Dwight, the immoral minority? You might be the only blondie going, but I don't think you'll be the only immoral agent!... As an American I... I will do my best to do my duty to God an my country, to obey the Scout Law, to help other people at all times, to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and, what? morally straight! Well, regardless of who makes it or not, it's going to be a really fun time. For myself I wish I had discovered the QT chat and other internet connections back in 2000 before the 20th reunion as I would have certainly made that one. And, the last time I was in Mexico was the summer of 1982 after my freshman year in college. I managed to spend a weekend in Acapulco that June with Fred David '82 and had a really awesome time. Unlike most of the rest of you here on this chat, I didn't have the wonderful experience of making as many friends or spending years together in school. But, at least I got to spend my junior and senior year of high school at AHS and made some really awesome friends while having the time of my life. I can't imagine doing all the cool things and getting away with all the fun in today's day and age.

John, I will do my best as an American to represent the immoral minority while I'm in Mexico :)

Well, I had a great anniversary and all went well. Sushi dinner was fantastic and we all had a great time. Thank you all who gave us warm wishes.

Alas, we are also opting for Hawaii. Thanks all for your input. Here's to wishing you all a wonderful time at the reunion. Dwight can carry the liberal torch on my behalf <g> as I know most of you already do as well <g>. Guess I'll miss the mud-wrestling and the tennis playing (if not the endless tributes to the porcelain god from all the partying <g>).

AnaCeci: Thanks. My problem is that I will be in Puerto Vallarta that week with the family. I would need to fly to Mexico City then to Acapulco and then back again. I am flying Frontier to Puerto Vallarta and I am having problems changing my tickets as they only have one flight, and not daily flights. I have thought of driving down to Acapulco from Puerto but our flight leaves in the am on Sunday (I am anticipating either myself or Trent having a hangover--and if Trent gets together with John, it would most likely be Trent)so driving back to Puerto Vallarta early Sunday morning doesn't sound like fun. Currently there are no Monday flights. But I will keep on working on it. I would be considererably cheaper (an thus no whining from me) if our original trip to Cancun in November would have worked--then I could come to the reunion sans little monstros...pero ahi vemos. Sigo buscando como....I have thought of ditching Trent and the kids in Puerto and I would just go to Aca but Trent wasn't too keen on the idea. I don't understand why!!!

Cindy, I am sorry to hear you won't be able to make it! Jodi and all of you who are on the fence, if you make the financial sacrifice, you will be alright!What is money for except for things like this reunion? If your bank account is hit, you will make, you'll come out of it fine, you may feel like cash went down ower than you desire,but,hey, that is what cash is for! And soon you will be back on track. At the end ofthis life, you won't be regretting you are missing a thousand bucks in your bank account, but you will regret not spending money on something like this. Now, there are some that genuinely can not afford it at all, and there is no shame in that, there are other, though, who may just not like to deplete their bank account under a certain level, and although that is generally wise, hey, an occasion like this is worth the risk, you will recover, and you will be all the happier you got to see the friends you grew up with one more time,and that is something you will not regret at the endo the road. On the other hand, if you miss it because you did not feel like making the sacrifice and because you felt you could not spend money that with a little sacrifice you could,well, missing your childhood friends is something that you will regret. So... weigh it out.

I, for one, am flying a thousand miles and spending a thousand bucks... and I don't even drink! Go figure!

Anyway, I mentioned that the Sons of DeWitt Colony Texas were posting chapters from my book on their historical site, they have been working at it and they want to make my stuff a permanent feature of their site, now, that is MAJOR!!! Regarding airfare: the prices from Orange County to Acapulco have not increased due to the holiday. They have remained at approx $500 round trip on many airlines, even American Airlines which is often more expensive. I have found the best deals on Travelocity.com. Are you guys checking all the websites? You guys should try expedia, priceline, orbitz, cheaptickets, etc.

Yo tengo una oracion que me encanta y dice asi. "Hay quienes pueden y no quieren, hay quienes quieren y no pueden, nosotros que queremos y podemos, gracias te damos Senior". Y la verdad es que lo aplico en todo. Cuando fueron los 20 de John, ese fin de semana, my father in law died. No se pudo. Por estas fechas, I should've been giving birth, but I'm not. AnaCeci: Mil perdones! You are right we did say Memorial Day weekend would be perfect!! I was surprised however, when I looked into airfares that they were so high. I was told by both United and Frontier that the cut the number of flights to Mexico after spring break and airfares also go up. I would really love to go, but unfortunately I cant. Dominic , you are so right about that the 30 is 5 years from now, and we had better plan. Unfortunately, there are always people whom can't make it. My husband was surprised however, how many people made it to our reunion. His 20 only about 1/3 of his class showed up and most of those people still live in town!

I unfortunately will not make the reunion either. I have a previous commitment--we will be in Puerto Vallarta on a time share exchange which was a second exchange from a cancelled Cancun trip in November. No matter how I look at it trying to fly from Puerto Vallarta with 2 kids would be $$$$ and the logistics just wont work, unfortunately.
I agree with Elena as far as Memorial Day weekend goes. Frontier is generally a great no frills airline but it discontinues some of its major flights to Mexico by then particularly to some of the beach destinations.
I will be thinking of everyone though!!

I hate to say this, but it is not looking like I can make the reunion. I have a wedding to go to and it would totally break the budget to go to both the reunion and the wedding. Since the reunion is on a high-priced weekend, that pretty much made the decision. Please promise that for year 30 we avoid Memorial Day/Easter and all those weekends that "justify" ridiculous airfares.

HEY!!! COME ON YA'LL!!! The more of you who go, the bigger the turn out, right? So just GO!!! I mean, it has now been 25 years since we graduated from high school... TWENTY FIVE YEARS!!! And it seems to me that many of you have forgotten the friends you loved. Hey, I remember playing in kinder garden with Francisco Rios, and when I saw him five years ago he said "I am you and you are me", I remember going to Isauro Flores' house as a little bitty kid and playing with a helicopter, and thinking his mama was so pretty, I remember going to Alex Juarez's party when he turned 7 or 8 in Cuernavaca and driving back in his mom's car and thinking she was driving so fast, I remember hugging Sammy Jinich when we came back to school from the summer I believe in fourth grade, I remember playing football with Craig Dudley and Scott Odabashian and David Laird and Paul Cadena when we were little kids in 5th and 6th grade, I remember going just about every weekend to Andres Dekovic's house after 9th grade, I remember playing with Billy Parra in his yard being chased by the water sprinkler, and playing air guitar and drums in his room, I remember loving a beautiful girl so much it hurt, I remember playing football with the AHS Bears, I remember Tuesday nights with the Boy Scouts of America, I remember Sady Hawkins, the Hop and the high school prom, I remember our world inside the walls of the American School was a completely different world from the world around us, and I remember how those kids in the Mexican school spit at us when we went to take a test in their school just because our bus said "Colegio Americano", I remember that was us, a tight little world all its own, kids with no home town but each other, I remember all of you with warm affection in my heart... and so I want to see you,even if I have to travel over 1000 miles to Acapulco, that's what a reunion is all about,my friends... maybe those of you who are going should post some good memories here to encourage those who are doubting, JUST COME!

Hackers have released a sample code for a virus that could infect both Linux and Windows PCs.

The virus, which was given the double name Virus.Linux.Bi.a/ Virus.Win32.Bi.a, was reported Friday by security firm Kaspersky Lab. Security researchers worry that the malicious code may be part of a disturbing new trend of viruses that can run on Windows, as well as other operating systems that have been largely ignored by hackers.

"The virus is written in assembler and is relatively simple," Kaspersky wrote in a posting to the company's Viruslist.com Web site. "However, it is interesting in that it is capable of infecting the different file formats used by Linux and Windows - ELF and PE format files respectively." The ELF (Executable and Linking Format) and PE (Portable Executable) file formats are used to format certain types of binary files in Linux and Windows, including the .exe and .dll files used in Windows.

The virus appears to have no practical application, Kasperky said. "It's a classic proof-of-concept code, written to show that it is possible to create a cross-platform virus," Kaspersky said. "However, our experience shows that once proof-of-concept code is released, virus writers are usually quick to take the code, and adapt it for their own use."

Security training organisation The SANS Institute agreed with Kaspersky's assessment, saying that the software should come as a warning to Linux and Mac OS X users who may think their computers are "invulnerable" to virus threats.

"As the developers of viruses continue to research this, we will see [more] cross platform malware come about in the future," wrote SANS Internet Storm Centre contributor Swa Frantzen, in a Friday Web posting. (isc.sans.org/diary.php?storyid=1248&rss)

"Protecting the Linux, Unix and Mac OS X, machines with antivirus measures is a good thing to start on now if you haven't done so already," he added.

Protesters seize pumping station, cut Acapulco's water supply to protest dam project


ACAPULCO, Mexico – About 100 radical farmers seized a pumping plant that supplies about 70 percent of Acapulco's water on Tuesday to protest government plans to build a US$1 billion hydroelectric dam, said Miguel Angel Castro, head of the city's water commission.
 
The tourist and residential areas of the Pacific coast port were not immediately affected by the cutoff, and the only reported water shortages affected about 80,000 residents in slum communities that cling to the mountainsides surrounding Acapulco bay.

Zeferino Torreblanca, governor of Guerrero state – which includes Acapulco – said “we want to solve this through dialogue,” but also vowed not to allow the protest to affect the city and noted that “preparations are being taken to enforce the law.”

Torreblanca supports the dam project, which he says would guarantee Acapulco's water supply for at least the next 50 years. Opponents say the dam would flood farmland and benefit only rich tourist developments.

The takeover occurred in the town of Cacahuatepec, about 20 miles east of Acapulco, on the banks of the Papagayo river. The pumping station draws water from the river – the same one that is to be dammed – to supply Acapulco.

However, the protesters did not seize a second pumping plant that continues to supply water to the city's tourist areas. In residential areas served by the seized plant, there are municipal storage tanks that hold more than a day's supply of water.

The protesters are demanding the cancellation of the dam project and a meeting with Torreblanca. They did not say how long they planned to occupy the pumping plant.

Rather than some cumbersome piece of furniture (which I do not need), or turquoise (which is also superfluous), it's a toss up between a nice Kauai beach for a week OR a sushi dinner out, a handwritten poem, and one of those nice, narrow rakes to get in between my perennials.

Homero: I did check and it looks like tuquoise is associated with 5th, 11th, and 55th <g>, but not 17th, at least, not anywhere else I can find though that does not rule it out as there is only 6 years between 5 and 11 and add another 6 it could well be again on the 17th. So, if I give my wife furniture with studded turquoise gems in it, I may be okay <g>.

Okay, now for those of you who are married, or know the answer, my wife and I are celebrating our 17th wedding anniversary this month and I know that the modern gift is FURNITURE, but can anyone tell me what the traditional 17th wedding anniversary gift category is? Well, as there are no more answers to the trivia challenge (you chat flakes, you), here are the official with additional accepted answers:

Dominic, I called Alex Loya earlier tonight at home told him that I made our reservations at the Hotel Emporio. Yes, you heard right Alex Loya and I are secret, long lost lovers and will be sharing a room in Acapulco. Alex, they only had the king bed available and I said that would be ok.

Man, my Spanish is getting way too rusty and I guess the hotel clerk decided to forward me on to our contact Ines. She was very polite and I apologized for my poor attempts at mixing in Spanish with my English. She must've thought I was a real dork :) Anyhow, she recognized our group and the rate Ramon quoted us, so all I have to say is Ramon you ROCK and what a sweet price for an all inclusive stay! We all need to tip well that weekend.

I guess we can all figure out the caravan details to Aca later, but I think right now Alex and I were planning on catching a ride Dominic and Salvador Serrano, of course if there's room. Also, Alex's flight back from Mexico City is Monday at 7:30 a.m. and mine is at noon.

That's sweet that Craig Dudley will be there too!

John: True that one would figure there is only one soulmate per life time. I believe that most people (yet not all)get married when they are in love and convinced they have found their soulmate. Reality is that we all make mistakes. Love is blinding, and it's easy to overlook aspects of a person's personality during the period of euphoria. One would think that you should not make the decision of spending a lifteime together during that period. It is during that period that most people make that decision. As for my children, they are actually extremely happy and doing great. I won't share all the details but I can tell you that the situation they used to livein 2 and 1/2 yrs ago was not healthy. They now have an incredible role model which they did not have before. Thanks for your congrats though.

If you crawled up the metal ladder that was attached to the side of the building (next to the theater room) you would find an access opening that lead to the huge storage tank. I used to go up there occasionally to inspect for organic activity.

I've heard that divorced men tend to marry within 2 years. Apparently it takes a bit longer for the "bad taste" of a bad marriage to leave women as the average time for them to remarry is closer to 4-5 years.

Speaking about tequila, I'm always keeping my eye out for individuals at the liquor store browsing the tequilas. I usually step up to them and start giving them the gospel about plata, reposado, anejo and give them my picks for the different price ranges. And, the one bottle that I always recommend in the 20 and under price range is El Jimador reposado, which is the bottle your brother Julio sent me for being a 1000 poster on the 80 chat site. It was was ranked number 1 in a tequila tasting contest we had a couple of years ago with several AHS alumni at a pachanga in Tampa at Gaby Hebin's (Bino) house.

Andres, mi querido amigo, just now I was praying and thinking about what you said. I really do appreciate your motivation, my friend, but I have to say that there is no doubt at all to where my baby is, or Alex J.'s babies or Anacenci's babies, or the babies of anyone else among us who died in infancy, they are in the Presence of God. When King David's baby died he said of his baby "He can not come to me, but I will go to him" expecting that when he died he would go to be with the Lord in heaven. The Apostle Paul said "I was alive once without the law, when the law came sin revived and I died" meaning that when he was a young child and could not understand the law of God to intentionally break it, he was alive spiritually in a state of innocence, so that if he had died in infancy or young childhood, he would have been alive in the Presence of God. Jesus said specifically "Let the little children come to me and forbid them not, for to such aas these belongs the Kingdom of God". When a baby dies, my good friend, there is no doubt at all, not one little doubt as to where they are, they are not in limbo, they are not in hell, they are not in purgatory, little children that die go immediately to the Presence of the Living God, nobody has to doubt that.

And in the Presence of God, there is fullness of joy, in other words, my baby and Alex's babies and Anaceci's babies and the babies of all of those among us who have died in infancy are not feeling our pain. You mention that the sooner we get over our pain, the sooner our baby will stop feeling our suffering and rest in peace... imagine that! When does one get over the death of a baby that one loved? When? When does one get over the loss of any one whom you truly loved? Never. Love never fails. I mean, you get over it in the way that life goes on, if its a young lady you loved, well, life goes on, you get over it in the way that you can find someone to love again, you can be happy and have fun and keep on going with the joys and good times of life, but in your heart of hearts, you never stop loving your loved ones and because you never stop loving your loved ones, at times you may feel the pain that love brings, in a dream you may see your baby or your loved one ocassionaly, and you will feel the love, and the pain at times, and you will wake up ocassionally with a tear in your eye, and that's ok and that is normal, and you get up and go on and you don't dwell on it all the time, and you hug your kids and have fun but because love never fails, in your heart of hearts you will always love those you truly loved and you will at times feel a little pain that love will always bring, thus the promise that God will one day wipe all our tears from our eyes, if we put our faith and trust in His only Son Jesus.

Imagine that my friend,if our babies or those we love could not find rest until we got over the pain, well, they would never find rest, because even when you get over it and go on with the joys and happy times of life, the love for them will always be there and with it the pain that love brings.

Thank you, my friend for your kind words and concern, but I just had to say that, there is no doubt where my baby and Alex's babies and Anacenci's babies and the babies of all among us who have died in infancy are, they are without one little doubt in the Presence of God,they are not in limbo or purgatory, both places which the Bible denies exist, and in the Presence of God, there is fullnes of joy, and that joy is not hampered by them feeling our pain in this fallen earth, even the period of mourning is designed by God to bring healing, and that healing process would be hindered by the belief that while one is mourning our loved ones are suffering waiting for us to stop mourning, that is terrible! Alex M. thank you for focusing my attention on my little blessings! Today we had to tell them that the new baby was not coming home. I told them he went to be with Jesus. Little Karaleigh who is four years old (she is the one with the glasses) got this really sad look and said"the baby died?" I told her the baby is alive with God,that he is walking in streets of gold and is very happy where he is, that they have a little brother or sister in heaven, and they just accepted that and smiled and went back to play. Little bit looked so alarmed when little Alex had asked if that happened because Carissa had jumped on mommy's tummy the other day. We assured her it had nothing to do with that, that it was not her fault at all, and her face became peaceful again. Imagine her carrying that guilt trip! No way! My littles, as yours those of you who have them, are truly so innocent! After a brief sad realization that the new baby was not coming home, they took it really well, for which I am grateful! If they had started to cry I think my wife and I would've both joined right in!

So this guy David Crosby (Crosby Stills Nash and Young if you remember) gave a newborn child for adoption once. Thirty years later someone knocks at his door claiming to be his son. Story goes he didn't believe him, so the son offered to play something together to prove it. They immediately clicked and not only was Crosby convinced, but are now making music together. Crosby Pevar Raymond, or CPR. Really worth listening. Vocal arrangements a la CSNY but with better compositions. And that kid (Pevar) is a real genius.

Hello my friends. I come to you with a heavy heart, today I found out how children hurt. As I briefly mentioned some time ago, my wife and I had had the happy news that we were going to have one more baby. Our baby was 14 weeks. This morning, however, or yesterday morning, exactly 24 hours ago, my wife started bleeding profusely, we rushed to the hospital here on base at Fort Bragg. Well, to make a long story short, our baby died, she miscarried, something that has never happened before to us... I don't understand... I have served the Lord to the best of my ability for 20 years, my wife and I prayed that He would give us one more baby, He seemed to answer our request, but today He struck a hard blow! My heart is braking, and although I never saw my baby, I loved him... or her deeply! My baby that I will never hold... was he a boy or was she a girl? I don't know... all I know is I loved my baby, and I was really looking forward to holding him in my arms, or her,and playing with my baby. The Lord sometimes deals us hard stripes, yet HIs purpose is always good, that I trust. When we came out of the hospital, with the nurse pushing my wife on a wheel chair and me walking by her side, it was like so many times before... except this time there was no baby in her arms... that is a hard blow! My heart was sinking! Now, when I look at my beautiful children,there is one missing... yet I know and I am comforted by the fact as sure as you and are real, that my baby is alive in the Presence of God and that one day I will see him and hold him, or her, in my arms.

You can actually see the Trifid and the Horsehead nebula near the left side of the photo.

The planet pictures were shot by holding a video camera to the eyepiece and stacking and processing the images on the PC. All the comet photos (execpt for Hyakutake) and M42 were shot through a homemade device called a barn door camera tracker, 200mm telephoto lens, and a 35mm SLR camera mounted to the top. It's basically two pieces of wood attached to a piece of piano hinge that you point at the north star and a screw that you turn. It's a crude equatorial mount and is good for a few minutes of star tracking. And, nowadays with a web camera or any digital cameras one can do some really cool astro photo stuff with much better results.

Flyers, have you considered flying into Toluca airport? I've heard there are several cheap options there and the airport has a bus service to Mexico City, a 30-40 min ride. Not sure it's worth the trouble, it's just an idea.

Another option for Texans would be to simply drive down. Laredo to DF is about 11 hours. There's a divided road all the way to DF so you don't have to worry about passing slow trucks. The road is good and the toll is something like $20 bucks. Of course, the DF-Aca toll is more like $50 bucks as Ramon mentioned.

The fancier looking reflectors with digital setting circles or computerized "go to" functions are nice, but are really meant for finding deep sky objects. With minor effort, any good amateur astronomer with a sky chart can find those objects without that. Oh, and another thing I didn't mention is that 3 inch (76.2mm) reflector has a longer focal length of 700 mm with a focal ratio of 9.2 or f/9.2 The longer the focal ratio, the better the contrast on planets and the moon. The focal ratio is just the focal lenght divided by the diameter of the objective. 700mm / 76.2mm = 9.2

If you opt for a refractor, stay away fromt the short tube (ha! isn't that always the case) designs and go for at least the Orion Astroview 80mm achromatic EQ refractor at $229

Anacecilia, I'm sorry also for not replying earlier to your telescope question. Stay away from any department store telescope, especially refractors that boast the power on the box (like 250x) Most telescopes that you'll find in hobby shops, malls, and department stores are probably not worth buying, especially the 60 mm refractors that are on poor quality tripods. Most amateur astronomers joke that scopes like those are probably better with leggo mounts than the tripods they come with. My telescope is an 8" F/7 Dobsonian, an inexpensive type of Newtonian reflector that was designed by John Dobson, a monk, out of simple materials, but with quality optics. I paid $240 bucks for that telescope about 10 years ago from a company called Coulter that was bought out by Murnaham Instruments. Now, considering that you do live in Mexico City which is very light polluted, you'll be limited in what you'll be able to see in the night sky. For deep space objects like nebula and galaxies you might as well forget it as even with moderately large aperature telescopes you'll need dark skies away from the light pollution. But, that is a good thing to know in the sense that it means your viewing should be focused (no pun intended :) on the moon and the planets. You see, the moon and planets are so bright from the reflected sunlight that small scopes do a fairly decent job no matter what light pollution you have. The thing to keep in mind is that there are basically two types of telescopes, the refractor and the reflector (that of course is not completely true as there are variations of those two types). John mentioned Meade as a good brand which makes fine telescopes. Celestron is another well made brand, but keep in mind both of those companies have low end models which can be cheap in quality. A great online store that has been around for many years is Orion Telescopes (and they have the cool name for a website www.telescope.com :) The refractor is probably what most people think of when they picture a telescope, it's primary lens focuses light down toward the end of the tube and you look through the eyepiece in the end of the telescope, usually through a right angle erecting prism. A reflector uses two mirrors, one a primary to focus the light to a secondary mirror that reflects the light 45 degrees to an eyepiece near the top of the telescope. The one nice thing about a reflector is that the mirror reflects all wavelengths of light equally without any distortion of the image at the eyepiece. Cheaper refractors suffer from what is called chromatic abberation where the different frequencies of light reach the eyepiece at different focal lengths. This causes the image of the planet in the eyepiece to have a fuzzy orange or other color glow around it. With the moon it's not as noticable. But, if you care to look at Saturn or Jupiter (the two real planetary gems) then I would suggest getting a scope like the SpaceProbe 3 EQ reflector from Orion Telescopes. At $129 dollars it is a great starter scope absolutely the best deal for an equatorial mounted telescope. It looks cool too. The only thing about an equatorial mounted telescope is you'll have to orient the scope so the axis of the tripod points towards the north star. That might be a little difficult with the light pollution, but if you can make out the Big Dipper constellation you can use the two stars of the lip of the cup to find the north star. You can probably find some sites on the web to help you with that. Once the telescope is roughly polar aligned then you'll just have to use one of the slow motion control knobs to track the planet to counter the rotation of the Earth. The better the alignment, the less you'll have to use the declination control. Hope all this helps.

Heyyy Alison, I sure remember you too. Anacecilia: I'm sorry, but just got around to re-reading some of the post and I realized I never answered your telescope question (not that I will now <g>). I received mine as a handy-me-down gift and it has its shortcomings. It is a no-name brand and therefor, I don't recommend it <g>. I have heard of some mis-alignment with mirrors on quite a few lower end Mead telescopes, though they are a popular, which is what the salesperson will always tell you ("They sell really good and everyone knows the brand."). There are several horror stories.

My best recommendation is to hook up with a local astonomy group and ask their advice (if Dwight doesn't chime in with a better recommendation -- and it better not be Mead <g>). You'll also get to try out what they have on one of their star gazing evenings. Here's another resource: http://www.scopereviews.com/

This guy is definitely a geek (if not freak) about telescopes, but he does have some good advice and reviews quite a few telescopes. Overall, I do hope you get around to do some good star gazing, if not neighbor gazing.

I’ve been dreaming about going back to Mexico City for years, so this is going to be really exciting. It should be interesting to see if I can remember how to get from our old house to the school on the old school bus route.

It would also be awesome to drive to Acapulco if it’s only 4-5 hours, although it does sound a bit pricey to rent a car. Remember how great the new toll highways in the mid-1970s were?

Hi Alison, I checked into renting a car and it is nuts to rent a car in Mexico. It was about $130 a day for mid size car. You then have to get the insurance and that ads up another $20 a day. You may want to check into flying or driving with someone that has a larger vehicle. We are all looking forward to seeing you again. While in Mexico City you could possibly hire a driver to take you around. Someone must have a contact for an executive car/driver.

Ana Ceci, 5 hours? I have driven it in about 4 hours and stopping. The new highway is awesome. The tolls are a bit expensive if my memory doesn't fail me.
Nancy the kids and I are flying in to Mexico City on the 24th and then driving to Acapulco on Friday. My sister is lending me her car.

Allison, good question! Having you show off the school and your old house to your husband would be awsome. Mexico City is still magnificent, although trafic, etc.etc. are as "magnificent", could be overwhelming and nerve breaking. The drive to Acapulco in the new highway is about 5 hours. We will be driving and I'm sure a group of us could meet in a certain place and "irnos siguiendo". I wouldn't advise you either way, would have to think the answer, but if you do decide to come to the D.F. and not drive, you could always use a "safe taxi". I could also help you by showing you the school and stuff.

John the limiting magnitude for my 8" Newtonian is 14 and the magnitude from the supernova that produced the gamma ray burst in the constellation Aries is only expected to peak around 16 on March 5th, two magnitudes fainter than the visual limit of my scope. I could probably snap a digital picture if I had a decent clock drive, but that cost some more bucks. I just need a bigger telecope to probe the heavenly bodies.

I have a question for those living in the DF. It's been 30 years since I've been in Mexico City, so I obviously don't know the current lay of the land.

Bill and I are flying into Mexico City on points for the reunion, but don't yet have airline reservations to get to Acapulco. We are trying to decide if we should do that or rent a car and drive to Acapulco. I would love to show Bill our school and my old house, but he is understandably apprehensive about the thought of driving in Mexico City after some of the stories I've told him. Hell, I'm apprehensive about driving in Mexico City!

Last winter we drove down to Mazatlan and in Nogales, Sonora we were waiting at a red light when a police car came rushing in and played bumper cars with a truck in the next lane. But otherwise everyone was great on our trip. The federales were quite protective of tourists.

But Mexico City is another story. I remember very well the traffic on the Periferico. And where we lived on Paseo de la Reforma. What kind of insurance do they have if you rent a car? Would we be better to fly to/from Acapulco and hire a taxi to go sightseeing in the DF?

I really don't know how the mind works, or when is it that our memories become such a big part of us, but what I do know and realize now is how important the elementary years are. As you all might remember, Heidi, Lori and I were best friends through out elementary. After what I just lived with Heidi and her family with Leo, it still amazes me to realize how strong those bonds are. I guess we are all lucky for those friendships we made at ASF and we are even luckier to be able to keep in touch, even if it is through the internet, even if we meet for 3 days every 5-10 years. A veces queremos hacer cosas y nada mas no se puede. Pero a todos los que si puedan, traten de ir. Vale la pena.

Had the sad duty of spending a weekend at the Emporio and found out they have great Asian Food and Killer Margaritas. The Adult Pool is a dream, alhtough I had my kids with me.

Alex - Sorry I did not respond to your dog question. The day you posted it we flew out to CA as my mother-in-law had open-heart surgery. At 87-years, she had a heart valve replaced (with one from a cow) and a bypass. She was in ICU for over a week and is still in the hospital. So while Sonoma is a great place to visit, spending it in the ICU is no fun. But she is a very strong, determined Texas lady, so we are hopeful that her recovery goes well. To make things more stressful for everyone, we got a call that her sister's husband is dying in Texas, cancer and leukemia at the same time. We anticipate getting a sad call any day now. On top of that, our neighbor who was watching our cats called to say he could not find one of our cats and that he'd found a dead one squashed in the street. It was not till we got home late last night (after two delayed flights) that we could confirm that all of our furry guys were safe and sound in the house.

Dwight: Ah, preaching to the choir. Many more small businesses are finding the advantages of using Linux over other server OS (and desktop OS) if they have cost concerns. CFO's and CIO's in larger corporations need to be paying head as well. Even with this biased report, it is clear to see that overall the value proposition of Linux is far superior than that of the "Redmond" company <g>.

I hadn't had a chance to post anything but hey man you did the right thing. Any dog that bites your kids or acts funny has gotta go before something really ugly happens. A year ago we had to give away a shnauzer that had been with us for three years. When we got a new Whippet puppy she just got so jealous that
she repeatedly attacked a french poodle that has been with us for 12 years. My wife didn't want her to leave but I told her we have to do this before she
kills her... well the last attack was so bad the vet spent a full morning patching up the old poodle. She made it but I think some wires burned up cause ever since she's been a growler. She even tried to snap my foot two weeks ago, good thing reflexes are still there. My wife won't give her away cause she's so old I guess she feels it's like putting granma on the asylum. Anyway, I'm afraid eventualy a decision will have to be made.

Alex L. The poodle is actually pretty tough. It thinks it weighs 200 pounds. As to that golden retriever its paw tracks lead in the direction of a farm down a dirt road. I will be paying them a visit. Sorry to hear about Snowdip, but you did the right thing. You could have spent major dollars on obedience training and still have ended up with an troublesome dog. Don't second guess yourself.

Hey John M! You've got eight horses!... and one little toy poodle?... Ever heard of Broke Back Mountain? JJ :) No, but seriously, that happened today?! Wow! Talk about object lesson! Praise the Lord is right my friend, good to hear nothing happened to your boy! And you have turned into a bonafide mountain man fightin' wild beasts!... that more than makes up for the toy poodle in my book! :)

Thanks Laurie, too late though, I took Snowdip to the Haven this morning. Earlier I woke up to the sound of Snowdip growling at my son, who gets up earlier than everybody else on Saturday morning to watch cartoons, I jumped up out of bed terrified at the thought Murphy's law would kick in and she would realy hurt my son just before I got rid of her! I put her out in the back yard until I was ready to take her away. My wife treid teaching her about play, like you said, but whe was not learning, and just yesterday or th day before, the day after I first asked you all for ya'lls opinion, she up and grabbed my daughter Karaleigh by the neck, she for some reason started getting really bad, I think after she had a seizure a couple of weeks ago, maybe that had something to do with it. We took her to the vet, spent 700 bucks, and nothing appears to be wrong with her, the vet said she may grow out of the seizures, but I think that's when it started getting really bad in the last week and a half or so.

Anyway, I took her to the Haven and they were not hapy to see me bringing her back. But I explained to them what happened, and I stressed that she must not be with children, but she could be with an assertive adult, but it sounds like she is going to be executed anyway, the lady said she can't put her up for adoption and she can't keep her for the next 12 years because she's got too many animals to take care of... kind of like John... so, I think Snowdip aka Cujo ojos de diablo is going down the green mile... I was really sad about it, it realy breaks my heart, but I can not take the risk, John is right, you can not take the chance if there is any doubt. Anyway, thank you all for your advice, you all addressed what I needed to hear, whether training would work, and whether being docile most of the time counts... now we're going to have to start sweeping the floor after dinner!

Alex Loya. I am an animal lover. I have eight horses, one pony, four cats, and a miniature toy poodle. So I have an open mind when it comes to this subject. But if there exists even a shadow of a doubt concerning the safety of your children then this is a no brainer. Today as we were pulling our son Barrett through the snow at the far end of the farm we were joined by a large golden retriever that I did not recognize. He seemed friendly enough. He was wagging his tail and following us. We were having a good time. Barrett felt uneasy with the dog. We should have headed home then. Children have a keen sense of intuition. When Barrett got off the sled the dog suddenly took him down. It happened in a flash. I jumped on the dog's back and wrapped my arm around its throat. It was growling. It released Barrett and I continued strangling it. Adrenaline was pumping. Nina put Barrett back on the sled while I stayed to deal with the dog. I chased him for a better part of a kilometer. Barrett is okay, thank the lord. If the dog ever shows up on the farm again it will breath its last. Alex, place your puppy up for adoption now. No vale la pena amigo.

well, I got up from bed early to write this post, but it looks like you've made a decision Alex. That's fine, but I was going to say that it would be a good idea to check with a dog trainer about your problem.

When we first got Lizzie, she would play rough and sometimes bite too hard. We took her to doggy school and learned that dogs have an incredible ability to control their jaws and that they can acutally play rough without ever hurting you. So I used the word "gentle" with her when she'd bite and I've remove myself from her (like ignoring her). Very soon, she learned what type of rough play is OK and which is not. Now we play rough (she thinks she can destroy shoes and socks) and she fights with my hand, but she doesn't hurt my hands at all. At first, she could bite into the skin and draw blood, now she never does that.

The growling I can't help with. I do know that Lizzie is sometimes jealous of her Daddy - if I kiss him (my husband) before I kiss her, she growls at me. It's not dangerous - but she's asserting her place in the pack. She thinks she's queen.

My Dad had a cat that only loved him. So she'd growl and bite anyone who pet her - except for Dad.

Oddly, these were 2 females in "love" with their male masters. Sounds like you. Maybe there's something about opposite sexes.

Anway, do what you think is right,because your family does come first. But I thought I'd put this in here. Trainers are amazing. They can see a problem instantly and they can teach and dog and control her in the most amazing ways.

Yeah, you are right, I really don't even have to ask, I know what I gotta do, I just wanted to hear something like you guys are telling me because "there is wisdom in the multitude of counsel" and because I feel terrible to get rid of Snowdip, but, like you say John M., I would regret for the rest of my life if something happened to one of my kids, I am very grateful non of my little ones has really been hurt by the dog. I am taking her to the Haven tomorrow morning, that's the shelter we got her from. I called them and told them that she could do well with an assertive adult, at least an adult could defend himself or herself if she snaps, she is not a big dog... but I think they might still put her down when I tell them all that she has done.

My mama told me a similar story about a dog like mine and the one in your story that one day it grabbed ahold of it's master's toddler and wouldn't let the toddler go even though they were beating the dog with two by fours and stuff... yeah, no way! Alex Loya. My wife's cousin had a black lab puppy that displayed aggressive behaviour from time to time. She had plenty of warning signs but did nothing because the dog was thought to be docile. On a long car trip the dog attacked her son and literaly ripped off his face. It was horrible. Best act now before something happens which you will regret for the rest of your life. Besides, the dog looks insane. Tiene ojos de diablo. Good luck.

Anaceci, Lizzie is 7 pounds, but most of it is hair.

We have been told by several vets (and I've also read in several places) that pets should not be given tranquilizers because they may not react to them well while in flight (i.e., they call fall asleep perpetually!). I think small pets are particularily suceptible to the effects of the medicine. United Airlines says on their website that they recommend against it.

Laurie, speaking of dogs and traveling, this last holiday, tuve que convencer a Julia de dejar a Floppy, well to my astonishment, there were 8 dogs and 5 cats in line on the AA counter at the airport! I guess that 1- it was domestic flight 2- they are all very well trained y 3, half of them confessed to give them dramamine for a "peacefull, sleepy, motion sickness free trip". Alex L.: Do you really have to ask? No matter how small the puppy is, you've already seen agressive behavior towards all members of the family. In a situation like that (and I speak from first hand experience) no matter how much training is involved, the animal will have its own instincts (or mental deficiencies) and can (and is guaranteed) bite the hand that feeds it.

My recommendation, is to find an alternative than putting the animal down. Animal wranglers may be able to take the pup (as it is still young enough to train) or some other family (preferably without children) who can spend the time disciplining or guarding a farm or large plot of land (a junk/scrap yard for example <g>). In any case, GET CUJO OUT OF THE HOUSE as quickly as possible before you start paying for plastic surgery for your kids.

Hey Elena Rohweder! And/or anyone else who knows a lot about dogs! I need some emergency advice here about my dog. She is the cutest little mutt, and she is really good... a lot of the time. But when we first got her she was under the coffee table, I reached in to get her to put her in the kitchen to sleep, and she growled in anger and tried to bit me. I held her down and said "No!" and she never has done that to me again. One day I came home, and my wife told me she displayed that same behavior and bit my wife,braking the skin to where my wife bled a little bit. Then she bit my daughter Karaleigh in the ear, making one little puncture wound, then she got out and was running around like wild, and she began to growl at my son. Lil' Alex was crying terrified as Snowdip ran in circles around him. She would not stop even though I was telling her to stop and eventhough Alex was terrified. She kept running from me. The other day I told Alex (whom everyone else calls Connor)to put his bike in the yard. When he went in the yard, Snowdip started doing that again, I told her "No growling!" and she kept running in circles around Alex while he cried, then as I began to go their way, whe jumped up and bit him in the face, and I shouted "No Snowdip!" she made another circle around him and jumped up and bit him again in the face! She didn't brake the skin, and this time she didn't get away from me! She peed herself when she saw that I was right there,and then grabbed her by the neck and shook her like a dog mama, and then I kicked her, I was so angry I just left her alone lest I kill that dog right there! Alex was fine, but I saw her jump up and bit his face! Then I got home the other day and she had bit Karaleigh again in anger, she wouldn't let my daughter's hand go even though Karaleigh was crying, but she didn't brake the skin,although she left some teeth marks. And one time I came home and my wife told me that right before I walked in she had told my kids to go to the back of the house cause Snowdip was running around growling at them,scaring them and not listening to my wife. As soon as I walked in, Snowdip stopped her little fit.

Most of the time she is really good, affectionate, peaceful, a good, good dog, but then she snaps all of a sudden. So, I guess I know what I need to do, I feel terrible because I, we love the little dog, medium size, and if I bring her back to the shelter we got her from when she was a puppy, they are going to put her down. I just want to know, Elena, and anyone else who knows and loves dogs, what you think. She has never tried any of her little stunts with me since that first time long ago, so I think she would be ok with assertive adults, she senses my wife is scared when she acts like that and totally disrespects her, but assertive adults would do ok with her. But, what do you think, I can't take the risk, huh? My kids are still too little ( oh, and it turns out she had bit my little bit Carissa in the neck when she was a little bitty puppy and they were playing! I didn't know that till now!)Anyway, she is a good little dog most of the time, but I can't risk her really hurting one of my kids, huh? Heck, not even scaring them like she does at times by growling is acceptable! She's gotta go! But it breaks my heart! They are going to put her down. What do you thin? I look forward to your response. Hopefully tomorrow because I gotta get rid of her now. Thanks!

Sue, we did have our Lizzie on board with us under the seat. But she got very scared and started barking and we asked the stewardesses if we could put her carrier on our laps to comfort her. They refused. So Lizzie barked for 3 1/2 hrs under the seat and all the passangers got mad at us because we couldn't stop her. (how do I do that??!!). So basically I got into a shouting match with the stupid stewardesses, I grabbed the arm of an obnoxious passanger who was giving me ugly looks, and I made a complete nuisance of myself. My Mexican side can get really ugly.

Of course, the stewardesses blamed the FAA for not allowing us to hold Lizzie. So when I got home, I called the FAA and spoke with a cabin inspector and he said everything they told us was rubish. Basically, FAA cares only about takeoff and landing and that's when the dog has to be under the seat. During the seat, Lizzie is exactly like any other carry-on bag - which means she can come out during the flight.

Interestingly, during the same flight, the pilot had the seat belt light on because it was bumpy, but everyone was walking around. Bill asked if he could go to the restroom (because we were about to get arrested with my outburst so he didn't want to give them any more ammunition). The stewardess said, "Oh Sure".

Well, I told the FAA guy about that and THAT is a major violation by the airline. I wrote a letter to American and they were going to investigate the stewardesses actions (with regards to the seat belt light).

So Bill has vowed to never fly again with Lizzie and Cathy who arrives in June. We are about to get a really cute RV made by Airstream - it's like one of the old VW vans from the 60's only really elegant. Gas mileage is much better too.

Cofident they would receive valuable testimonials, the airline's publicity department sent out letters to all the wives of businessmen who used the special rates, asking how they enjoyed their trip.

The Stones were awesome Dominic, and as you said the best part of the game.

The Refs blew some calls, but the Steelers had some luck go there way too. I didn't think Seattle could get their running game going well enought to keep Pittsburgh's defense on the field long enought to tire them down. And Big Ben got his ring, even with a crappy performance. Cinci will have their shot at least twice next year on this Super Bowl XL champion team.

Hey Dwight, I'm glad you are finding my book interesting, history fascinates me! Studying history is like looking through a window in a time machine, and. as I mentioned in my book, it is fascinating to think that I was there in the loins of my fathers! The Penitas Loya are not my direct family, my father and grandfather and great grandfather and great great grandfather and all the way back to 1789 were from the town of San Elizario, Texas, 15 miles Eqast of El Paso. Penitas is down near the coast. I mentioned that family because they are key in discerning the path of migration of the Loya from Brazos Santiago on the coast of Texas and up the north bank of the Rio Grande to West Texas and into Chihuahua, and because they are key in discerning the arrival of the first Europeans to what is now the United States. I had been misled to believe they had come from Navarra, where I do have relatives, because the Garcia y Carraffa Encyclopedia had mentioned that the Loya had issued from the place of Loya in Navarre. As I did more research I found out that Garcia Carraffa was mistaken, his mention of that is probably due to the fact that all that area used to be part of the independent Kingdom of Navarre way back in the past, and to the geographical proximity of the place of the Loya to Navarre, the Loya Bay, I found, is actually in the province of Labourd in France within the city limits of the French border city of Hendaye, very close to Navarre, but not in Navarre, you can see in this link the location of the place of the legendary place of the Loya where the Loya issued from (And we also know this is the case because Gaztelu, as in Blas de Loya y Gaztelu who I mention in my book and whom Garcia Carraffa mentions in his book, actually, they the Garcia Carraffa brothers, mention in their encyclopedia, Gaztelu is located in that same map within Hendaye on the French side by that little bitty island, the Ile des Faisans, that is in the middle of the river Bidassoa, in the bottom of the map. So, fascinating, in Blas de Loya y Gaztelu's name are found the exact coordinates of the legendary place of the Loya in the map of course, the etymology of the word is Italic, but that's another story):

Anyway, that's why I focused on the Penitas Loya. As to their role in the American Revolution I simply mentioned that all Colonial Texans would have participated in one capacity or another in the American Revolution. Some would have been soldiers with the Galvez Louisiana Army, most would have been in the militia which was involved in fighting the Indian Wars in Texas which, as I have developed my postulation, were a direct fourth front in the American Revolution, and which claim is making me an authority of sorts in historical circles since no one has ever discerned this fact before. I am developing this postulation a bit more as I revise my book. In the case of the Loya family group they are unique in that because of the location of the place of the Loya in France so close to Spain, as you can see in the map and picture, some came to America to New York State and Vermont with the French with Samuel de Champlain and were established in historical towns like Ticonderoga, and some came with the Spaniards, my branch, to Texas from the very beginning of colonization, before, actually, the generally accepted period of colonization of Texas and through the coast of Texas rather than through Mexico. Consequently, there are Loya kinsmen listed in the lists of Patriots of the American Revolution both from the 13 Colonies, from Massachussetts actually, surely from the Vermont bunch, and from Texas.

As far as de Grasse, he himself said he could not proceed to Yorktown without Spanish money, the
French even then refused to give of their money for the campaign, which give me mixed emotions about finding where the place of the Loya is actually located, but consequently, the Yorktown campaign was fully funded by Spanish cash, $500,000 pesos of which came from New Spain including Texas. Besides this, the Spaniards fully participated in the Yorktown campaign by covering the back of the French while th eFrench fleet went to Yorktown.

Anyway, I would not put it that way, that we Americans turn on those who help us. Some Indians helped us, most helped the British, in fact, the Indian Wars in Texas were brutal at this time and they were directly related to the American Revolution, with the Indians knowingly taking the British side by fighting th eSpaniards in Texas and stealing cattle and horses meant to support the American cause. America is great because America is good, the moment America ceases tobe good she will cease being great.

Alex, I've read a couple of more chapters from your book. Good stuff amigo. I like the part where you found out about that unkown grave marker in Penitas and how it gives creedence and support to the theory that Spanish colonists or immigrants were in Texas far longer than history states. That's really cool about your grandfather, great grandfather and relatives that grew up in that small town. So, you really think that they had a large contribution to the American Revolution? Like you, I didn't read, learn, or ever hear about Spanish and Italian immigrants fighting to support the Revolution. Of course Spain wanted control of the new land and it was probably their standing up to England that contributed to the victory. Noteable was the efforts of men like de Grasse and how they accomplished so much. Natives also fought in support of Washington and against the British, so not all tribes were against us. Eventually we as Americans would even turn on those that helped us win the war. History is always neat to discuss. Your book is quite well written and I like your style that is vibrant and on topic, kinda like you were in high school. You always seemed to be somewhat passionate back then.

I missed seeing Danny White, although I do remember we were in High School when he visited AHS. Staubach, though, I saw, and you are right, we were in 6th grade, I have always remembered his visit, I suppose because he was one of my childhood heroes, like the song says, I was Roger Staubach in my back yard! I remember years ago I bumped into John Trombka at the supermarket in Gretna, Louisiana (I also bumped into John Sours and Laura Fitch, she was actually in my class, at San Antonio College, I bumped into Tom Frungillo at a party in Greensboro, North Carolina, I bumped into Mike Meehan at the Northstar Mall in San Antonio, I heard of Neil Shusterman from my step son Keenan, I heard Coach Everest on the radio in New Orleans, I saw our resident brain surgeon, I can't believe I can't remember his name! practical joker, good guy... first name Billy... I can see his face though, I saw him on a billboard in Houston, I saw Roy Blom as a reporter on the Spanish channel in Texas and I saw Lee Ramirez being interviewed by CNN when he worked for the IRS... all this from our little bitty community at the AHS! What are the chances?!... Billy Gormley! I saw him on a billboard in Houston!)

hi John, I'm still around and reading, but not posting.

I'm still travelling like crazy - just returned from a 24 hr trip to Dallas to help my Mom close on a new house. She's moving closer to my sister and she needed some help with the legal stuff. Plus, I had to baby sit for my two new sisters (2 adorable maltese pups).

We also had to deal with my Mother in law's death on the 15th of this month. She had a really rough December and January and she finally died a couple of weeks ago. I had to return to this area for the funeral (between her death and burial I ran down to Texas). So I'm pooped. But I think things will calm down. Poor Bill was going to see her at least once a week, and that was hard on him too.

Career? Hm, it's more like the job I'm holding onto while the rest of my life moves at the speed of light. That's OK too but I'm hoping to really settle back down there as well. It's hard to get so much done in one day. Phew!

To make matters worse (or better) we are looking into buying an RV of some sort. I think we are settling on something we can pull (rather than the big bus-like things). Bill hated the way the American Airlines treated our pup on our last flight and he refuses to fly again - so now we'll be driving.

Since I've always wanted to see the western part of the US, we may well roll by someday soon. I'll let you know (so you can get the grill ready!!).

I remember Roger Staubach when he came to the school and how everyone was walking fast next to him as he walked up the ramp to the high school building signing autographs, he was wearing a white short sleeve collar shirt and tan pants, I think slacks and tan loafer looking shoes, I think. I also remember he spoke at that outdoor stage between the gym and the elementary school building where the pet show used to take place... but I don't remember what the speech was about... heck I don't hardly remember what the pastor preached at the chapel this morning!

Alex McG: I don't remember Staubach ever giving a speech at AHS, but I do remember when Danny White came down for the sports awards and gave a speech then and presented the letters to everyone. It was fun to have a celebrity, and I don't remember much of what he said (proabably the same stuff you always say to students -- stay in school, stay away from drugs, and be active in sports as it promotes a healthy lifestyle -- yeah, right).

Dominic: It has been many a long and dry Spring Break/Superbowl without the Cowboys. Maybe two more years under Purcell and they'll get it.

Going back a few months, today I saw on the History channel a thing on Lennon and how the Nixon's government did all it could to set him up so they could deport him before the elections. One of the CIA agents said it was ridiculous how much emphasis there was on nailing him and how the Nixon administration was ultra-paraniod. Kindda like these days.

I'm torn on this Super Bowl as I have followed Ben Roethlisberger since 2001 when he was Miami's quarterback. That's Miami, Ohio (my alma matter) and yes Miami University was founded in 1809, 116 years before the University of Miami, FL was founded. I remember telling my buddies over some beers at the Cinci/Miami rivalry game that Ben would make one hell of an NFL QB someday. But, I as Dominic and others cannot stomach the Squeelers, especially after the Bengals loss. For those that don't remember my Bungals beat the Squeelers handily in Pittsburgh, should have won in our house, and would've clobbered them if it wasn't for Von OAFfenhoffen's cheap shot!

So, for the sake of the AFC North, interesting speculation of what could have been, and John Maroney being a Steeler fan, I do have Iron Boy tendencies. But I'm going to have set that aside and pull for SeahawksXL. One, because I think they have more talent, two, because they've never been to a Super Bowl, and three, Shawn Alexander is a local hero in Cinci town. He played high school football in Boone Co., KY just across the river :)

Army Chaplain Alex Loya, please forgive me for I have sinned :) Joking aside, that is a high responsiblity and honor to serve as an Army Chaplain these days. I can only guess at the stories and discussions you have in the house of God with our troops. They need every bit of help and assistance our government and society can give.

Back to my feelings about the Iraq War....
The sad thing to me is how the war hawks could not forsee or prepare for this war properly. Did they seriously think the smaller and faster was the cheaper or better approach? I guess they try and gather comfort by blaming Clinton for everything. Seems to me that back then the Powell doctrine was the method of choice for conducting war. No wonder Powell didn't survive the neocons and war hawks. They were all about doing it on the cheap, while maximumizing private sector profits. Do you really think Blackwater security employees should be making a grand a day while our soldiers and reservists barely make that in a month?

To bad Cheneyburton passed on contributing to the Fallen Heroes memorial hospital for injured soldiers. I guess the most profitable group from this war could care less about the health of our soldiers. Speaking of health of our troops, doesn't it shock you learning about the untreated water at Camp Junction City in Ramadi? Twice the contamination level of the Euphrates River. Doesn't surprise me that they tried to keep it hush hush, but why are the Republicans trying to snuff the Democrats in the House and Senate for bringing it up. They should be even more concerned!

Dominic, that's a very good one! I like it! I would crack it from the pulpit if I could tell a joke, but, like I said before, in Bible College they all used to make jokes about how I can't tell a joke! But, I am laughing buddy, that's a good one!

John M. well... without getting into a lot of detail, my job is, bottom line, to asses the sincerity and depth of his conviction to become a conscientious objector. Without getting into more detail, he was telling me about his horrible combat experiences in Afghanistan the whole time sitting at an angle from me where I could see the whole time his right shoulder where the American flag is on our uniforms. That is also where the combat or expeditionary patch goes over the flag on the uniforms of the soldiers that have been in Iraq or Afghanistan... to make a long story short and without a lot of detail, he is telling me all this, and he does not have a combat patch over his American flag! So, I made an assesment... I am recommending that he be given an extended leave just to rest and be refreshed because I do believe he is very tired of the military life. Anyway, maybe he ought to come and hear me preach... and get some sleep... Dwight... very funny... :)

There is an athiest who is walking out in the woods thinking evolution caused all of the beauty of the forest. Well along comes this 7 foot tall grizzley bear. The athiest turned around and saw the grizzly and screamed a bloodcurdling scream and runs up the hill. Then the grizzly starts chasing and closing in on him. Dale, I agree, online and internet media will put the hurt on the Block Busters and Hollywood Videos. Don't count the satellite and cable companies out of the picture. With the on demand and streaming technologies they'll also see big profits in 2006. Last year the online music sales tripled from 2004 to 1.1 billion.

Oh, one final note on the movie download issue...I don't use NetFlix, BlockBuster, or any other paid media distribution outlet. I use the local library. They have a huge selection of DVDs and videos available for check-out and often have current releases (though I might have to wait a while before they actually get those in). I can reserve them, keep them for a week at a time, renew for another week if they are not on hold, and if I forget to turn it in on time, the late fees are the same as for the books, $.10/day. I highly recommend it to everyone (okay, shameless plug to support your local library).

Dwight: Great, LENGTHY, article you posted on the trials and tribulations in Mass. I still don't understand how an IT department can be dominated by a vendor, but as is suggested, graft and corruption runs high in all areas of government. I'm not really keen on Microsoft's play, because it does interfere with a free market economy. I do, however, continue to enjoy and use their products as a productivity tool. But then again, I haven't had the need to pay for any productivity software tools since 1989 <g> which allows me to maintain a non-biased approach. I just hunt for the right tool to get the job done.

Now don't misunderstand me though, I am still appauled (sp?) about the Abramoff issue. This has affected both parties in Congress, though there seems to be a larger percentage of those on the "wrong" side <g>.

Okay, so the guy with the headphones is Kevin Chubb, but who's the toasted lanky guy next to him???

Dominic: It does look like the Steelers are the underdog this weekend. But then again, based on history, the Bronco's tend to choke at this stage in the game. However, the Steeler's will have to resort to their play strategy they employed against the Bengals in order to win. I'm wondering how Plummer is going to deal with the pain they may inflict on him...

I'm keeping track of all of the predictions so far, but keep them coming.

Dale: Your prediction (and hillarious links you submitted along with it) is a tough one. NetFlix appeals to the common element of immediate gratification. Even though on-line movies are becoming more popular, paying and waiting for the download is still not an advantage over getting the movies in the mail and plopping it into the DVD player whenever I want. Also, folks still aren't hooking up their computers to their big screen TV's to watch movies in bed yet...though it is getting close. I'm going to keep an eye on this one...

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity. But one hundred years later, we must face the tragic fact that the Negro is still not free.

One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land.

So we have come here today to dramatize an appalling condition. In a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir.

This note was a promise that all men would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check which has come back marked "insufficient funds." But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation.

So we have come to cash this check -- a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice. We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all of God's children. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.

It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment and to underestimate the determination of the Negro. This sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights.

The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges. But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.

We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. we must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.

The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny and their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom.

We cannot walk alone. And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall march ahead. We cannot turn back. There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, "When will you be satisfied?" we can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one. We can never be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.

I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow cells. Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality. You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive.

Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair. I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal." I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state, sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today.

I have a dream that one day the state of Alabama, whose governor's lips are presently dripping with the words of interposition and nullification, will be transformed into a situation where little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls and walk together as sisters and brothers. I have a dream today. I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together. This is our hope. This is the faith with which I return to the South. With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.

This will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with a new meaning, "My country, 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim's pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring." And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true. So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania! Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado! Let freedom ring from the curvaceous peaks of California! But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia! Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee! Let freedom ring from every hill and every molehill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring.

When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"

As for football, I have to agree que despues de que nos quedamos todo el fin de semana viendo partidos de equipos que no mas no se me dan, fueron muy buenos juegos especialmente el de los colts y pittsburg, cardiaco. I really wasn't rooting for anybody in particular but then I heard that the coach's son had recently commited suicide? and that no. 25's wife had stabbed him earlier that day? Que honda? Crazy world!

Not to pick on cats, but still, pretty funny.

My prediction for this year: online (legal, paid) movie downloading (e.g. http://www.cinemanow.com) seriously challenges both Netflix (sends you DVD's by mail) and bricks-and-mortar video rental stores like Blockbuster.
