wasn't well organized back then.)

Sorry, I just read the recent entries by Anaceci and Cary.

My husband's name is Wong Chiu Man or ChiuMan Wong but he won't be arriving in the DF until after the reunion. Probably on Sunday or Monday. I hope to get a chance to introduce him to some friends. We are celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary soon, I tell my friends that we are very blessed to have endured through thick and thicker.

Cary, I always thought you were very sweet and independent but shy. Probably still are.

Hi everyone, the mention of the tubos just opened a whole cobwebbed file in my memory and wow! I'm just sitting here smiling and remembering what a sweeeeeeeeeeet childhood we had.

Although most of what I remember about the Colegio Americano occurred during recess, I have a few memories of teachers and inspiring classes. One of my favorite was Profesor Esqueda who introduced us to Science in the third grade. This was an amazing gift which I often recall.

In professor Vargas' 4th grade class, I remember Gerome Boone who always got to come to school without combing his hair.I also remember Phillip Datsun who was and still is my idea of the perfect gentleman. You can see how many I've met since.

Cindy P. you mentioned Visa Kent, she taught me something very useful... where to stop buttoning my blouse. And actually also taught me how interesting Spanish Literature is, of course the first thing she taught me has been a more enduring lesson.

Do you remember Mr. Peterson in 7th grade. We did a school play about gossip and the telephone which is actually very relevant at this moment, he was a visionary about the future of telecommunications.

Now that I look back, I think of how our middle school years were years of exponential hormonal transformation, how we or anyone in middle school actually learns anything is beyond me.

Donna K. I wonder if I ever thanked you for the Puma tennis shoes your Dad got for me in 7th grade. Please send my love to your parents. Of course my least forgettable experience with them was soaking in the tub as your Mom looked over my injuries after the Nevado de Toluca accident.

Sammy, I'm so happy to hear that you are coming for the reunion I really look forward to seeing you and meeting your family. I think you and I and Anaceci and a few others were together from Kinder right to 12th grade.

Kelly S. You silly girl, just the thought of you makes me smile, remember your beach boys slumber party?

The other day in a conversation with my Sister Nancy '74 she told me that the reason attending a reunion like this is so important is that it enables us to connect to who we are at a very fundamental level. My memories of elementary school are so powerful as a reminder of who I was to begin with.

I was looking at some of the photos of the '81 reunion last year and realized that for many of us, we haven't gone too far from that little smiling bubbly kiddie. And yet, I have children that age myself, after this, I will never underestimate the effect people and relationships will have on them.

I'm sorry, this is meant to be a chat line, not a stream of consciousness monolog.

Sammy, me acuerdo de esa foto! I don't know if I have it any more. I think it was somebody's birthday and we were taken to a park to play soccer. And some thoughtful mother gave each of us a copy of the picture. I can still smell the mud and wet grass from those soccer days.

Anybody remember José Luis Barros? A really nice guy. Very hard-working. It seemed his family, like so many others, was making a big sacrifice sending him to that school. He left in... 6th grade?

Hello class of '81

While I did graduate in '81, I left the AHS after sophmore year and returned to Northern Virginia. With all the preperation going into my Virginia class reunion, I coudn't help but think back to the good friends and good times I left at the American school. My sister told me about this chat site and reading the posts has been triggering alot of memories I once thought lost to the excesses of college life. I wish I could make it to the reunion and catch up with everybody. I don't know where the time has gone. Have a great time at the reunion and, now that I know about this discussion list, I'll keep popping in to see wassupp.

Just over a month since I last checked in, and nearly 200 messages!. This is fabulous for keeping in touch. We just went to Houston in Semana Santa to do househunting. We are in the process of having the structural engineer go visit the property we are bidding on, to determine if it is "up to code". Maybe soon we will be posting our next address, for July of this year! Our Oliver completes Primaria on the 6 of July, so we leave after that. Andre, our teenager, will be done with classes on May 25, so we have him back home soon. Our prospective buyer for the appartment in Mexico backed out. He is presently remodeling his office, and went beyond his budget. Still for sale, 182 m. appartment with 80 m. den upstairs as "sunroom". Assorted appliances, furniture and extras. (Anyone need a nice Mothers' Day gift???) great prices! Tel. 5286-1707.

Wow! We are getting so "chatty", as the date creeps up on us! How great it will be to see everyone in person again!

Sammy - Donna Keeler is going to the reunion. A few of us are going to her parent's place in Acapulco before, so I KNOW she'll be there - we're all planning on arriving on Friday.

Ingrid - Congrats on the baby girl! I am very close to my Mom, so hope to have the same relationship with my girls, as they get older (now, if I can just get my 9 year old to stop rolling her eyes at me). I liked finding out what I was going to have, because for me, it made it all seem real, once I knew who the "person" was inside of me. "It" was no longer an "it", it was a "she", with a name. Very exciting!

Cary - I'm there with Cindy - you were the coolest of the cool. You were also VERY skinny - I imagine you're still cool, but have you put on any weight? Actually, now that we're all 20 years older, maybe we should just stick to the former crushes, and not get into the weight department! Things shift, don't they?

Alright - my former crushes. I'm going way back now, starting with 6th grade. Steve Austin made my heart skip a beat, but alas, he asked Jennifer Meaney out (I recall putting toothpaste in her hair at a slumber party shortly thereafter!). Not to worry, she was a roommate of mine after college, and a bridesmaid at my wedding! STILL - I had a BIG thing for Steve. Then, it was on to 8th grade, where Thurston Hamer was the cutest of the cute - sorry Anacecilia! He gave me the Hotel California album by the Eagles, and I thought it was love...until he came back from the summer and wasn't interested anymore. Ah well...I also recall having a crush on Craig Dudley (I think he was dating Marcie at the time!).

High School - I dated David Baird and Cory Juhl, but also had a thing for Gerardo Llanes ('82). Think that was it! I can feel my face turning pink as I type! There! I've done my share of fessing up!

Reading all of you this morning I realized that this is not only a High School reunion but going back in time, with deeper memories into elementary... I had a great, wonderful childhood! I, (we) owe it to our parents and family, but we all shared in it together. This is a celebration of our lives!

Ingrid:FELICIDADES!! Great Maternity clothes are found at Liz Lange in Beverly Hills (also has a website), Pea in the Pod and Maternite, and japaneseweekend.com. All of these are a little pricey of course, but tons of cute stuff. Make sure you go to babycenter.com for baby and pregnancy info--they have a great section with weekly updates on where you are in your pregnancy. Check out their on line store--even if you don't buy anything. There is a section where parents rate the products (very usefull when you shop for strollers, car seats, etc)..Sobre todo, enjoy this time, soon you will start to feel her move!!

Geor: I have had trouble with FedEX with international shipping--particularly if you have no copies of the video tape. I now use DHL for all of my international shipping/recieving and have not had any problems with them. They are however, more expensive--the last video tape that I sent to Chile ran me $80 US dollars--but it got there (the last one was lost). I know Wolf Camera out in your area should be able to make copies of a video pretty quickly--(ie, a few days)

Ana Ceci: Te mando el video y las fotos el lunes. Mi imagino que se puede mandar un video por Federal Express? El video es una mezcla de todas la peliculas que tomaron mis papas desde mas o menos 5th grade hasta high school. Todo fue tomado en super 8 asi es de que no tiene sonido y el video en general no es muy bueno. Lo mejor para ti seria verlo en fast forward para que escojas lo que quieras. Hay muchas peliculas de mi familia que no te interesaran pero hay mucho de la escuela tambien. Karen Jaris sale mucho ya que eramos intimas y siempre andabamos juntas en todo. Hay una pelicula en donde salen mucho Janet Husky y Heidi Franz. Tambien hay una muy buena de un juego de futbol de "Adidas" en donde salen Peter Neuhaus, Federico Gorbea, Javi Arizmendi, Jorge Cervantes, Marcos Diaz, etc. Te lo mando pero tiene de "V" de vuelta porque no tengo copia. Me lo puedes regresar el viernes o sabado. Igual las fotos.

Boy oh boy!!!!! This chat has really taken off. GOOD! It is so great to read all the postings and to have your memories come up of those great times. The chat is sure heating up now...I'll make my contribution towards 1000. I will call John Pike, Javier Arizmendi and Felipe Landa on Saturday and encourage them to come. I don't think Javier will be there because he is expecting his second child in May but I will check. Regarding crushes...I recognized so many of mine on the list of people who ARE coming. YEAHHHH. I can't wait to see ... everyone. My wife Elizabeth whom I met just a year and a half after graduation from AHS and my 4 year old daughter Sarah will be there as well. Boy will they be overwhelmed.

I can't believe we are now talking about former AHS crushes!!! I know a female, that when she arrived to AHS, lots of male heads turned. Alex , I have no idea where Jeroen is, I’m looking at the ‘72-’73 year book and your standing next to him, 4th grade, Prof. Manuel Vargas.

  All those “voyour’s” out there that feel nobody remembers you or you are remembered for reasons you hate or you think that you may not be accepted or whatever the case, I had some of those feeling’s. I find it hard that nobody would remember me for good or for bad, I went to the AHS for 10 year’s! I got into fight’s after school with Serrano, Acosta, Caballero, Douglas, Plummer and maybe even you Fernando, LOL. I was a terrible student, I wasn’t “popular”, wasn’t a star jock and Starting 8th I took a long “trip” into another dimension that ended at the age of 19. All turned out great, I love my life. So try writing something or go to the reunion, it’s not so bad and if you don’t…you’ll never know. Borron y cuenta nueva.

Anacecilia, I’ll give you a hint; Her first and second name’s are Latin, her last name is of Germanic origin.

As Maria says, there's probably a good number of people out there trying to decide whether to make it to the reunion or not. There are a lot of reasons why we shouldn't go, but they're all inside our little heads, not in anybody else's. Didar mentioned some a while back and I'm sure we all go through more or less the same process:

-Nobody will remember me (sooo unoriginal. Nobody remembers everybody else, but you're remembered by many)
-I'm bald (you too??)
-I'm fat (you too??)
-I've gone through six marriages (as long as you didn't poison them...)
-I'm ugly (ha ha, can't help you with that one)
-My ex will be there (come on, she doesn't even remember your NAME any more)
-I'm broke (quick, e-mail ANON)

Cindy and Georgina, I want to publicly declare I never had any feelings whatsoever for Ms. Watts and that jerk boyfriend of his, that Zimmerman guy. And stop calling her Peggy, Margaret being such a wonderful name. Ricardo and Alex J., now that's spilling the beans. Your turn, Kelly S.

Hi everyone, I'm so happy see so much excitement growing around our reunion. I wish everyone in the class could be there. For me this is a huge journey anticipated for nearly a year, and its not an easy thing to do. I really hope that all alumni who are in the DF will come for the reunion and see old friends and have a great time. For those from far away, this is it! Our huge,important reunion, please don't stay away if you can possibly make it. Get in touch with your old friends and persuade them to come. I hope all of the people who were not sure have decided to come. Tim Green, Jennifer Meaney and any others.

I am so exicited to see all of you and a bit embarassed at the prospect of not recognizing someone, surely it will be fine and we will all understand.

Please get on the web or the phone or whatever and try to persuade whoever isn't sure that this is an event not to be missed. See you soon.

Geor: another thing, ask about the mud baths over by the river with "Don Beto" around where the "Roca de Sacrificios" and where the unrestored archeological site of the ball game is, not many know about that little corner.
It is on the way out of Huatulco. You will have to park the car on the entrance of the dirt road and walk about a kilometer. I hope he is still there. Good luck.

Georgina: I believe you are going to Huatulco?!? When you get there, go to the bay (Santa Cruz) where the boats go out, right by the bay (small little bay) on the palapas of the left side find the Beach Club of the Biniguenda Hotel and ask them which one is the restaurant of the "Señora Martine". Her restaurant is a "palapa" that is right on the ocean front but since it is new I do not know which one it is (I do not even know the name). You get there, find her and "voila!", she is my mother in law. I know she is a great cook so food should be pretty darn good. Introduce yourself, tell her who you are, why you are there and enjoy.

No, it is not that I have nothing to do. It is simply that it is Friday, have been working like a dog and feeling a little rebellious. Plus since you are all passive listeners,...I abuse.

I tell you. At the "Colegio Americano" you never had to worry about the "security (*or was it insecurity*) self checking" hormonal "thermo-nuclear over-reactions".
I mean, since Elementary School up until the last day of school in 1981 (*and further for some, you know who you are*).
Jackie Kassem was a heart breaker for some of us boys back in early Elementary school.
Peggy Watts was a revolution. What a beautiful girl, I still remember. She used to take bus 15 and you can ask Mitchell Sorsby (and Stephen Sorsby for that matter, LOL) and I if we remember. LOL.
And then. AND THEN!!!!
Middle School arrived. I do not remember clearly if it was 3 years of suffering or was it pure joy or was this weird "it hurts but it feels so good" feeling. You could not stop looking and flirting everywhere. Sometimes being able to put two sentences together when talking to someone you liked or like usual blubbering some idiotic comment because your brain simply shut down.
And finally High School!!!!
Ninth grade does not count. One was more worried about surviving the walk down the hall in between classes without being smashed, pinched, kicked, punched, slapped, etc. by the juniors and seniors.
Tenth grade is a transition year.
But then Junior and Senior years!!!!!!!!!!!!
Crushes, attractions, likings, flirting???? It never ended. And you talk about a list? I tell you, my list would end up including everyone practically.
But there are always special people.
From Elementary's little notes and funny little gifts,...
to Middle School first real kiss (or half real for that matter) and unexpected trips on the Caribbean (do not ask)...
to High School where sometimes life smiles at us and grants us a wish...
to post AHS life that you can have the most wonderful experiences with your old classmates (in the least expected place and the least expected person).
Enough said without putting myself into more trouble.

  I didn’t know about the accident, I remember Pepino very well, he made fun of my name like many other’s, LOL, but we got along. I was thinking about the “teaching to fish” idea and maybe there is someone that has something to do with translating document’s etc, this could be done through the net at home. If he doesn’t have a PC, that’s where we all pitch in.

  I see Peggy has stirred up some old memories, well I can say she was my first real crush, Jerome and I (who was my best friend), would fight over who got to sit next to her, pero él era el galan de la clase, por lo tanto… I was looking at the yearbook and I must say that many of you girls “where”? very cute.

En un Gazette de hace un tiempo, la hermana de Julio Zamora (Lety Zamora '82) escribio que Alex Serrano es un renombrado notario en Queretaro. Yo creo que estaria muy bien que alguien tocara en su puerta!

Cindy: I agree, that was sooo totally heavy breathing! I must say though that my heart has beaten a little fast after hearing some of the guys' names too! I might even get gutsy at some point after some tequila and confess about the "secret crushes" I had in high school!

Elena - That was Kelley Coker, Suzy Maitland, Donna Keeler, and myself sharing a room in Dallas. Actually, Donna and I got more usage: after dancing at Arce's, we left "early" and got home around 2AM. Suzy and Kelley came in (I think one of them walked into the armoire) around 5AM. We had many laughs! I nominate you for point person....

Alex J. qué padre oir de ti también. No sé nada de Nacho pero tengo un par de teléfonos. Le acabo de marcar y era su voz en la máquina así nos estamos acercando. De Rafa Zamora no sé absolutamente nada. La última vez que vi a Nacho fue en el funeral de su papi, hace unos 2-3 años. Ahí estaba su primo Carlos Caballero también.

Cindy, I haven't seen "Rivers" in 15 years. I dropped by at his house a few months after the '85 quake (just making sure) and never saw him again. However there's an e-mail address in Sue Macs reunion pages so I just sent him a message.

The title of the e-mail was Pancho Francisco a dónde vas? Remember that? That was the beginning of a song everybody sang to Francisco, with some Sesame St. tune. The next part was "Voy a la casa de Margaret Watts" so as you can see it was basically the whole class with the same P. Watts epidemic. Fifth graders, man, I tell you.

One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, yes! I think we all took that book pretty seriously, and it made us think, which was the whole idea. My perception of Mr. Peterson is that he treated us as if we were older. Kids usually perceive that and often behave accordingly. Bueno con ese apodo que le pusieron, quién sabe. Qué risa. Way back you mentioned some other nickname you made up for somebody else and it was sooo funny. Why don't you put up a list of nicknames you remember? They're great.

Cary, great to hear from you and it was in part because of your interesting comments you wrote a long time ago that made me decide to write in this bulletin board.

I checked Julia's throught and she's o.k. Thanks Kelly and Cindy for your concern. I will for sure take that article and as soon as "my previous engagements" with the class of 81 are over I am defenetly taking a first aid course for baby's, including my mom, my husband and my nanny.

Does anybody NOT remember Peggy Watts?

I organized an "all class" reunion here in Dallas a few years past and we had a lot of fun. If enough people are willing to support the effort, I will be happy to run as point person.

We had it at the Marriott Quorum hotel in Addison that is close to shopping and it was only $69 a night. Kelly, Kelley and ? shared a suite and in the morning a bunch of us piled in there to chat. We have incriminating photos that include Peter and David Baird, but I am saving those for when I really need the cash.

Fernandito: We must be thinking of the reunion at the same time.

Had been a real long time since I logged on. I guess I stopped about a month ago when our chat was really slowing down... Though now there’s lots of catching up to do.

I am sad to see so many fellow classmates dropping off like flies from the attendee list. Oh well, those of us going will just have so much more Tequila for ourselves... Hey coming to think about it this is not a bad deal!

Alex L – Congrats! What a blessing.

On to the difficult subject: It broke my heart to read about Pepino. He and I used to be real close in elementary. I did know about his accident, and ran into him once about 10 years ago. It definitely made me think about how lucky I had been during all those times I was completely wasted and still came out OK. I guess most of us were lucky that way. Life can be very tough sometimes, and it is sure not making an exception for him. So, if someone is in a position that can offer him a job please do so. And if it is possible for him to move to the US I will chip in to pay for his flight there. (Cindy, muchas gracias!)

But back to lighter topics - I, like many of you, can’t wait till the reunion. We are going to have such a blast! From our side it is now official, little Oliver will not be traveling with us. We figured the time change will be difficult for him, and specially since we will only be in Mexico 2 weeks, so by the time he gets used to that schedule it will be time to come back to Europe. And besides, we will be going back to Mexico for 3 weeks at the end of the year so we will be taking him then. The news from his side is that he has now started to stand and is trying to walk. He pulls himself up from whatever is available, and then walks (wobbles) by holding himself along the edge. Unfortunately though, his wobbling becomes stronger and stronger until he falls, and sometimes quite hard. He of course immediately starts to cry, so we pick him up and comfort him, so he stops crying and immediately thereafter starts trying to pull himself up to walk again. And then, when he is not trying to stand the is crawling all over the place trying to eat everything in site: The toys, the couch, the table, the plants, the dirt, our legs... It’s a good thing we do not have any pets! On the other hand, we have had this mole in our back yard which we can’t get rid of, so perhaps its an idea to set him loose back there and see what happens!

Cindy – me cae que yo me apunto a todas las reunions que hagamos en un futuro. Es más, tal vez deveríamos organizar una reunión cada 5 años no matter what. Think about it, so many things happen in 5 years, and yet it slips by so fast. It just hit me when someone recently posted that we had been writing messages for a year now – WOW!!! In any case, how about planning the reunion in Europe? I didn’t think so, but you can’t blame me for trying!!!

Oh well, time to go. Only 28 days to go!!

AnaCeci: I read your story about Julia and I got a little quiver in my throat..how frightfull! I had a similar experience with my daughter, and thank God, it was not the first time I had to use CPR skills. The next paragraph may help you next time.

AnaCeci: your story about Pepino also broke my heart. Here in the US there are several programs that cater to headinjuries and their return to work..is there anything like that in Mexico? If not, would Jose consider moving to the US? If there is a remote possiblity I can start checking into the programs in the Denver area had/or in some major cities in the US. I have had the privedge of treating head injuries many years ago and I have even seen professionals return back to work in some capacity..There is a lot of support systems for head injured here. Please let me know and I will start working on it right away.

Alex McG: No seas asi! Yes, I do remember you but I unfortunately left AHS in 1979 after my freshman year. I had been there since '68 (kindergarden). My friend's name was Sully Jacome and I haven't heard from her for years. She and I got into soooomuch trouble in Mr. Peterson's (we used to call him Peterbutt)class. Remember the story "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisavich?" The whole long story was about him hoarding a piece of bread while he was at a work camp/prison in Siberia. I wish I could thank Mr. Peterson now..I think I learned a little bit about being humble and being grateful for what I had.

You and Fransisco where the quiet "desmadrosos" in the back of the class. I actually had a little crush on Fransisco back then but I am sure he didn't know it. Did he graduate from AHS? What is he doing now? Is he coming to the reunion?

Ricardito: I will try to see if I can track Marlene's e-mail down, I know she posted it here a long time ago, but I think that Jean-Claude's is listed on Sue Mac's class list.

A todos: Thanks for feedback for the 25th reunion. We are going to have so many MIA'a (missing in action) at this reunion I don't see how we can wait until the 30th. I will get to work on it after this reunion, and certainly we can take suggestions for places other than Mexico City. I think class of '77 is in Acapulco.

Just a side note, Matt Lawton (whom left after his freshman year) will not be attending either. He finished high school in Jakarta and his reunion is the same weekend in Bali!! His sister Liz, married Brian Collin's older brother.

Tonio: Disney sounds great..Kelly Sherck just took her kids. I am dying to take Alessa..but I think taking her on "space mountain" (my favorite) would be considered child abuse. Did you have to hang out with the little mermaid the whole time?
