Thanks everyone. I had a great time. Oh, I
forgot to take pictures of all the fish being cooked and eaten, but
that would've just made everyone drool and yearn for being there even
more :) If any of you ever want to take a trip up North, get fed
three square meals a day, fish, relax and enjoy the great Canadian
wilderness, then I highly recommend this place: http://www.whippoorwilllodge.com

John. Thanks. We are proud. I really do not
know where he gets his athletic ability. Certainly not from his old
man. He is nothing short of amazing in all sports. Luckily he inherited
his mother's brains. He is a well rounded little guy. Does anyone
have an 1979 Anauhac? I played JV football and would love to have a
team picture to show my son. Perhaps someone could scan it?

Dresden Summer Soccer League Results. Richkote
5 Crows Construction 0. Three goals scored by Barrett Emerson
Reid-Maroney. That makes nine goals in four games. He can't wait until
the under 20 World Cup comes to this area. Dwight. Nice fish. We
have a creek that runs acroos the farm. We get good sized pike swimming
by all the time. However, they are nasty little fishies.

John M, I was up on the Pickerel River last week which is considered north central Ontario, about 45 miles southwest of Sudbury.
Missed the Mexico-US match, but I heard the US came from behind which is unusual.
John B., I love number 10 :)
Dominic,
I told Alex a while back that he better be careful with that Bible in
his hands. It's one of the most lethal weapons known to mankind.
Alex,
Iraq didn't attack us on 9/11. That was masterminded by someone who
took advantage of the Saudi oil dollars and the billions the CIA spent
on arms and ammunition building up the mujahideen to fight the Soviets.
The nutjobs over there want you on their soil so they can justify
killing and blowing up the place. The longer we're over in that hell
hole, the longer the Iraqis will be dependent on our support. It's
kinda like welfare. They're not going to stand up to do anything as
long as we're doing everything for them. Your job over there is not to
kill, but to support the troops and families of those who are killed by
the nutjobs. That is quite a responsibility and honorable job for our
country. I wish you the best man.
Elena, last year I saw several
of those pink striped BMWs driving around on River Rd. outside of
Cincinnati. I tried to drive as fast as a couple of them in my tuned up
Neon, but got my doors blown away :)

Ann: You're mose welcome.
Dominic, et.al.:
Intersting match yesterday. For a while there I thought Mexico would
tie it up. I can't believe I actually watched a soccer match on TV, my
first in 15 years. I watched for two reasons, I can't believe the US is
actually good enough to make it in <chuckle> and to understand
what the hoopla around possible anti-american sentiment during the
match. Didn't see any, unless just wasn't covered...
Anyway, I
had forgotten how painful it is to watch a match completely sober and
without a gang of aficionados. Granted, I wasn't rooting for either
team (how does one pick sides at the last minute?) but I was hoping for
more scoring. A couple of times there I thought Mexico had it in the
bag and likewise the US. Nothing controversial occurred, a couple of
fouls here and there, but nothing to write home about. I cannot say
that Mexico or the US played badly because I hadn't kept up. However,
after a while, I mixed a great Margarita and, well, it didn't matter in
the end. Lot's of ticket tape being spread around and apparently the US
one by one goal. Yippee!

Did anyone watch the Mexico - USA match? Where
is Alacran Jimenez when you need him? Probably hanging out with
Mantequilla Napoles. Dominic. About an hour from the farm there is
a real Taco place run by a Mexicano. It is in a place called Leamington
where 7000 migrant Mexican workers call home for 8 months. Next time
you are in the area I can offer you something better than this awful
Canadian slop. There are carnitas, barbacoa, chiles rellenos, etc. etc.
Lots of Corona too.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Ann, thank you! You always make me feel like a real man! :) George, drop and give me 20 jarhead! :) My buddy Dwight! Hey man! Captain is better than Lieutenant! I hope I've been of service to Paul! John,
I am getting deployed to Iraq in November, if nothing changes I will be
there from November 07 through February 09... too long, man!... But a
man's gotta do what a man's gotta do, and I will be happy to go
confront the Islamic hordes, look them in the eye and let them know
that they can not attack my country and my people and my friends and
not get their butts kicked all over the parking lot!... Every time I
remember the World Trade Center in flames and crumbling, the sight of
American civilians jumping to their deaths from 80 stories high because
their other choice was to burn to death, New York City covered in
smoke, the beautiful face of America marred by their cowardly attack, I
feel my eyes tear up and harden at the same time, my lips tighten, my
jaw and fists clench and my heart pulling me into the battlefield where
the command "fix bayonets!" will be the pleasant sound of my country
asserting herself in the face of those who have no respect for her!...
And I am very happy I have a chance to go... The movers came
today to pack our stuff, and tomorrow they come to move all of our
household goods to Fort Polk, Louisiana, my home, we move on the 29th,
not this Friday but next, and I will be in Fort Polk on 2 July. In
August I have a Mission Readiness Exercise and in November we go... I
just pray not that we don't deploy, but that they shorten the
deployments, and that the Lord lets me live until my children are
grown. Anyway, I got my book listed among the "best" Cajun and
Acadian historical sites! I didn't approach them, they emailed me and
told me they had added me to their listing, check it out, just scroll
down a little bit and you will see my link second down the list: http://www.acadian.org/linkmachine/links/l...logy-related_3.html

Dwight, will do! Can you post a link to the Class of 82? My email
is alexloya@integrity.com, I will be happy to talk to Paul about New
Orleans. Dwight, I went diggin' and found the Class of 82 chat and left
Freud a message.
Ann, I am sorry to hear about your son! Bummer!
My oldest daughter, Kirsten, was hit by a car and had a compound
fracture on her leg, she also had to have a metal bar screwed to her
leg for a couple of months, it was a nightmare! And my middle daughter,
Karaleigh. who is six years old fractured her shoulder just today! She
was right outside on our porch riding her little kid bike when she
fell. I remember something kind of weird that happened, I "felt" in my
heart that something had happened to one of my kids, like a "click" in
my heart, and sure enough, she fractured her shoulder. All she need is
a sling though, the doctor said her bones being yet soft kept the
fracture from being worse. Sorry about your son, I will pray for a
quick and full recovery. Hey Ann, when you see Caroline Kurtz, say hi
to her for me, will you?
Anyway, just in case you all didn't
notice I got promoted to Captain! Finally! After two years! All the
guys a graduated from the Chaplain Officer school were promoted after
about 4 months from the time we graduated, here it took almost two
years to promote me. That's because they were in the Active Component
and though I have been on Active Duty since I joined up again, I was in
the Reserve Component, so, for almost two years I had to walk humbly as
a Lieutenant, I mean, like when we moved into our officer housing area
I asked my wife what rank she thought our neighbor was, and she said,
"I don't know honey, but whatever he is, he is higher than you!". And
it is just like the Lord to do this, I was able to get back in the
Military 9 days before I was to old to join even with my prior service,
then I was able to submit my packet for the Active Component, just
before I was getting to old to do so, and here I am being promoted to
Captain within the Reserve when I am already halfway checked out of the
Reserve, literally! That is great because when I make the transition
into the Active Component on 3 July, that would have been my date of
rank as a Captain in the Active Component, but being promoted while
still in the Reserve, even if I am half way out, my date of rank is 23
January of this year, which will make a difference when I am promoted
to Major, and which means they will pay me 5 months of back pay in one
check, that's Disneyworld right there!
Anyway, and it is just
like the Lord, when I became a First Lieutenant back in Chaplain School
at Fort Jackson, Fort Jackson being a training fort, there were a bunch
of young Privates going to boot camp, which means they had to salute
us, well, when my wife came to see me there, and my kids, I took them
to the mini mall kind of hoping that we would bump into some Privates
so that my kids and my wife could see them salute me, well, when we got
there, instead of bumping into Privates, we bumped into Captains, and I
had to salute them! And today, when I first pinned on Captain, I went
to the Soldier Support Center to get my pay and ID adjusted, and guess
who is the first Soldier I come across? A Major! So, again, I had to
salute him! That's just like the Lord! Dealing with that old pride!
Anyway, I am very happy to finally be promoted!

Elena and Cindy: You go girls! :-)
My
saga continues: Monday night Stephen was standing with his walker,
reached up to scratch his nose and push his glasses up, and fell back!
He broke his wrist! Once I realized he hadn't fallen on the broken leg
I was relieved ten-fold. John took him to the emergency room and they
sent him home with an ace bandage -- it was only sprained. Tues. p.m.
the ER calls and informs me the x-rays had been re-read (by a "real"
radiologist -- apparently they leave at 5pm) and sure enough it's
broken. I don't understand why a physician didn't read the x-rays mon.
p.m. Okay, how much worse can it get. I have just been laughing about
all this. What else can we do?? Stephen is not amused. He had his first
post-op appointment yesterday (the x-ray of his femur is quite
impresive) and we were to see his surgeon's assistant. He was a bit
confused at first -- looking at a file regarding a femur, looking at
x-rays of a wrist! Just when Stephen was getting really good with the
walker and we could actually venture out in public, we are back to the
wheelchair 100%. Poor kid. Now we are keeping are chins up and our
sense of humor in check.
Hope all of you are having an enjoyable summer!

Ok Bears, I need your help. Capital One just
did a big re-org and eliminated many senior roles, including mine. So,
after 5 years here in communications and marketing, I'm now on the job
hunt. The environment in the company had not been going in the right
direction, so even though it is never fun to get the news, I have no
doubt it is so I find something that better uses my talents and is more
fun. I was assured it was not due to performance, but rather that they
are going to try to execute the advertising and PR plans I worked on
and sold into management over the last year via the junior staffers
(who look like deer in headlights and have said they have no idea how
to do my stuff) Should be interesting to see how that plays out.
I
need to polish up the resume and get it out. If you know of any
companies or recruiters, send me a note at elena.turner@att.net.

Now this is a very sad news article!!!! Ethanol boom may fuel shortage of tequila Mexican farmers burning agave fields and replanting them with corn Reuters Updated: 8:16 p.m. ET May 29, 2007 MEXICO
CITY - Mexican farmers are setting ablaze fields of blue agave, the
cactus-like plant used to make the fiery spirit tequila, and resowing
the land with corn as soaring U.S. ethanol demand pushes up prices. The
switch to corn will contribute to an expected scarcity of agave in
coming years, with officials predicting that farmers will plant between
25 percent and 35 percent less agave this year to turn the land over to
corn. "Those growers are going after what pays best now," said
Ismael Vicente Ramirez, head of agriculture at Mexico's Tequila
Regulatory Council. The large, spiky-leaved agave thrives on
high, arid land and can take eight years to reach maturity. To remove
the plants, growers cut them at their stems and often burn the fields
to remove the roots. Tequila, drunk in shots and cocktails around the world, is named after a town in the western Mexican state of Jalisco. Production
of agave, from the lily family, soared in recent years as farmers
cashed in on record prices brought about by a shortage of the plant at
the start of the decade. Despite rapid growth in tequila
drinking, especially overseas, the over-supply of agave has driven
prices for the plant to rock-bottom levels. Many growers have
started to abandon the crop in favor of corn, whose price has rocketed
in line with massive growth in U.S. demand for ethanol after President
Bush outlined targets last year to use the corn-based fuel as a
gasoline alternative. Agave supply is also being hit this year
by disease in the fields, partly due to farmers caring less for the
plants after prices dropped. "The problem that we are going to
see, perhaps by mid-2008, is that a lot of agave is sick," Agriculture
Ministry official Arnulfo del Toro said. "That will have to be taken
out and production is going to drop a lot." Copyright 2007

Weekly Funny:
Married In Heaven On
their way to get married, a young couple are involved in a fatal car
accident. The couple find themselves sitting outside the Pearly Gates
waiting for St. Peter to process them into Heaven. While waiting, they
begin to wonder: Could they possibly get married in Heaven? When St.
Peter shows up, they asked him. St. Peter says, "I don't know. This is
the first time anyone has asked. Let me go find out," and he leaves. The
couple sat and waited for an answer. . .for a couple of months. While
they waited, they discussed that IF they were allowed to get married in
Heaven, SHOULD they get married, what with the eternal aspect of it all. "What if it doesn't work?" they wondered, "Are we stuck together FOREVER?" After
yet another month, St. Peter finally returns, looking somewhat
bedraggled. "Yes," he informs the couple, "you CAN get married in
Heaven." "Great!" said the couple, "But we were just wondering, what if things don't work out? Could we also get a divorce in Heaven?" St. Peter, red-faced with anger, slams his clipboard onto the ground. "What's wrong?" asked the frightened couple. "OH,
COME ON!!" St. Peter shouts, "It took me three months to find a priest
up here! Do you have ANY idea how long it'll take me to find a lawyer?

Okay. Got Stephen home sat. afternoon. He had
to stay an extra day due to a reaction to the pain meds. It is great to
have him home, although it's like having an adult infant. Once the
swelling lessens in the knee he'll be a little more mobile. He's
currently using a walker and wheelchair. We can only take it one day at
a time.
Now, when you think you have it bad, it really puts "it"
into perspective being in a children's hospital. Oh poor us with a kid
with a broken leg. There are children there who've never been able to
leave the hospital. Sat. a.m. while we were waiting on our discharge
papers we ran into a girl and her dad. Mary attends school with
Stephen. Because we were on the surgery floor I asked what she had
done. The father informed me she has cancer. I knew there was a cancer
student at his school but didn't know this was her. In any case, Mary
is now cancer free and hopefully won't be returning to the hospital.
Yeah!
I truly thank my blessings for having two healthy children!

Dwight. I was wearing regular shorts over the
spandex just in case the belugas decided to breach. How often do you
get to mountain bike? We have no mountains but we live in beautiful
farmland that is peppered with rivers, creeks, and carolinian forests.
I have a regular 10 kilometer route that takes me past eagles nests,
deer trails, and coyote dens. It is very cool. I try to go every day.
There is a golden eagle that hangs out at the same abandoned farmhouse.
It is quite a departure from Mexico City.

Just to be clear I was not a card carrying member of the pod of

effectively enough. We were dragging dead weight at the finish line.

John B., yes I don't think US pro fans,
owners or teams would put up with restrictions like that, but I think
training at altitude or under hypoxic conditions gives athletes an
advantage. If futbol teams don't like it, then they need to train
appropriately. Lance Armstrong always trained in the mountains so he
could kick French butt in the Alps.
John M., that is
quite a funny, ironic and inspiring that a bunch of old, out of shape,
cholesterol laden Canucks got together to raise money for the Heart and
Stroke Foundation of Ontario :) I would love to see photos of that
large 26 passenger bike! I think I'll be pedaling in the Ride
Cincinnati for breast cancer research in June. Not so hip on the pink
helmet covers but it should be fun.
Ann, your son sounds
like a typical boy, testing gravity at every opportunity. Don't worry,
he'll be a man before long and you won't be able to lock him up
anywhere :)
Anacecilia, I hope your daughter's wrist
heals up fine. I remember when my daughters were first starting out

Thanks for all your kind words regarding
Stephen. We had him up out of bed 3 times today. Yeah! It is definitely
going to be a loooong summer. He is currently using a walker, and it is
definitely slow going. He should be discharged from the hospital
tomorrow. It'll be great to have him home. Hopefully, in the next 2-3
weeks he will be at an almost normal pace. I can only hope.
Anacecilia: Sorry to hear about your daughter's wrist. Aren't you the lucky one?!
Well,
Stephen was bound to have something happen this summer. About 3 years
ago he broke his collar bone, 2 yrs. ago he broke his thumb on the last
day of football camp, and last summer he was getting over mono! I
suppose I shouldn't be too surprised we had another injury this year.
Next year, once school is out, I'm locking that boy in a closet!
John M: That bike riding really sounds crazy -- how fun! I'd love to witness that. So, how many french fries did you eat?
Now, after all this, Elena, I hope you are having fun in Alaska.

Saludos. Just finished a Ride for the Heart
and Stroke Foundation 0f Ontario. It was an event featuring a large
bike that seats 26 riders. The object was to ride around the track once
bidding for the fastest time. There were dozens of teams raising money.
Sounds harmless enough. Add in high temperatures and incredible
humidity. Factor in that my crew was composed of a pod of belugas who
had not ridden a bike since grade school. Final result. The local
paramedics were left to pick up the pieces.Did I mention that they were
serving deep fried french fries at this event. Funds raised are to be
used in preventing strokes and heart attacks. Que pachecos. Ann. Sorry to hear about your son.

Dwight:
I agree with Dominic, that ruling does suck. Can you imagine if they
did that with football or baseball. Though Colorado is only at 5280
feet, they have bad snow storms during the winter (along with New
England cities as well) and other locales have nasty mosquitos that
affect ball games. Just doesn't make sense...

Ann, that's terrible! Hopefully Stephen's
femur heals well and he's able to get back on those skates again. At
least it wasn't a knee or ankle which could be even worse long term.
Dominic, what do you think of this new rule from FIFA:
Bolivia: FIFA altitude ban discriminates against Andean nations By Dan Keane, Associated Press Writer
LA
PAZ, Bolivia — Bolivia President Evo Morales says FIFA's decision to
ban all international soccer matches above 8,200 feet discriminates
against Latin America's high-altitude nations.
FIFA's ruling on
Sunday drew outrage from fans, soccer officials, and governments across
Latin America, and Morales said on Monday he will fight the decision.
The
Andean Community of Nations - including Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, and
Colombia, each with cities above the limit - sent FIFA president Joseph
Blatter a letter Monday calling for the ruling to be overturned.
Morales,
an avid soccer player, called for people in Bolivia's highlands to play
soccer in the streets on Wednesday in a mass demonstration of
high-altitude sport.
"This is not only a ruling against Bolivia,
but against the universality of sport," Morales said following an
emergency Cabinet meeting at the presidential palace in La Paz, 11,800
feet above sea level.
FIFA cited a concern for players' health
and home-field advantage of high-altitude teams over their visiting
lowland rivals. But Morales discounted such fears, saying the
challenges of playing at altitude were simply part of the world's game.
"He who wins at altitude, wins with dignity," Morales said. "He who fears altitude has no dignity."
The
ruling eliminates international games in La Paz and other major
Bolivian cities and the Colombian capital of Bogota, the Ecuadorean
capital Quito and the Peruvian city of Cuzco.
Most of Mexico
City falls under the limit at 7,200 feet but Toluca - Mexico's most
successful club in recent years - is above the limit.
Toluca press chief Mauricio Garduno said extreme heat and cold also create an advantage for some home teams.
"When
you play a match at 104 degrees, that's what affects players the most,"
Garduno said. "Altitude is not that important. If FIFA is going to
consider that, it should consider other things, too."
The FIFA
decision follows a Copa Libertadores match in February between
Brazilian club Flamengo and Bolivia's Real Potosi, which was played in
freezing rain at 13,120 feet.
The Brazilian players, who train
at sea level in Rio de Janeiro, took oxygen during the game and
eventually drew 2-2. But officials of the influential club vowed never
again to play at such high altitude, complaining of "unsporting and
inhumane" conditions.
"We didn't have the luck to be born
anywhere else. We have to play sports wherever we are," said Ruben
Cuenca, 45, a pastry seller on the streets of La Paz. "If not, where
would we go to play, the beach? And play soccer with the crabs?"

Happy Summer Break! I had the best of
intentions to see Carolyn Kurtz jam out this thursday night. But
alas.....yesterday, Stephen, our 14 year old, was in-line skating (at a
rink - wooden surface) and broke his femur! Yikes! Had a steel rod
implanted during 3 1/2 hours of surgery today. Thankfully everthing
went well. We are hoping to have him "up" tomorrow. He won't be able to
put any pressure on that leg for 6-8 weeks. He's a trouper and
hopefully we will get through this with some semblance of ease.
Hope you are well. For all of us D/FW'ers, I say it's time for another mini-reunion!

De nada, and just for laughs !
POSITION: MOM JOB DESCRIPTION: Long
term team players needed for challenging permanent work in an often
chaotic environment. Candidates must possess excellent communication
and organizational skills and be willing to work variable hours, which
will include evenings and weekends and frequent 24 hour shifts on call. RESPONSIBILITIES: For the rest of your life. Must be willing to be hated, at least temporarily, until someone needs $5. Must
be willing tobite tongue repeatedly. Also, must possess the physical
stamina of a pack mule and be able to go from zero to 60 mph in three
seconds flat in case, this time, the screams are not someone just
crying wolf. Must be willing to face stimulating technical
challenges, such as small gadget repair, mysteriously sluggish toilets
and stuck zippers. Must screen phone calls, maintain calendars and
coordinate production of multiple homework projects. Must have ability to plan and organize social gatherings for clients of all ages and mental outlooks. Must be willing to be indispensable one minute, an embarrassment the next. Must handle assembly and product safety testing of a half million cheap, plastic toys and battery operated devices. Must always hope for the best but be prepared for the worst. Must assume final, complete accountability for the quality of the end product. Responsibilities also include floor maintenance and janitorial work throughout the facility. POSSIBILITY FOR ADVANCEMENT AND PROMOTION: Virtually none. Your
job is to remain in the same position for years, without complaining,
constantly retraining and updating your skills, so that those in your
charge can ultimately surpass you. PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE: None required, unfortunately. On-the-job training offered on a continually exhausting basis. WAGES AND COMPENSATION: You pay THEM, offering frequent raises and bonuses. A balloon payment is due when they turn 18 because of the assumption that college will help them become financially independent. When you die, you give them whatever is left. The oddest thing about this reverse-salary scheme is that you actually enjoy it and wish you could only do more.

John, No worries on the response. I am glad,
however, that you included some Latin artists as we all got reprimanded
on the 80's group for not doing so. Nice Ipod by the way. I guess that
type of Ipod evokes it own kind of music.

Rafael: First off, Welcome to our Chat! Sorry I haven't responded yet.
Hmmm,
what songs evoke a memory? When it comes to AHS, almost anything from
Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Lynnrd Skynnrd, Queen, Eagles, Kansas,
Yes, and The Who. These are the sounds I remember listening to down the
halls, in the smoking lounge, and basically in and around the campus. I
started listening to The Beatles, but really didn't get into it until
after AHS.
Prior to AHS (I only attended from 8th grade through
12th), it is completely different. I've got Juan Gabriel, Sergio
Mendez, Herp Albert and the Tijuana Brass, Mocedadez, and many other
artists that basically took some classical english songs and converted
them to spanish (e.g. "El Ultimo Beso" which was one of my favorites
back in '73 or '74).
I rarely ever hear those anymore, but when
one or another does slip in during my channel surfing, I stop and
listen and it does evoke both an emotional and physical responses.
I haven't purchased an I-Pod yet. I am growing some though...

Dominic, that will be an interesting change
not hearing all the Black Sabbath songs. I just checked and tickets are
still available for the show. I will avoid the TicketShafter surcharge,
ride my bike downtown during lunch on Friday to the US Bank Arena, and
buy my ticket at the box office. Rock 'n Roll is my religion and a
meager tithe of $29.50 is well worth it to hear the spiritual sermons
from ROCK GODS Iommi and Butler. I've seen Megadeth twice before and
they rock out hard.

Ralph/Maroney/ Dwight: Talk about memories. Caught
the Black Sabbath show last night with Ronnie James Dio on vocals,
KICKED ASS! They basically played all of the Heaven & Hell and Mob
Rules albums. Brought back memories of my ghetto blaster playing
Sabbath, AC/DC , Judas Priest etc etc at the smoking lounge while
drinking tequila and sprite. We would get to school early in the
morning and bury the bottles in the dirt. At lunch time we would funnel
out the tequila through a hose we stole from the chemistry lab. They sold donuts through the art room window and we would dip them in out drinks while listening to some good old Rock n' Roll.

Ann, that was hilarious, I am going to have to
copy it and send it to my soldiers LOL... of course, I will have to
edit it and write "kick me in the butt", you know, since I'm the
Chaplain and all... LOL
Pominic, that little math game blew my mind! I'm going to have to show it to my wife! Fantastic!
John,
I gues you were asking me if I am still stateside. Yes, I am still at
Fort Bragg. I received REFRAD orders yesterday, that is, Release from
Active Duty ending my present set of orders on July 2, and, I received
another set of orders to be signed up in the Active Component of the
Army on July 3, at Fort Polk, Louisiana, so I won't have a break on
active duty, which is great for my career and eventual retirement.
Confirmed,
I am assigned to the 4th Brigade, 10th Moutain Division, I will be with
them July 3. In August we have an MRE,Mission Readiness Exercize, the
deployment was postponed till November and it will not be to
Afghanistan where the 10th has been thus far deployed, it will be to
Iraq. The bummer is that they extended the deployment to 15 months... I
am grieved about that for my family and for my soldiers and their
families, 15 months is too long to keep a soldier away from his family
at a time. I look forward to being deployed to the combat zone with my
American soldiers, but I dread being away from my littles for such a
long time. I am praying that the Lord who rules in the affairs of man
will move the hearts of those in leadership to shorten the deployment
time, and I am confident that if it is His will, He will do so, and we
will not be deployed for such a long time. If His answer is no, then I
will know that it is His will, and that will give me peace and help me
get through that extended time away being confident that He will work
it together for good for my family and myself, and the families of
those among my soldiers who trust in Him.
Anyway, it is a good
thing I will be deploying from Louisiana because that is home and we
have family, friends and church family that will be a great support and
encouragement to my wife and children.
Anyway, so, yes I am
still here and will be until November unless something changes, I hope
in the Lord that the length of the deployment does change, but if it
does not, well, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do!

Received a funny today and thought I'd share:
Katie
Couric, Charlie Gibson, Brian Williams and a tough old US Marine
Sergeant were captured by terrorists in Iraq. The leader of the
terrorists told them he's grant each of them one last request before
they were beheaded.
Katie Couric said, "Well, Im a Southerner,
so I'd like one last plate of fried chicken." The leader nodded to an
underling who left and returned with the chicken. Couric ate it all and
said, "Now I can die content."
Charlie Gibson said, "I'm living
in New York, so I'd like to hear the song "The Moon and New York City"
one last time." The terrorist's leader nodded to another terrorist who
had studied the Western world and knew the music. He returned with some
rag-tag musicians and played the song. Gibson was satisfied.
Brian
Williams said, "I'm a reporter to the end. I want to take out my tape
recorder and describe the scene here and what's about to heppan. Maybe,
someday, someone will hear it and know that I was on the job 'til the
end." The leader directed an aide to hand over the tape recorder and
Williams dictated his comments. He then said, "Now I can die happy."
The
leader turned and said, "And now, Mr. U.S. Marine, what is your final
wish?" "Kick me in the ass," said the Marine. "What?" asked the leader?
"Will you mock us in your last hour?" "No, I'm NOT kidding. I want you
to kick me in the ass," insisted the Marine. So sthe leader shoved him
into the open and kicked him in the ass.
The Marine went
sprawling, but rolled to his knees, pulled a 9mm pistol from inside his
cammies and shot the leader dead. In the resulting confusion, he leapt
to his knapsack, pulled out his M4 carbine and sprayed the terrorists
with gunfire. In a flash, all of them were either dead or fleeing for
their lives.
As the Marine was untying Couric, Gibson and
Williams, they asked him, "Why didn't you just shoot them all in the
first place? Whey did you ask him to kick you in the ass?"
"What!?! replied the Marine, "and have you three asses report that I was the aggressor?"

I posted this on the 80's forum but it should
fit here as well. I was listening to my ipod this weekend and "Even in
the Quietest Moments" by Supertramp came on. As always, for some unkown
reason, I was both calmed and reminded of my time in Mexico. Another
song that always reminds me of Mexico is "Hotel California" by the
Eagles. I can't remember the name but there was a guy that used to sing
and play his guitar on the way to school. He started a band as well.
Anyway, it seemed that he always sang "Hotel California" Question! What
song or songs evokes this reaction for you?

This is pretty neat.
DON'T CHEAT BY SCROLLING DOWN FIRST!
It takes less than a minute. Work this out as you read ... Be sure you don't read the bottom until you've worked it out! This is not one of those waste of time things, it's fun.
1. First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like to go out to eat. (more than once but less than 10)
2. Multiply this number by 2 (just to be bold)
3. Add 5
4. Multiply it by 50
5. If you have already had your birthday this year add 1757... If you haven't, add 1756.
6. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.
You should have a three digit number.
The first digit of this was your original number. (I.e., How many times you want to go out to restaurants in a week.)
The next two numbers are
YOUR AGE ! ------ (Oh YES, it is!!!)

A Mexican is strolling down the street in Mexico City and kicks a bottle lying in the street. Suddenly out of the bottle comes a Genie. The Mexican is stunned and the Genie says, "Hello master, I will grant you one wish; anything you want."
The Mexican begins thinking, "Well, I really like drinking tequila." Finally the Mexican says, "I wish to drink tequila whenever I want, so make me pee tequila."
The Genie grants him his wish. When the Mexican gets home, he gets a glass out of the cupboard and pees in it. He looks at the glass and it's clear. Looks like tequila. Then he smells the liquid. Smells like tequila. So he takes a taste and it is the best tequila he has ever tasted. the Mexican yells to his wife, "Consuelo, Consuelo, come quickly."
She comes running down the hall and the Mexican takes another glass out of the cupboard and fills it. He tells her to drink it. It is tequila.
Consuelo is reluctant but goes ahead and takes a sip. It is the best tequila she has ever tasted. The two drank and partied all night.
The next night the Mexican comes home from work and tells his wife to get two glasses out of the cupboard. He proceeds to fill the two glasses. The result is the same. The tequila is excellent and the couple drinks until the sun comes up.
Finally Friday night comes and the Mexican comes home and tells his wife, "Consuelo, grab one glass from the cupboard and we will drink Tequila."
His wife gets the glass from the cupboard and sets it on the table. The Mexican begins to fill the glass; and when he fills it, his wife asks him, "But Pancho, why do we need only one glass?"
Pancho raises the glass and says, "Because tonight, Mi Amor, you drink from the bottle."

Some good news during this tough week from the

Monday morning humor...
Barbara Walters
of Television's 20/20 did a story on gender roles in Kabul ,
Afghanistan , several years before the Afghan conflict. She noted that
women customarily walked 5 paces behind their husbands.
She
recently returned to Kabul and observed that women still walk behind
their husbands. From Ms. Walter's vantage point, despite the overthrow
of the oppressive Taliban regime, the women now seem to walk even
further back behind their husbands and are happy to maintain the old
custom.
Ms. Walters approached one of the Afghani women and
asked, "Why do you now seem happy with the old custom that you once
tried so desperately to change?"
The woman looked Ms. Walters straight in the eyes, and without hesitation, said, "Land Mines."

Ramon, recuerdas que dijiste:
Mexico's Slim leapfrogs Buffett on rich list By Marla Dickerson, Times Staff Writer April 12, 2007
MEXICO CITY — That was fast.
Mexican
telecom mogul Carlos Slim Helu last month blew past U.S. investor
Warren Buffett to become the world's second-richest man with an
estimated net worth of $53.1 billion, according to Forbes magazine.
Slim
was ranked No. 3 on the publication's 2007 list of the world's richest
people, released a month ago. But he is making money faster than ink
can dry, thanks to rising share prices for his telecom holdings America
Movil and Carso Global Telecom.
In an article posted on its
website Wednesday, Forbes estimated that Slim added $4.1 billion to his
fortune since the publication calculated his net worth in February
prior to the list's March 8 release. Forbes said Slim surpassed
Buffett's $52.4-billion fortune March 29.
Slim now appears
destined to dethrone Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates, who has sat
atop the list for a record 13 years and whose wealth is estimated at
$56 billion.
Slim first appeared on Forbes' list in 1991, a year
after he and a consortium bought a controlling interest in Mexico's old
state-owned telephone company, Telmex. But his recent run-up in wealth
has been nothing short of stunning. Forbes calculates that he has added
$23 billion to his fortune during the last 14 months.
Slim's
holdings are so vast that it's nearly impossible for the average
Mexican to go a day without spending money on something in his empire,
which includes fixed-line telephone service, mobile phones, Internet
service, banking, insurance, restaurants, department stores, tobacco
products, building supplies and an airline.
Wags have dubbed him
"the Mexican Midas." Some Mexicans are thrilled that one of their own
ranks among the biggest of the big corporate titans. But his wealth has
proven controversial in a nation where half the populace lives in
poverty and near-monopolies such as Telmex are blamed for retarding
economic growth. Several studies have found that Mexicans pay some of
the highest telecom rates in the world, which has hurt the nation's
competitiveness.
Slim called a rare news conference after the
March release of the Forbes list. Sitting on a dais flanked by Rodin
sculptures from his collection, Slim defended his business practices
and announced new charitable endeavors. But he appears in no hurry to
give away the bulk of his fortune as Gates and Buffett say they will
do. He said businessmen could best help society by sticking to their
knitting instead of trying to play Santa Claus.

Mike, I believe being a soldier is a calling, and certainly being a
chaplain, I shared my call here before, I know that I know that I know
I was born to be a soldier and a chaplain and all my experiences in
life, from playing toy soldiers to being in the Marines to everything,
it all worked together to make me into who I am, this is my purpose in
life,period.
Now, just because your purpose is different it does
not make you any less of a man, you take care of your family, you work
to provide for them, you protect them, you love your country,I believe
you are good to go. I don't blame your dad for hating it because he was
drafted, I used to think all men should serve in the armed forces for
some time, but I have changed my mind on that, I believe in a volunteer
army, so that only those whose heart is in it will come in, not because
they are forced, not because there are benefits, not because the pay
check is steady, but because they must be a soldier, period. I would
like to hang with you, although I haven't had a beer since I was 19,
I'll have some Dr. Pepper though! Or Cherry Coke. Maybe we ought to get
together for dinner one day soon before I move back to Louisiana, I
will be leaving in June some time.
Dwight, how they have taken
the initiative to attack not only on 9/11 but all the times before, the
USS Cole, the World Trade Center in the 90's, the embassies in Africa
etc etc shows you that the statement "If we don't fight them over there
we are going to have to fight them here" is nothing but truth, the only
reason we have not been attacked here is because our soldiers and
Marines are draining their men, strength and resources there. You can
rest assured that if we quit before the job is done, they will
certainly bring it here.
On the other hand, as much as I support
our Commander in Chief, I do not not believe that in the long haul we
can make them be a democratic free society that will stay free and
democratic, and I believe that the only way we can effectively prevent
them from doing us great harm is by beating them so severly that they
can not get up again for a long time. How do you fight a sucide bomber?
that's easy, you kill him. You just have to be on the look out, that is
the hard part. But thousands of suicide bombers have been eliminated by
our soldiers, that is why we bring the battle to them and that is why
they have not yet blown themselves up here.
I am with you in
believing that our goal in war should not be to build a new society
conformed in our image and likeness, our goal should be to destroy the
enemies of America and destroy their capailities, as I said, to beat
them so bad they can not get up and achieve their goal of doing us harm
here. That's it. When they start to get up again to do us harm, then we
beat them again and come home.
It is a truly noble thing what
our great President wants to do, to build a free society for them and
help them build schools and hospitals etc, which is what we are doing.
But the reason I think that is not going to work in the long haul is
because of my understanding of history. In the book Timeline, which is
about time travel, one of the characters in the book says that people
who have no interest at all in history, which he calls temporal
provincials, are like the leaf of a tree that does not know he is part
of a tree. History makes us into who we are,it explains why we act the
way we act and believe the way we believe and everything. Our history
tree,us Americans and Westerners, the Judeo Christian tradition, is
different from the tree to which the Muslim world is a part of, we have
a background of the Greek and Roman world, the Roman Senate and the
Greek Philosophical views, we have the Hebrew relgious background and
the background of Chrisitianity, we have the Reformation, the
enlightment, the Great Awakenings, the voyage to America to worship God
freely, the freedom of expression the Consititution, the fighting for
freedom, the respect for the life of the innocent, our culture in the
US and through the Western world is part of a huge tree with deep roots
that makes us be who and how we are. The Muslims have a different tree,
they, though they look to Abraham as their father as the Jews and the
Christians, and though they were supressed by the Romans, their tree
grew different, they have no Messiah that came to set them free, they
have no Roman senate, they have no Reformation or Enlightment or Great
Awakening, they have no fighting for personal freedoms, no freedom of
speech no freedom of religion, their tree is a different from our tree
as their speech and their written language. Because of this, although
we may for a while bring democracy and freedom, totalitarian theocratic
type of government and militant aggressive behavior will always rise
again in that part of the world, Mohammed is called by scholars the
prophet of the sword, and as long as his religion is ingrained, they
will always rise up to fight, in fact, the prophecy regarding them
which God uttered in Genesis 16 says that they will always live in
hostility, their hand will always be against every man and every man's
hand against them. We can not stop that by building schools and
hospitals, although to do so is a good thing.
Because of this, I
believe that when we go to war against them, our goal should be to
defang them and then come home until their fangs grow back. We can
always find ways to help their innocent people if we set our minds to
it. The only thing that could change their heart is the Gospel of Jesus
Christ, not politics and not the force of arms, although the force of
arms could force them to live at peace, but we are not willing to do
what the Romans did.
Anyway, having said that, because we are not
willing to fight as hard as we could and to obliterate their
capabilities, often times because they hide behind women and children
or because we are not willing to offend their religious sensibilities,
we need to keep bringing the fight to them to drain their strength
there so that they will not do our little ones harm here, and we should
stay there until their new government can pick up the fight at least
for a while. As to the effectiveness of the war and the studies showing
terrorism has increased, well, it has not increased in our home and
that is our victory, the only reason they have not attacked here again
since 9/11 is because they can't, and they can't because we are rolling
them all around the parking lot.
Anyway, see what you did, you made me miss going to the Gym!

Elena: don't give up on your kitty. Even
though there is a chance that there is an underlying serious problem,
it may actually be something we can work with. I have had tremendous
success treating weight loss cats which we are suspicious of lymphoma
with a combination of medications: prednisonlone 5mg once to twice
daily, coupled with chlorambucil, 2 mg orally every 48 hrs. It's like
chemotherapy but no where near as intense. It does not make them sick
and they ofter respond great. I am currently treating several cats with
this protocol and they are doing well. My guess is that the tests that
have been done so far were done through our lab (ANTECH). This means
that I can look them up and your vet can get as many consultations as
he/she needs free of charge. I will be working the consult line on
Wednesday and Friday. He'she can call me anytime at 800-745-4725.
Dwight
and John: Thank you for your kind words. There is no doubt that the
human-animal bond is stronger than ever, especially in first world
countries. Pets have taken the place of children for many people.
Weather people agree or disagree with this life-style is a different
story. However the fact is that more now than ever, in our messed up
society where families are broken appart, people have found tremendous
strength, comfort and companionship in their pets.

DURBIN ANNOUNCES SENATE HEARING ON PET FOOD CONTAMINATION Thursday, April 5, 2007 [CHICAGO,
IL] - U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today announced the U.S. Senate
will hold an oversight hearing on the ongoing investigation and the
regulatory mechanisms that govern the pet food industry as the
widespread recall of contaminated pet food continues. "Many
cats, dogs and other pets, considered members of the family are now
suffering as a result of a deeply flawed pet food inspection system,"
said Durbin. "The FDA's response to this situation has been tragically
slow. Pet owners deserve answers. The uncertainty about what is safe to
feed their pets has gone on far too long. I want to learn exactly when
the FDA knew about the contamination, who is inspecting pet food
manufacturing plants, and whether we need to force the FDA to update
their regulations to protect our pets. Most importantly, I want to hear
how the FDA is going to work to resolve the current crisis and ensure
this doesn't happen again." Durbin, a member of the Senate
Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee, is working with Senator Herb
Kohl (D-WI), the Chairman of the Subcommittee, to schedule the hearing
shortly after the Senate returns from recess next week. Hearing
witnesses will include FDA officials who will be questioned on the
timeline of the investigation, the source of the contamination, and the
agency's regulatory and inspection responsibilities. The hearing will
also include outside experts who will discuss the current state of the
pet food industry, as well as regulatory or resource shortfalls that
led to the widespread recall of tainted pet food. While the
FDA is reporting 15 animal deaths due to poisoning, the agency has
received more than 10,000 complaints over the last several weeks.
Reports of the actual number of animal deaths due to tainted food vary
widely from other sources. Durbin is urging the FDA to take action in three specific areas: Delay
in reporting. Menu Foods, Inc. first noticed a potential problem on
February 20, 2007 but did not contact FDA until March 15, 2007. In the
meantime, other companies were selling tainted product and the supplier
wasn't aware that it had provided wheat gluten contaminated with
melamine. Durbin wants companies that delay reporting to the FDA and
endanger human and animal health to face penalties. Lack of
inspections. The Emporia, Kansas Menu Foods facility where many of
these products were made had never been inspected by the FDA. The
agency has been relying on the states to conduct inspections, but the
FDA has jurisdiction over all pet food manufacturing facilities and the
ultimate responsibility to ensure facilities comply with FDA standards.
Where there should be federal regulation, there is instead a patchwork
of state inspection systems and voluntary guidance. Durbin wants to
require the FDA to work with the states to establish a standardized set
of regulations and inspection requirements. Incomplete data
and reporting from the FDA. Blogs and nonprofit websites have filled a
gap and become the most efficient way to share information on
contaminations. Durbin wants to direct the FDA to create a similar
information sharing system that would allow state veterinarians, pet
owners and others to alert the FDA of possible contaminations. Timeline On
March 16, 2007 Menu Foods, Inc. initiated a voluntary recall of 60
million cans and pouches of wet pet food. The recall involves 42
varieties of cat food and 53 varieties of dog food made at its Emporia,
Kansas facility between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007. The
FDA, which has jurisdiction over the regulation and inspection of pet
food processing facilities, announced the recall on March 17, 2007.
According to FDA, it was first notified of the contamination on March
15, 2007. In addition to the Menu Foods recall of 95 different
labels of pet food, the recall was expanded between March 16 and March
31, 2007 to at least 4 more makers of pet food, all well-respected
premium brand companies - Nestle Purina, maker of Alpo; Hill's Pet
Nutrition, maker of Prescription Diet; P&G Pet Care, maker of Iams
and Eukanuba; and Del Monte. On March 26, 2007, in response to
reports that Menu Foods and FDA were underreporting the number of
animal illnesses (acute kidney failure) and deaths attributed to the
contamination, Durbin and Congresswoman DeLauro sent a letter to Andrew
von Eschenbach, Commissioner of the FDA, requesting that within 15 days
the FDA provide information on the number of pet food manufacturing
inspections and violations, a detailed timeline of the situation, an
analysis of FDA's oversight of pet food manufacturing facilities and a
report of actions taken since the recent pet food recall. A response is
due by April 10, 2007. On March 30, the FDA discovered that
the source of the contamination was a melamine-contaminat ed batch of
wheat gluten imported from China by a Chinese company called Xuzhou
Anying Biologic Technology Development Co. Ltd, which is based in
Wangdien, China. The same day, in response to the Xuzhou discovery, FDA
issued guidelines blocking imports of wheat gluten from that company
and stepped up inspections of all Chinese wheat gluten shipments. On
April 3, Nevada-based ChemNutra announced that it was the firm that had
imported the contaminated wheat gluten and that it then provided the
gluten to pet food companies. According to ChemNutra, all the wheat
gluten went to pet food companies and should not be in the human food
supply. ChemNutra initiated a nationwide recall of the contaminated
wheat gluten product on April 2, 2007. http://durbin. senate.gov/ record.cfm? id=271910

Georgina, WOW, you are one talented and busy
woman! I didn't realize you were an internist and had all that
specialized veterinary training and experience. I guess I forgot to ask
you in Acapulco last year or was too drunk to remember if you told me
all of that :)
And, I agree that it's up to a pet owner to
decide if they want to pursue treatment and monitoring as they get near
the end of their pet's lifespan. With all the medicine and technology
available to a pet owner these days it makes it more of an option. Pets
are just as important as kids to many people. I gladly spent $1500 to
keep my beloved dog alive, even though he only ended up living one more
week. My friend currently has an older dog with CHF and has been
successfully treating him with diuretics and vasodialators for almost a
year now.
Elena, give Bosco some lovin' kisses and hugs for me.
Spoil him with some fresh fish or meat and give up buying cans of pet
food until the FDA, stores, and vets get this thing all sorted out.

Alex, however noble the phrase, "if we don't
fight them over there, we'll have to fight them here" sounds, I just
can't think there's much truth to it. They will hate us no matter what
we do, and I think being suckered into their religious/sectarian
violence, war-lord battles, civil war, drug cartels, etc. does nothing
to make us safer. In fact this extended "war on terror" is draining our
reserves and soldiers and making us more vulnerable. How do you fight a
suicide bomber or IED?
After we trashed the terrorists camps and
scattered the individuals responsible for 9/11 we should have left. We
could have taken the 400+ billion and invested that in border security,
port security, and homeland security measures or even spent it on
Americans which need the money more than Halliburton.
And, if
you are still believe in taking the fight there makes things safer,
don't listen to me, turn to the statistics on international terrorism
from either the State Department's NCTC reports (which have political
bias and statistical flaws) or RAND's (which use a narrower defintion
of terrorism) and you'll see that terrorism is on the rise since we've
taken the fight over there.
Why fight against some ethereal
mindset for people who don't even want us in their countries? Today in
Iraq our brave soldiers have fought and died so 10s of thousands of
Shiites could tear up and stomp on Old Glory, spit in our face, and
demand we leave.
Maybe you're right Alex, but my patience (like the majority of Americans) for this administration and war has run out.

Georgina - You are an angel for providing so
much information! My secondary vet mentioned the biopsy. Essentially
the feeling I got is that we could do the biopsy, which is expensive
and invasive, find out Bosco has lymphoma, and then not really have any
options other than more expensive surgery and tests, that will not cure
it, just prolong things. Is that about right?
My sister came to
DFW on Wednesday as my 17-year old nephew was playing in a soccer
tournament. I had NO idea what a HUGE deal these things are! Parents
pay thousands of dollars for "club" teams, to join, to buy all matching
uniforms/sweats/bags/etc., travel to whatever tournament the coach
selects.
Eric's team did not fare well in the tournament as
they have only been a team for 3 weeks and have a new coach. The boys
don't even know each other yet, so their play was not collaborative at
all. But the individuals certainly had a lot of talent. Hope the coach
can get them working together as a unit quickly. Eric had been
top-scorer on his MD team so it was frustrating for him.
What is
insane, they flew from Denver and were looking forward to some warm
weather, yet there we were freezing our buns off on the field and it
snowed!
I really did have a blast doing an Easter egg hunt and
baskets for Alicia and her kids. The hidden eggs were all "cascarones"
the eggs filled with confetti. I told the kids that the winner (most
eggs) would get eggstra special treatment. Ashlyn and Lauren tied, and
the treatment was that Eric, Alicia and I got to smash their eggs on
their head. Big fun for all of us.

Sorry I hadn't commented on the tainted pet
food. I hadn't had a chance to read the chat for a while. I am board
certified in internal medicine and work full time for a specialty
referral hospital. I am also a part time counsultant for an
international veterinary laboratory called ANTECH diagnostics as well
as a part time clinical pathologist for ANTECH. The recent events with
the tainted pet food have kept me incredibly busy in all of my 3 jobs.
It
has been an unfortunate ordeal. I have been involved with many dogs and
cats that have been affected by the food, many of which have died.
Needless to say, I have been receiving letters from attorneys which are
getting busy trying to file law suits against the pet food company.
Hill's is currently working with us in covering the cost of screeing animals that have been exposed to the food.
Elena:
with regards to weight loss in a cat: when the minimum data base (ie
CBC, serum chemistry, thryoid hormone, UA, UMIC, radiographs, and
abdominal ultrasound), are within normal limits, then the most likely
cause for weight loss is a problem with the GI tract. In an older cat,
GI lymphoma becomes the primary rule out followed by severe inflamatory
bowel disease which is trying to convert into lymphoma. There is no
blood test that will detect this. Only biopsies of the gut will provide
a definitive diagnosis. The minimum data base at our practice runs
about $1000. Obtaining GI biopsies is anywhere from $1200 to $3000,
depending on the method we choose (endoscopy vs. surgery). The $350 for
blood tests that you have spent sounds about right. It is important not
to jump to conclusions and to have your vet (or a local specialist) go
down the list of differentials systematically. It is the only way to
arrive at a diagnosis so that a proper treatment plan can be
recommended. With respect to a homecooked diet, I do have several
recepies that I can recommend. I just need some specifics such as
current medical conditions, body weight, and past pertinent history
(for example any known allergies). Feel free to email me at
gmarquez63@gmail.com.
John: It is often the owner's decision not
to further pursue monitoring their pet as it gets older. With certain
conditions, this could make sense. With kidney failure however,
monitoring makes perfect sense. The reason is that we can actually do a
lot to help their quality of life as well as their longevity, by
monioring them closely. What I have found happens in general practice
is that vets don't monitor some of the most important parameters and
therefore, they can't really recommend much in the way of treatment.
For example, they don't check blood pressure, they don't check acid
base status, and they don't check the RBC count. They limit their
rechecks to running a BUN and creatinine and then not doing much about
anything else. Some of the typical treatments that we institute are
subcutaneous fluids, calcitriol, erythropoietin, potassium
supplementation, treatment for hypertension, bicarbonate
supplementation, and most certainly a modification in their diet. For
the right patient and owner we will even provide hemodialysis and
kidney transplants.

Loya - I have been asking myself why? Why
would a man leave his family like this to put their life in harms way?
At first I thought, how selfish. But then I realized that a selfish man
wouldn't have the courage to do what you are doing. How do you make
this kind of decision? Or is it even a decision? It's not like you were
hoping not to get sent to one of the most desolate and violent places
on earth. You wanted to go. Or maybe something was telling you that you
needed to go. I don't know. This is way out of my league, far too
complicated and downright frightening. My old man was drafted and hated
every minute of it. Never once has he talked about that experience with
me. And never having had that experience, believe it or not, it
sometimes feels like I haven't fulfilled some requisite male rite of
passage. Maybe I need to take up bunge jumping or something. But
honestly, when you watch a movie like Flags of our Fathers, you can't
help but wonder what kind of man you really are. Would I follow orders
or cower in my boots? And the kicker is, I will never know unless I
have that kind of experience. So, I guess I will never know. Loya, you
have made me feel a lesser man because your cojones are far bigger than
mine. Lao Tzu said being deeply loved by someone gives you strength,
while loving someone deeply gives you courage. I can't image that a man
alone could make this kind of decision and have think that your
relationship with God has given you the strength and courage to see
this through. I do hope we can sit down and have a beer together some
day. I think I would like that.

John B. hilarious! That picture is so funny I had to save it to show it around!
Dwight,
thanks for your kind words, I am not dreading going to Afghanistan, I
am looking forward to it! I still remember how it felt that day, to see
our homeland under fire and her people blown away, I still haven't
forgotten how those towers fell, we had neighbors still inside going
through a living hell, and I haven't forgotten those that went down
like heroes in that Pennsylvania field... and the way I see it, if we
don't fight them there, we will have to fight them here, so I don't
mind taking the fight to them over there my brothah, not at all!... At
the same time I hate to be away from my family for a long period of
time, but that is the struggle every soldier with a family has, they
desire to take the fight to the enemies of America there so that they
won't be able to bring it here, but they hate to leave their families
for so long, but ultimately we do it to preserve a nation for our
children, free, and free of the fear so many around the world live
with, where they can't even go eat at the pizza joint or ride a bus
without a bomb going off. If we don't take th fight to them over there,
that is what we will have here.
Anyway, my brothah, if you can get that virtual AHS going at 2nd Life that will be great! I look forward to it!

I have seen and used Second Life, if only to
use as an example for 3D modeling for a "serious" game I was working
on. It is easy to use and can get pretty interesting...but not
somewhere where I'd chose to hang out.
But that being said,
folks are making quite a nice bit of change making and selling stuff
for that virtual world. Check out E-Bay and then search for "Second
Life". Big are folks that have accumulated some "Linden" dollars while
in the world and then resell to others.

Alex, that sucks you have to go over to
Afghanistan. Keep your ass covered and don't do anything heroic. Maybe
Congress can get you and the rest of the troops home as soon as
possible. W will probably never let go no matter what happens or what
the rest of the country says.
I have heard of Second Life, but
haven't signed up for an account. It looks like a pretty cool 3D

Mike L. yeah, that's it! 2nd Life! I guess it depends who you hang
out with there, all it is it is a place where you can "talk" with your
friends via live text messaging? or I m ming? whatever, you talk as you
type, so if you hang with your friends you talk about whatever you and
your friends talk about. It caught my attention when my daughter
Kirsten, who is not allowed to go there unless I am around, or my wife
(you never know who will try to talk to her), anyway, she had her
little alter ego, avatar?, walking around this mall and there were all
these virtual people walking around and then I saw, she went by a group
of friends that were sitting around just talking to each other. In
other words, their little virtual people were sitting talking while in
real life the people were typing at the computer, you could even see
the little virtual people moving there hands as the real people typed
their messages. So, for example, if we had our own hang out world,
cause you can build your own place, a beach, a city or whatever, if we
had our own place and we went there, then you all's little people would
be sitting there talking about concerts or soccer or partying or
whatever other 2 inches deep subject you want to find :o) I figure one
of you computer saavy people, like my buddy Dwight, could probably
build a pretty cool place and then we could all construct our own
virtual person to look like each of us forever 21 and if all of us got
in and then we could invite the class of 80 and 82, then we could go in
that world and hang out in the virtual world. We could all agree that
certain times of the day we would expect more of us to stop by at the
same time so we could hang. I think that would be really cool! So,
Dwight, why don't you check out Second Life and see if you can build a
hang out place for us and then we can all go in there and live chat
through our virtual people, hooah?
I think that would be really cool.
Anyway,
in other news, I finally got my final orders. I have to report at Fort
Polk, Louisiana on 3 July, I am officially assigned to the 4th Brigade,
10th Mountain Division also known as the Patriot Brigade. Last time I
told you all that was a possibility, then I got orders to join the 46th
Engineer Battalion which hasn't even been to Iraq (I guess they've been
busy rebuilding Louisiana), but yesterday I got ammended orders
assigning me to the Patriot Brigade. That is a hard core, toe to toe,
close with and destroy the enemies of America unit, not support, not
logistics, not admin, it is a direct combat unit, a "fix bayonets"
unit... hooah! It is what I have always wanted! I don't know why, I
guess I'm crazy or maybe I am just wired that way, but I am really
excited about it and I am looking forward to it! Once I get to Fort
Polk in July, I got an MRE in August (Mission Readiness Exercise),
which means I am deploying to Afghanistan, probably the end of August.
This is it, my friends, my number is up, it is my turn now to go where
many men have gone before in history and to confront face to face the
enemies of our great American nation! I am looking forward to it!...
although I am not looking forward to being away from my kids for an
extended period of time (for which I am very grateful to the Lord that
I will be deploying from Louisiana because Louisiana is home, and so my
wife and kids will have their Maw Maw and cousins and friends and
church family close by), and I am not looking forward to the suffering
I will see, I just pray the Lord will spare my life and let me live
until my children are grown, that is my request.
Anyway, my Buddy Dwight, see if you being a computer genius can set up a world for us at 2nd life, hooah?

Michael: Don't forget Buddy Guy's Blues Bar
somewhere near Michigan Ave. There is a really cool day time liquor
store about 2-3 blocks form Buddy Guy's where at night it magically
turns into a bar. That is where you wanna go after a night of Blues at
Buddy Guy's. Have fun!

Thanks for the kind thoughts Dwight! Hey, I
have to travel to Chicago next week..Does anyone that posts here live
in Chicago and want to go with me to listen to Blues? There's a place
in Palatine with 3 floors of Blues where Coco Taylor used to sing.

Mike, THAT IS AWESOME! Congratulations bro!
VERY exciting amigo. What a wonderful thing to do in life, share the
love with those that need it most :) I always looked up to you in high
school and now I know why.
Speaking of taking your kid to
concerts Mike if you read back a few posts you'll see that my daughter
Chelsea and I went to the last Jackyl concert together here in
Cincinnati. She's 18 now and has assumed the responsibility of driving
her dad to shows so he can drink heavily :)

Elena: No problem with not meeting in
CO. And no, I wouldn't be embarassed listening and interjecting into
your "girl talk" but I understand. No need to comment more.
Our
cat has been around for 19 years now and only in the last year has she
been having some reinal failure, but that comes with old age. We did
put her on prescription diet and that has helped, but we never gave her
the regular stuff to begin with. We always fed her the Feline
Maintenance from Hill's Science Diet, and based on the ingredients, it
was better than the commercial, though not by much. The ash content was
what we were working with.
We also opted to stop the vet's
regular request for blood tests to monitor her advancement or not.
After 19 years, we're just keeping her comfortable. When we asked the
vet, he couldn't give us any good reasons to continue as we already had
opted not to put her on special meds or surgery.
Still waiting to her Georgina weigh in on all this. (hint hint)
Haven't
dealt with homemade cat food, but we do feed her some sardine and tuna
juice occassionally. We keep her away from all dairy products.

Latest news is that "Pounce" treats have now
also been found to be tainted so that might be the problem we have.
Gotta throw away about 8 bags when I get home.
Really annoying is that Hill Science Diet too. So we pay extra to buy from vet, and it is sclock manufacturer stuff.
Anyone have any home cat food recipies they like? I'm going to look online and possibly do that for a while.

Elena - Our cat Frank lost a ton of weight
very quickly due to a fast growing tumor. I'd imagine the blood tests
would catch something like that, right? This recall pretty scarry. We
also found some tainted cat treats in our pantry!

Haven't logged in here in awhile...Alex Loya,
are you talking about Second Life? I checked that out awhile back to
see how we could use it where I work but lost interest. I did get to
choose an avatar that looked like Iggy Pop and I could fly without
taking drugs but in the end felt out of place and thought it best left
to, what I imagined to be, a much younger crowd. Over the past year my
wife Jennifer and I have been working through the long process of
adopting a child from Vietnam. We completed all the paperwork and we're
now waiting for a referral and expect to travel to Vietnam sometime in
the fall. This will be my first child and I'm excited but scared to
death. On the plus side, I'll have someone to go with me to rock
concerts!

Elena, sorry to hear about your brother losing
his cat. I'm not sure if they've determined it was the wheat gluten
that the FDA discovered was contaminated with melamine or what the New
York State Food Lab just recently had discovered as aminopterin, a
banned rodent poison. Here's a good current write-up on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_North_America_pet_food_recallBut,
getting back to your questions about the $350 in blood tests. I don't
think that the sort of blood tests your vet is screening for would
necessarily have the sophistication to detect these compounds. The
amount of cost to run blood samples through a gas or liquid
chromatography mass spectrometer against known standards for the
compounds identified above would be quite costly. Did your vet tell you
what tests he actually ran? I would assume he probably performed the
typical blood chemistry, parasite, bacterial, and viral battery. I also
would think that if he performed a toxicological screening, it would be
for the typical compounds that a pet would likely be poisoned by like
ethylene glycol, lead, common pesticides, and other toxic household
chemicals like rat poisons. Also, depending on how amount and how long
ago the tainted food was ingested, your cat may have metabolized and
eliminated most of the poison from his bloodstream. Did you purchase any of the tainted food for your cat? Alex, sounds like they're playing The Sims. Yes, we need one called Sims Colegio Americano :)

My brother lost his cat to that tainted pet food problem.
One
of our cats has lost 1.5 of his 7 pounds and the vet was unable to
figure out why. We already spent $350 on blood tests. I would think if
it was the food, that would have shown up, wouldn't it have?

Eric Clapton to hold Crossroads benefit
Eric Clapton is having a jam session with more than a dozen of his favorite guitar-playing pals, and everyone is invited.
Clapton's
Crossroads Guitar Festival, scheduled July 28 in Chicago, will benefit
Crossroads Centre, the drug-rehab facility he founded in Antigua a
decade ago. Tickets go on sale Saturday.
Scheduled performers
include B.B. King, Willie Nelson, Vince Gill, Sheryl Crow, Jeff Beck
and John Mayer, among others — and Clapton is already excited about
spontaneous collaborations.
"Some of it's mapped and some of it
isn't," he said Wednesday by phone from Winnipeg, Canada, where he is
on tour. "We have to leave a little bit of it to chance."
This
will be the second concert Clapton has held to raise funds for the
Caribbean rehab facility, which now includes a halfway house and
community-education program. The first concert was in Dallas in 2004.
Many
performers plan to return — "A great testament to how much everybody
loves Eric Clapton," said Gill, who played at the first Crossroads fest.
Establishing the rehab center fulfilled a personal dream, Clapton said.
"I
haven't had a drink or drug for quite a long time and it's changed my
life completely. That's something I want to pass on and share with
other people," he said.
Clapton said clinics such as Crossroads are "very necessary."
"I
think it's suffered a little bit in some of the recent publicity with
the celebrities who go there," he said. "It's a bit of a witch hunt
going on in some of the news channels about rehabs in general. It's a
little scary because ... the last thing we want is to lose any of the
rehabs."
The 62-year-old guitarist is set to wrap up his world
tour in April and "have a little break in England" with his family
before the Crossroads concert.
"Then I'm going to disappear for a year or two," he said, "and have some fun."

Dominic, just posted your request on the 80 chat. Here's a link for future reference: http://www.quicktopic.com/26/H/JQvjFtLNxvK--- Clapton
ROCKS! Elena and Dominic, that is SWEET that you two got a chance to
see him. I'd love to catch his show as I've never been blessed by one
of his performances live. Haven't heard of the Amero, but it
would be funny to see all the redneck Confederates get all up in arms
about that one. It's not such a big deal since we've already got them
freakin' over Muslim clothing, people speaking Spanish, and walling off
the borders. --- Van Halen Induction to the R n' R Hall of Fame. The
absence of most of Van Halen's founding members was downright sour.
Eddie Van Halen, who went to rehab last week, was a no-show, as was his
brother Alex. Former lead singer David Lee Roth, who sung such hits as
"Jump" and "Panama," with the band, boycotted in a dispute over what
song he would sing. The only two who were present were
Sammy Hagar and bassist Michael Anthony. Velvet Revolver performed two
of the band's hits before Hagar and Anthony performed with the night's
house band, led by Paul Shaffer. Hagar said he wished his bandmates could be there, but "it's out of our control." "It's hard for Mike and I to be up here to do this, but you couldn't have kept me away from this with a shotgun," Hagar said.

Dominic: Heheheh...that would be a feat. As it
is, everyone's up in arms because they forgot to include the words "In
God We Trust" from a few of the $1.00 coin pressings. Can you imagine
what would happen if indeed we became an economic union with Canada and
Mexico? How many folks would crawl out of the woodwork to fight that
one?
As it stands, I'm against it. We're already devalued
against the EURO and combining the US dollar as an unionized entity
with others may only serve to further devalue it. Canada is already
strong on its own, but I cannot say the same for the Mexican side of
the equation.
The reason it work for Europe is because socially,
they do act without borders. Adding a socio-economic rule and
constitution further creates the union. We have closed boder policies
between the US and Mexico (this has already been debated enough) and I
do not see that changing but getting even more stricter. Creating a
socio-economic union with Mexico would require these boders to
dissapear in order for commerce to act as one. This will not happen.
Therefore...Amero will not.
Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong...

Dwight: Yes, the hypocracy amongst the
neo-cons about the purjury and obstruction of justice conviction is so
apparent that it is laughable. We'll see if indeed Shrub does things
'by the book' as he claimed. Apparantly, a presidential pardon requires
a convicted fellon to wait five years before requesting a pardon.
Theoretically, Shrub wouldn't pardon him if he indeed intends to do
things by the book as he claimed during his campaigning speeches and
after taking office when responding to Clinton's pardons. But we all
know this adminstration does nothing "by the book." They make it up as
they go in order to suit their needs. (Okay, stepping off of the soap
box now.)

just sitting there. They will even yell at you to sit down if you stand

I am extremely exited as we scored

Dominic, you sure called it with the Van Halen
tour. But, I'm beginning to believe that you are blessed by the Rock
Gods for all your belief and worship. May the Lords Daltry and Townsend
reward you for your faith my brother. And, that goes for everyone else
going to the THE WHO concert next week in DF. Have one kickass time!
John,
interesting discovery. I'm all for the exploration of large, exposed

Scooter
Libby, what a role model for the administration. First it was, I'll
fire anyone associated with leaking the CIA name. Then, six months or a
year later it was I'll make sure they're accountable to any laws they
broke. Now, we get regret and sorrow that he was convicted. Next, duh,
um let me go out on a limb here and say that I think he may just get a
pardon :)

everyone can get extremely drunk and take a cab back and forth from the

Ann / Dwight: Dosen't look good for VH tour.
It will be interesting next month to see Eddy, Alex, Michael, Roth +
Haggar at the R & R Hall of fame induction. I bet some of them
don't even show up. Eddy has always been the problem, some people describe him as a mix of Michael Jackson and Axl Rose. If
VH dosen't go this summer, there is the Eagles tour + new album, The
Who on tour + new album, Genesis reunited on tour & Rush new album
due March 1st + tour etc etc. So there is plenty of shows for us old
farts!
New music: If any of you are into guitar god type albums
I can highly recomend the new album from guitarist Paul Gilbert. It
really rocks!
Last but not least, for all you Pussy lovers out there, Nashville Pussy will be touring most of the US this spring.

I hope that isn't true Ann as I was hoping to catch one of the shows.

Neighborhood
Rant: I serve on the homeowners board. We have a couple ladies on the
board who are fixated on making our neighborhood look like Ft. Knox.
First they campaigned for big, mongo gates (the old ones were elegant

Dominic. I agree. The superbowl was a supersnore. Have a good time at the Who concert. They are my wife's favourite group. I
have an amusing story to tell. Last Saturday my son asked me if his
hamster was alright. I went in to check and of course CHIP had assumed
room temperature. This hamster was special to him because it had been
given to him right after the death of my wife's sister who was married
to my brother Mike. The hamster had been a healing balm. Rather than
dragging out its tiny carcass we decided to sneak into town 20 miles
away to "replace" CHIP. I headed into town not knowing the weather was
changing for the worst. By the time I found a suitable replacement at
The Critter Corner the temperature had dropped by 20 degrees and the
winds had picked up to 50 clicks. Two miles from the farm I hit a
whiteout. For those not familiar with this term it means that suddenly
one cannot see. Not even 10 inches from the car. To make matters worse
the replacement hamster chewed its way out of its carton. I managed to
grab it and I stuffed it into my jacket. As I inched my way down the
highway I suddely saw and accident. One of the cars took off and left
the scene. The lady who was standing in the middle of the road turned
out to be one of my son's teachers. She came into my car to seek
shelter. Then the storm got really bad. So I called 911. As soon as the
dispatch officer asked the nature of the emergency the replacement
hamster began to bite me on the stomach. This was of course interpreted
as screams of agony. But I was not about to explain to the officer why
I had a hamster in my shirt in the middle of a blizzard. I tried to
calmly explain our situation. By this time the hamster had gone postal.
The lady I was helping was laughing hysterically. It was truely weird.
We were told to stay put. While we were waiting we were being narrowly
missed by transport trucks too stupid to stay off the road. Eventually
I made it back and put the replacement hamster in CHIP'S cage. Our son
not being stupid did not fall for this, thus after many tears he
resolved to love his new hamster who he called Payton. And who says
living in the wilds of Canada does not have its advantages. By the way.
It has been Arctic cold for over a week. Brrr.

Gracias mi buen Dominic, but I know he is
talking about being sober four years. "Pareja" is what Andres and I
used to call each other when we were kids before we started hanging out
with the Tepeji Gang. Andres and I used to hang out all the time, all
through 8th grade it was just him and I hanging, we started calling
each other "pareja" because Starsky and Hutch was our favorite show on
TV and they called each other "pareja" in the Spanish speaking version.
Billy Parra joined Andres and me in 9th grade, we used to hang out on
the ramp under one of the arches until between 11th and 12th grade we
had a falling out and Andres and Billy moved over to the smoking area
with you all. I started hanging with a new kid, Brian Hardy, until some
kids who thought lowly of me began to put a bad word in for me with
him, whisperers separating chief friends, not a good thing, but I pray
God will forgive them that sin and all their sin even as He forgave me,
but then Andres and Billy and I made peace and I joined the infamous
Tepeji Gang at the smoking lounge... and now you know the rest of the
story.

Hi all. Just back from Vegas at the National

through auto dealers). Imagine, 6 days being surrounded by car
salesmen! I know you are all jealous.
Did get to see "O" for
the 3rd time (love it) and go to the Wynn and Palm hotels, which were
under construction last time I was in Vegas.
And it was interesting to be in that town for the SuperBowl. Wow there was a lot of money on every nuance of that game.

Will arrive in DF on friday 16th, will be at Salvadors restaurant at
noon on the 17th, will proceed to drink heavy amounts of tequila and
will then attend The Who at Foro Sol that night. Sunday in Xoxhimilco puking from a chalupa. You in or you out?
The super bore sucked! Boring game.

Andres, gusto oir de to pareja! Felicidades en tu aniversario! Here
is another story for you all, about 7 months ago, back in July or
August of last year, when I was first appointed as Chaplain for the 1st
Battalion 1st SWTG(A) out at Camp Mackall, when they first gave me my
office, I was looking for an outlet to plug in my lap top. When I found
one, it had one of those orange utility looking extensions plugged in,
I noticed the extension was coming out of some little humming gadget
that was on top of a cabinet, but it didn't seem to lead anywhere else.
Well, since it was my office I unplugged the orange extension and the
humming thing stopped humming and I have been using that outlet ever
since to plug in my lap top. Well, this last Thursday, six or seven
months later, SGT Dawson, the man in charge of taking care of all our
computers, says "Hey Chaplain, you mind if I take a look in your
office?" I said, "Sure! Go ahead!" I let him in my office and he
started looking around when he came up to the little humming gadget
that had stopped humming six months ago, he followed the orange
extension and saw that it was unplugged and he said "Huh, someone
unplugged it!" It turns out that humming gadget somehow or other
controlled the flow to some other gadget where they hold conferences
when the Commanding General and the full bird Colonel come around Camp
Mackall, and for the last six months they had been trying to figure
out, called in specialists and everything, why that whatever it was
wasn't working!... Hey man, that other SGT whose office they gave me
didn't say a word to me or anyone else about that extension and the
little humming box or anything, he just up and left to Fort Huachuca or
something! But, seriously, though, I have some really important
information for you all! Now you can see anyone's Driver's License on
the Internet, including your own! I just searched for mine and there it
was...picture and all!..... thanks Homeland Security! Go to the web site, and check it out. It's unbelievable!!! I definitely removed mine. I suggest you do the same. Just enter your name, city and state to see if yours is on file. If your license comes on the screen, click the box marked "Please Remove". This will remove it from public viewing, but not from law enforcement. Please notify all your friends so they can protect themselves, too. Believe me they will thank you for it. http://www.license.shorturl.com/

Fun Super Bowl last night. After the first
touchdown, I thought the Bears were going to take it, but alas, the
Colts were the better team. I didn't enjoy the commercials as much
though I did find Bud's "Paper, Rock, or Scissors" pretty funny (okay,
the Sierra Mist "Beard Combover" was pretty good too). But I did come across this snippet which I did enjoy, it is an oldie, but a goodie... http://video.yahoo.com/video/play?vid=ae1a...c2bd09232ca.1047101Cheers...

Good to see this Board is as active as it is.
Postea su servidor, Paul Freudenthaler, '82. For our brethren from the
class of '81 - vamos a armar reunion en Acapulco de la clase de '82. It
is scheduled to take place over Memorial Day weekend. We had over 100
attendees in 2002 - not sure if we'll hit those numbers in 2007 - but
we'll sure try. No cabe mencionar que nos encantaria ver a nuestros
colegas del '81. Saludos a todos.

Jennifer, I am sorry to hear about your dad, I pray that you and
your family will be comforted in this time of sorrow, perhaps you can
take some comfort in knowing that your daddy lived a full and generous
life, and that his eyes saw the beauty of God's creation.
Today
I had the toughest, typical American Army Sergeant Major with the big
chin, rough voice and foul mouth, at Camp Mackal, the Special Forces
Training Ground where I work, come to me wanting to share something
with me. I am always inviting him to my Spiritual Fitness Programs
(Bible Studies), but he never comes, and whenever I see him I tell him
"Hey Sergeant Major, I am praying for you and for your son in Iraq!"
His son is a U.S. Marine who has been deployed in Iraq for a while.
Well, this kind hearted, rough spoken, tough looking typical American
Army Sergeant Major with the big chin came very sheepishly to me today
and he said "Hey Chaplain..." and he proceeded to tell me something
that happened this week. His son was out on a patroling convoy on one
of four machine gun mounted humvees, at some point sensing a threat,
they circled the wagons, and as they did so, there was a tremendous
explosion! One of the humvees was blown to a thousand pieces, and so
were the Marines in it, but the Sergeant Major's son, who was right
there next to it, was not touched. The Sergeant Major, who will never
come to hear the Bible, just wanted to tell me prayer worked, he said
"I'm gonna tell my son that the ex Marine Chaplain was praying for
him!" and, in his rough way without words, he asked me to keep praying
for his son...

The Return of The Rivers
All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.
It is raining today in the mountains.
It is a warm green rain with love in its pockets for spring is here, and does not dream of death.
Birds happen music like clocks ticking heaves in a land where children love spiders, and let them sleep in their hair.
A slow rain sizzles on the river like a pan full of frying flowers, and with each drop of rain the ocean begins again

And a fishing guide too! Sigh
Man, if I could only turn back time and get our Dads together, we'd surely spend lots of time fishing together in Mexico!
The next time I'm in Hershey, PA and stop by, maybe we can share some fishing stories and share some memories :)

Dwight - yes, my father spent many trips deep
sea fishing in Zijuatanejo. We used to spend every New Year's on the
beach there. Fly fishing was my father's first love. The Kootenai River
is a great place for it. He spent many hours fishing for himself as
well as guiding others down the river.
Thanks for your kind
words. We had his memorial service yesterday and there wasn't a dry eye
in the room. The room was packed and there were a couple of great life
tributes. He touched many lives in the small town of Libby.

Jennifer, my dear girl, I'm so sorry to hear that you lost your Dad.
Man,
a log cabin in the woods, in Montana wilderness! That's wonderful to
hear that he lived along the banks of a beautiful river where he loved
to fish. If I could pick a place on Earth to spend my days before
leaving on that invisible spaceship I'd certainly pick a spot like your
Dad :)
May you and your Mother enjoy those sweet memories
forever and ever of the days together 'cross Mexico and Montana. I'm
sure your Father must've been very proud of you Jennifer, your career,
and the life he nurtured and shared with you. I bet he took pride and
bragged often about his girl Jennifer :)
That is cool that your Dad was that into the Bear Boosters.
By
the way, did your Dad get many chances to deep sea fish down in Mexico?
I did a few times with my Dad off the coastline of Acapulco and
Zijuatanejo. We still get up to Canada every other year or so to fish.
I bet your Dad was heavily into fly fishing along the Kootenai River.

I sent an email to many AHS'ers that I had
addresses for, but realized that I didn't have Tennyson's and others
that might want to know.
I wanted to let you know that my
father passed away peacefully on Wed 1/17 at home in Libby, Montana. My
sister Laurie, mother and myself were all with him. He had a long,
brave battle with prostate cancer that finally took over. While we were
in Mexico '72-'91, my father was active in the Bear Boosters and served
as the president for a couple of years. In addition, he also served on
the board of directors for ASF for several years. In fact, when I
graduated, he was able to present me my diploma.
He and my
mother have lived in Libby, Montana since '91 in a log cabin on the
Kootenai River where he loved to fish. He will be missed, but he
certainly left a wonderful memory for those that he knew and that loved
him.

VH crew back in September of '92 or '93 while they played here in
Denver...my wife even ended up with several sets of Alex's drum sticks
that day. It was also the day of a terrible snowstorm and the concert
went on, even though it was an outside venue and folks were throwing
snow at Eddie. We were friends with the head carpenter for that
tour. We ended up leaving a tape of "The Doctor" on the bus for the
band to watch (is was all about video psychotherapy -- http://www.videopsychotherapy.com). Anyway...that
was a good 14 years ago which was my last VH concert (or any 70/80's

Anthony himself just hanging out at a pretty cool place called Tabasco
Beach where you can order your first drink of the morning by 8:00 am.
Ann: Time to organize a class reunion somewhere in the beach.
John
B: Michael Anthony is the bass player for Van Halen. He is a good
friend and band mate in Van Halen of Sammy Hagar who owns the Cabo Wabo
Cantina in Cabo San Lucas. Since it was New Years, he was down there
doing a few shows (for free) at the Cantina with Hagar and the drummer
of The Red Hot Chili Peppers and a few other musicians. Anyway, if anyone can get down to Cabo 1st week in October we will party like it was 1981, see you all there!
George: Need back stage tickets for The Who March 17th in DF?
Maroney: What is Barrett feeling for this next Sunday? Colts-Patriots and Saints-Bears
Rock News: Rumor
has it Van Halen will tour next year without Sammy or Anthony as those
guys will be replaced on bass by Wolfgang Van Halen (son of Eddy) and
lead vocal will be the son of Alex Van Halen (the drummer)if they can't
come to an agreement with Diamond Dave. Who knows about all that
gossip, those guys have so much freaking money they really don't need
to tour. If you guys really want hear a kick-ass band who is going to
rule the airwaves, get debut album from the Australian band, Wolfmother.

I did well. Santa brought me a whole new wardrobe. Yeah!! Dwight.
Do the locals icefish near your neck of the woods? Last year there was
no icefishing because of warmer temperatures. It looks like the same is
in store for this season. There has never been two winters back to back
where the water does not freeze. I reckon that the unemployed makinaw
jacket wearing human gastropods will have to figure out something else
to do. Go figure. The Bingo Palace is an option but most of them wear
wrist braces thus they cannot hold the Bingo dobbers. Dominic. Como te la pasaste?

Man,
I was so drunk after watching the Bengals lose on New Years I really
didn't need to drink much the rest of the night. But, I remembered the
words of wisdom from Dominic, PARTY LIKE A ROCK STAR! :)
John M,
I can buy Sidral at a grocery store about 5 miles from my house. Come
to think of it, we've got quite a few Mexicans hanging around the
county lately. Keep 'em coming and soon I'll have cacajuates japones y

John B, thanks man, I appreciate that.

Happy New Year to all!... today I revived an old Acadian custom my
forefathers used to practice every New Year. The Acadians would hold a
midnight mass New Year's eve and then they would go home and celebrate,
eating food and hanging out, and eating the famous beignettes. Then the
dad would go to each one of his children and do a sign of the cross on
each one of their foreheads and pronounce a blessing on each of them
for the coming New Year.
Well, being a Southern Baptist I
don't do the mass, and my children being yet so small they don't stay
up to receive the New Year, except for the two older ones. What I did
do, however, and I will do from this year on even as my forefathers did
two hundred and fifty years ago is today after we ate I went around the
table to each one of my kids, did a little sign of the cross with my
thumb on each one of their foreheads, laid my right hand on each one of
their heads and prayed for each one of them asking God to bless each
one of them this coming year... next year we will probably be back in
Louisiana... and we will bring back the beignettes.
John B. good
to hear you are light, I think we should just keep it that way cause
you and I are both very passionate about what we believe from opposing
sides so we will just always end up buttin' heads. We do have some
things in common, though, the AHS is a big one, and I'm sure we could
find other stuff in common if we didn't butt heads so much. I don't
think I need to be concerned so much about being shot by my own
soldiers, but they did find a terrorist manual in which the enemy
combatants are instructed to target the American chaplains because,
they believe, that destroys the American soldiers' morale. Anyway, I
hope you had a happy New Year!
George, its like water off a ducks back! I am Mr. Teflon!
John
M. I did el brindis with ice tea and my wife and oldest daughter with
white grape juice, I haven't had a chela in, let's see... 24 going on
25 years, just about a quarter of a century! I never did drink too much
beer anyway.
Homero, your advice to "duck!" reminds me of how in
the Marines we were told that in Viet Nam there were a lot more black
Marines than white Marines killed in action because every time the Viet
Cong would start shooting at us someone would shout "Get down!"... and
the black Marines would get up and start dancing!... I think "duck!"
would have been better than "get down!"... of course, nowadays with the
Aflac commercials...
Dale, how does the pay pal work again to send you some money via email?
Hey
Ann, the way you tell dem boyz "Ninos! Ya basta!" only serves to
magnify the way you tell me "You da' man!"... I like the contrast! :)

Alex: Please, do not attempt to even
begin to assume what my spiritual beliefs are. And, do not insult
others by calling anyone "run of the mill" when it comes to their
beliefs simply because they may not wish to follow your belief in
worshiping your ancient god. Dominic: Indeed your use of
the word "plagarism" is correct word, but then again, so are all the
fables and moral stories told and retold, to support any moral code or
ethics, though when compiled all together in a book, such as comprised
the bible, koran, talmut, etc., they become contradicting and therefore
difficult to take literally. When one does, that's where the
fundamentalist aspects come to play out and shortly followed by
dillusional beliefs. Here's a good book to read, The God Dilusion by Richard Dawkins. However, for additional web links on similar subjects check this site out: http://www.sanfords.net/Pagan_Humor_and_Thoughts. John, yes it does appear that Santa and his reindeer were trying to
smuggle a dirty bomb over the Canadian border. NSA wiretap reports
showed that Al Qaeda had infiltrated Santa's Shop at the North Pole
disguised as elves. The Ohio National Guard had no choice but to shoot
Santa down. The F-16s picked up Santa's flight just north of Parma,
Ohio. The Falcons locked onto the infrared trace from Rudolf's nose and
launched 2 AIM-9 heat-seeking sidewinders. Ole' Jolly St. Nick's
reindeer powered sleigh never had a chance :`(

something that adds to the human experience whether it's part of our

Hey John, I did not realize you are a religious Pagan... are you a
Wiccan? You worship nature? Do you worship Osiris or one of those
ancient gods? I did not know, I thought you were just your run of the
mill aetheist. The trouble today is not that Christians get
upset by others' freedom of religion, what agravates man Christians is
the attempt to erase the Christian roots of Christmas and replace them
with pagan stuff... as far as I am concerned you can have at it, go and
worship the sun if you like, worship the earth or worship statues that
have eyes but can not see and ears but can not see, all that worship
these things will become like them, having eyes that can not see and
ears that can not hear. Soon enough we will all find out if indeed
there is a judgement that is coming to each one of us, we are all 25
years closer to finding out from the time we graduated from High
School. Some among us have already found out. Dominic let me
exhort you not to call the inspired Word of God a work of plagiarism,
if anything other works have plagiarized from the Bible, of all ancient
documents the Bible overwhelmingly shows itself to be the most reliable
of all works of literature, and it overwhelmingly has shown itself to
be not just a book, much less a work of plagiarism, but the true
inspired Word of the Living God. Here are a couple of links to web
pages dealing with the reliability of the Bible: http://www.gospeloutreach.net/bible.htmlhttp://www.christiananswers.net/q-abr/abr-a008.htmlhttp://www.bible.ca/indexBible.htmLet
me recommend the book "Evidence that Demands a Verdict" by Josh
McDowell, as well as "What if the Bible had Never been Written" and
"What if Jesus had Never been Born?" both by Dr. D. James Kennedy. Dominic,
be careful not to go into this study trying to prove your bias that the
Bible is a work of plagiarism, get Josh McDowell's and D. James
Kennedy's books, and as McDowell's book says, weigh the evidence and be
careful not to become so opposed to God and His Word because of some
misguided fanatic that, failing to glorify God as God and failing to be
thankful, your heart becomes darkened to the point that no matter what
you are shown you can not see how real and how serious it is that Jesus
Christ, Yeshua Ha' Meshiach, is Lord and that we will all stand before
Him one day in judgement. God will not wrestle with the soul
of man, with your soul, forever, at some point He let's people go their
own stubborn way until they find out too late that, after all, all
those stories in the Bible, and all those warnings, were true. I am
afraid that some among us, at least one, has already crossed the point
of no return, and he has been given over to what the Bible calls "a
reprobate mind" that will never be able to see until he sees himself
cast into outer darkness. I do hope I am wrong in this point. At
any rate, I hope you do study the issue setting aside either bias and I
pray the Lord will grant you understanding. Merry Christmas. By
the way, fewer people died through the whole length of the Inquisition
than through less than one year of the aetheist regimes who had "freed"
themselves from the "shackles of religion" like Stalin's purges, or Pol
Pot's mass murders of Mao Tse Tung's Great Leaps. So, if you are going
to compare the atrocities commited in the name of Christianity, which,
by the way, were commited in fulfillment of Christ's prophechy
regarding misguided "believers" who were really non-believers (The day
will come when they will kill you in my name and think that they do God
service)to the attrocities commited by societies and governments who
had thrown off the moral restraints of Christianity, the aetheists'
murderous rampages into the tens of millions win hands down, there is
not even contest!

John B. Found the web link extremely
interesting. Any other web pages or books out there regarding how the
bible is simply plagiarism? I got a hard core Fundamentalist Christian
Fanatic who is hell bent on ruining x-mas for a lot of people. It sure

(chuckling)
Well, Alex, they all may be forgotten in your world, not in ours.
But
alas, let's not fret...whether the Christians established a rival
celebration, or by force tried to replace pagan celebrations with their
own version of idolatry (re: the crusades, inquisition, heretic
burnings, worshoping of statues and crosses, etc.), it is well know
that pagan followings continue throughout the world and solstice celebrations abound.
It
appears it is the Christians that get most upset and angered by others
who do not think like them (re: book burnings, bannings, boycotts,
etc.), and get offended when others aren't celebrating their version of
the soltice celebration (re: solstice is the returning of the sun...not
the birth of the son as Christians decided to interpret <lol>).
You
see, Alex, your truth may not be others, and visa-versa. So let others
celebrate how they wish and be done. Celebrate joyfully in your fashion
without having to belittle or discount other beliefs simply because
they're yours. History, no matter how it has been interpretted
continues to point out that indeed most Christian celebrations were
"created" even as you state, as a rival to paganism and other religious
beliefs and then through law, wars, and other murderous attempts (re:
"manifest destiny") has attempted to stamp this out. However, the
wonderful diversity in beliefs continues, regardless on how much you
discount them.

Ann, I actually joined the Texas Army National Guard as a
helicopter mechanic before I joined the Marines , but they breeched my
contract when they gave me orders to become a medic. That is when I
went to the Marine Corps recruiter and he handled my discharge from the
Army and I joined the Marines instead, as a field communications guy...
Anyway, I don't know if it is because I get a testosterone rush or
what, but I get a kick out of you saying "you da man!" I da man! I da
man!
Dwight, that's right, Grenada! I missed it! Talking
about the sixth degree, you knew a student that was rescued by the
Marines, and I knew the Marines that rescued him, and you and I know
each other... weird! Yesterday we had a plummer come fix something here
at our house and as we talked he tells me he was in the Marines in
1985, so was I! He was stationed in Camp Lejeune, so was I! He was with
the 2nd FSSG, so was I! He was in H&S Battalion, so was I! He lived
in the barracks at French Creek, so did I! Isn't that weird?!
Aion,
Osiris, Saturn, Cronos... are all but forgotten, but today millions of
people world wide claim to be followers of Jesus Christ and celebrate
His birth during this season. Christmas was established as a rival
celebration, not as a Christianized version of a pagan holiday, Christ
was victorious and this is why all these other gods, and the solstice
celebration, are all but forgotten but Christ is worhsipped by millions
today, except John B.
Pagans have always worshiped trees and the
creature more than the Creator, but the tree of life in the book of
Genesis, the mention of the tree on which the Messiah was crucified are
independently Biblical sources for the Christian Christmas Tree...
The
problem is some people angered and offended by what they think is not
real, which makes no sense (since its not real to them, so they say,
why should it bother them), do all they can to take away from the
celebration of the birth of Christ who alone holds immortality in his
hands. It is not that Christmas and the Christmas symbols were not
established as rivals to the pagan symbols that soundly defeated Osiris
and dem, it is that those whose hearts are in enmity against God do not
like to loose, although they done lost a long time ago. Merry Christmas
to all and to all a good night!

Happy Solstice Everyone! It's been a
while sicne I've read or posted anything on this board but I'm
flattered that I'm in the heart and minds of both annonymous and Loya's
postings <g>. Dwight: Thought I'd give you another
view about the orgins of the Xmas tree. Partially Loya is correct that
the modern Xmas tree is originated in the 16th century in Germany, but
here's some additional background: http://www.bandoli.no/christmas.htmJust
a snippet from the article, "The Christmas tree custom, as we know it,
is essentially a modern tradition, first known in Germany in the end of
the 16th century. It became widespread and popular in the rest of the
world first in the beginning of the 20th century." I've posted in length last year the differences between some Christian's belief and the true
origins and last year Loya also posted an article that supported my
position, though he still decides to interpret that in his own way. Regardless, it is a fun tradition whichever way you choose to use it
and the origins aren't really that important anymore unless you're a
purest (which in modern society is impossible due to all of the
technological advances due to science and religion). I would stick to celebrating Festivus! I'll bring the pole!

Father Loya, thank you for the trivia on the
history of the Christmas tree. It's always nice to learn about
historical religious and ancient anthropological symbols. I'm trying to
start a new one for the 21st century called the Santa Chimney Bong.
It's a 26 foot water cooled combustion cylinder that diffuses the Ether
of Life into the home. The symbol dates back 10,000 years to Cheecheve
and AdamChong from the Garden of Herbs :)
Anacecilia, that certainly qualifies as a minimal degree of separation. If it weren't for friends, life would be boring :)
Dominic,
that is SWEET that you were at the Crossroads concert. A buddy of mine
taped it with this TIVO and made me a DVD of the show. I'll mail you a
copy.
Alex Juarez, very cool to have another reunion in 2006 with the Gilmores. Alison, get yer butt back online and get chattin'!
Michelle Silva? I can't really see her face from that picture.
Alex
Loya, it was Grenada where your Marine buddies rescued the American
medical students. A friend of mine was one of the students rescued
during that operation.

Alex, once again, great pics! You da man! Hey,
by brother isn't a pilot (bad eyes) -- bummer. Anyways, we trains on

it back together. Talk about impressive!
I can't believe Lee
used to "pick" on Bill Parra. They were running buddies. Also, not only
would Lee eat tons of waffles, he would sit in front of the t.v. eating
a full loaf of bread! And he's still thin! So is Mims. They both got
the height and metabolism. Both of which I lack! I don't mind being

Anyway, John M., do the pictures answer your question?... Actually, those combat ops were just practice! Gotcha! :)
No,
I have not yet been in combat, but I may get to be pretty soon, the two
Marines, Kosmas and DeCecco were in combat in Lebanon and in... was it
Haiti? Where our Marines went and rescued a bunch of American students?
Anyway, they were there. I got in after that action and got out before
Panama so I didn't get to go into combat. I know Tennyson was in some
fire fights while he was a Marine. The only time I felt the pre-combat
adrenaline rush was when President Reagan ordered Lybia bombed and
ordered us to get our bags ready to deploy to a combat area, but, as
you know, Khadaffi chickened out so they called it off.

Ann, thank you so much! That warms really warms my heart! I believe
in prayer and, yes, when the time comes I do covet your prayers and the
prayers of all of those among you who believe. So, Ann, your brother is
a soldier? Who is he serving with? What unit? How long has he been
serving?
Yes, Georgina, that's the plan right now, although I
was told that in March I will be moved to Fort Polk, Louisiana, and
then after a few months of pre-deployment training, I will deploy with
"The Patriot Brigade" 4th Brigade, 10th Mountain Division to one of the
two hot spots, Iraq or Afghanistan. That is what soldiers do, and I am
a soldier whose primary military responsability is to bring the Word of
God to my fellow soldiers.
So,John, serving God and country
is,by the grace of God in my life and the nature of the call to
military chaplaincy, one and the same thing. It has been easy so far to
balance my call with my family, since my first call of God is to my
family. Thus far I have been the chaplain of the 3rd and now the 1st
Battalion of the 1st Special Warfare Training Group (Airborne), which
is the school where they make the Green Berets. Since it is a school, I
am non-deployable so I have been able to just go to work like anyone
else, except for the adventure, and then come home in the evening, my
weekends are Friday and Saturday, although I sometimes do work on my
days off, but I always enjoy my work, wether it be preaching to my
soldiers, or hanging off a helicopter with them, I love it!
Now,
The Patriot Brigade is not a school, it is a combat arms brigade, light
infantry, cavalry, artillery, it includes all that is necessary to
deploy at a moment's notice and engage and destroy the enemies of the
United States of America. I am really excited about it, I look forward
to going to war with my soldiers, although I do not look forward to the
suffering I will witness but I will be glad to be there to help relieve
that suffering. My greatest fear is the length of the deployment, I
pray that the 12 months that I am there will go by quickly, or, better
yet, that they would shorten the deployments to no more than six
months. And I pray the Lord will spare my life and let me live until my
little ones are grown, my youngest is a babified three years old.
Anyway,
Dwight, the pagans did use the tree as a symbol before the Christians
did, but the Christmas tree is not taken from the pagans, they are two
independent of each other symbols. The Christmas tree started off as a
symbol of Christians in Germany who kept a tree, I believe hanging with
apples, not as a pagan thing, but as a symbol of the tree of life in
the Garden of Eden mentioned in Genesis in the Bible. They also kept a
triangular shelf where they kept figurines depicting the birth of
Christ, the Christmas story. These two symbols combined to become the
Christmas tree. Thus the Christmas tree, an ever green tree, is a
thoroughly Christian symbol, like the fish, representing the gift of
eternal life that God gave us in His Son Jesus Christ whose birth is
celebrated during Christmas. Thus, next time you see your Christmas
tree remember that it is an ever green to represent eternal life, and
the gifts under it represent the gift that God is offering you in His
Son Jesus Christ who was born to die for your sins, and was raised on
the third day, so that by believing in Him and trusting Him you could
have that gift of eternal life and shine with life like the lights on
your Christmas tree forever! Now, that IS Good News! Merry Christmas!

Ann, check this one out. When my husband and I
were dating, in a visit to Mexico City, he tells me, "a friend from my
office in San Francisco is a painter and is excibiting in a restaurant
"near" zona rosa, think we could find it?". I told him how many
restaurants near and in zona rosa there were so he gave it up. I
decided to take him to one close to the embassy where a friend of mine
was chef. It turned out that my friend and his friend were friends and
in that particular restaurant, weird looking paintings were hanging.
You guessed it, the painter was from San Francisco and it was John's

Ann, I missed that special. I've always
thought there was some mathematical relationship between who you know

Great article Dwight! Just this morning I did our battalion prayer
breakfast and one of the things I spoke on briefly was the thoroughly
Christian background of the Christmas tree as the combination of two
distinctly Christian symbols. Anyway, I despise political correctness
but Menorahs are thoroughly Biblical symbols so I am all for them. I
remember years ago I heard Al Everest being interviewed in New Orleans
on the radio. I called him a couple of times and we talked about
hanging but we never got around to it. I am glad he has done well. Guess
what else? I got a call yesterday from the Chief of Chaplains Office
giving me the good news that they are moving my family and me to Fort
Polk... Louisiana! They are sending me right back home with the Active
Component to serve with the 4th Brigade 10th Mountain Division also
known as "The Patriot Brigade"! Hooah! Here is their link: http://www.jrtc-polk.army.mil/4-10/index.htmThey
didn't waste any time, they told me they picked two other guys and me
because of our prior military service, both in the Marines and as an
Army Chaplain because we would adapt quicker to a change of scenario
from here to Louisiana... and from Louisiana to Afghanistan or Iraq. My
ticket finally got here, I am being deployed to one of these two battle
areas with the Patriot Brigade, 10th Mountain Division. They
told me I will deploy soon after I get to Fort Polk, my report date is
March, which will be here before you know it. It is a good thing, I
would say it is of the Lord if I do deploy from Fort Polk because
Louisiana has been home for many years now, that is where all my babies
were born, that is where my wife was born, that is where her family
lives and I even found out, pursuing the Acadian link of the Loya that
I shared before, that all the surnames in my Loya family, Loya,
Zerassin, Larre and Montez were concentrated in the Attakapas in one
Parish, Vermillion Parish, Louisiana and so were a good number of their
neighbors from San Elizario,Texas I verifed they came to Texas from the
Attakapas, Louisiana sometime before the American Revolution... and now
I am moving into the valley of the shadow of death from the Attakapas,
but "I will fear no evil, for thou are with me, thy rod and thy staff
they comfort me". I see the hand of God, and it comforts me to see Him
move my family and me to Louisiana as my point of deployment, I rest in
that that is a signal to me that it is of the Lord and I will go into
the battle field in His will, which is the best place to be. Of
course, today I got two emails at the same moment, one from CH Goode
from the Chief of Chaplains Office, and one from CH Velez, the Command
Chaplain at Fort Bragg. CH Goode said that he wanted a copy of my
present orders which expire Sept.2007 to get me an early out of those
orders for me to go on with the 10th Mount, CH Velez, on the other
hand, told me not to pack my bags yet, that my present orders don't
expire till Sept.2007. Apparently each of them emailed me after a
conversation they had and now they are buttin heads as to who will get
to keep me until Sept! They are fighting over me! Although I feel like
a school girl for the love of whom two guys are fighting for, that
leaves my family and me unable to plan, which is a bum place to be. If
CH Velez, who is a full bird Colonel, just under General and there are
only two Generals in the Chaplain Corps, gets his way and they keep me
at Bragg till Sept. then i will probably miss being deployed with the
10th Mount, just to be deployed with another unit, the needs of the
Army come first, so if the Chief of Chaplains Office gets its way, I
will be back home in Louisiana by March, and in Afghanistan or Iraq
soon thereafter. I trust, however, that it is all in the hands of the God I serve. Anyway, just sharing a little of my life wit'ya'll!

Dale, I think Alex will like this commentary:
Dobbs: A tree grows in Seattle POSTED: 8:22 a.m. EST, December 13, 2006 By Lou Dobbs CNN
Editor's note: Lou Dobbs' commentary appears every Wednesday on CNN.com
NEW
YORK (CNN) -- Merry Christmas! That's right, Merry Christmas. Whether
you're Christian, Jewish, Muslim, agnostic, pagan, barbarian or
whatever, Merry Christmas!
It's what most of us say in this
country come this time of year. It's about who we are, where we are and
where we've been. And all the namby-pamby, little sensitive darlings
among us who can't handle this verbal assault on their delicate senses
should immediately begin seeking emergency psychiatric care.
This
week we were treated to the spectacle of an easily offended and highly
offensive rabbi who walked into an airport, gazed upon Christmas trees
all around him and suddenly was overwhelmed with an immense, and
apparently irresistible, urge to sue the management of the
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport because nowhere among all the
Christmas trees was a single menorah. Rabbi Elazar Bogomilsky of the
Chabad-Lubavitch movement of Seattle even delivered to the airport's
management a draft of a lawsuit he would file if they didn't sprinkle
menorahs around the Christmas trees.
Political correctness in
this country reached an entirely new level of absurdity some years ago.
But occasionally, and the situation at Sea-Tac is just such an
occasion, we exceed ourselves. The militant fundamentalist rabbi so
flummoxed Sea-Tac management with his threat and their perceived
obligation to be "politically correct" that, rather than think
rationally or simply tell him to stuff it, they started hacking away at
all those artificial Christmas trees and quickly descended into a
public relations nightmare in which they managed to offend reason,
cultural values and the vast majority of Americans.
As CNN
senior legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin told me, "The Supreme Court has
held since 1984, the famous 'Reindeer Rule,' that if a symbol of
Christmas is mostly secular, like a reindeer or a Christmas tree or
Santa Claus, that is not a violation of the separation of church and
state."
The irony that escaped the rabid rabbi and the timid
Sea-Tac management team is that the Christmas tree's likely origin
dates back to pre-Christian pagan cultures. The Christmas tree is not
by any means a religious symbol, and when we're honest about it, the
tree's become a purely commercial symbol more closely associated with
shopping, roasting chestnuts and guzzling eggnog than a nativity scene
with baby Jesus.
And hang on, Christians, because you're in 21st
Century America, and our culture celebrates your holiest day of the
year with such insensitive gusto that our economy would suffer a
serious setback if your religious sensibilities were as easily offended
as those of the litigious rabbi.
More than 140 million shoppers
spent an average of about $360 on Black Friday alone, the day after
Thanksgiving and the unofficial kickoff to the Christmas shopping
season, according to the National Retail Federation. And all those
Christmas shoppers are expected to spend nearly a half-trillion dollars
this shopping season.
Now if I were a fundamentalist Christian,
that might strike me as a little politically incorrect. And I think all
of you folks should think about suing somebody. You know, get in the
spirit of the season.
This mindless movement of political
correctness at all costs is one of the most un-American and crazy
twists in our culture as anything we've witnessed. Remember, we're
Americans, and we have freedom of speech, that whole life, liberty and
the pursuit of happiness thing. Or at least we did.
And I hope
you'll celebrate the Christmas season by offending someone. If you're
Jewish, how about a hearty "Happy Hanukkah" to a good Christian? If
they're offended you've revealed a fool, not such a good Christian and
someone you shouldn't waste your expression of good will upon. But get
ready for a few robust "Merry Christmas" calls to be thrown your way as
well.
The operators of the Seattle-Tacoma airport quickly
righted a potentially dreadful wrong. The rabbi decided not to file a
suit, Christmas trees have sprung back up throughout the concourse, and
no, not a single menorah has been spotted. I can only hope this is the
beginning of a major movement in America, one that regards thinking as
paramount to phony feelings and heightened self-centered sensitivities.
Common sense and judgment should always reign supreme over political
correctness, no matter what the current trend.
And, my gosh,
even Wal-Mart this year has abandoned its generic, politically correct
"Happy Holidays" greeting in favor of "Merry Christmas." I'm starting
to think this may be the season to be jolly after all. Ho, ho, ho.
To all, a Merry Christmas. OK, and a Happy Hanukkah, too.

Hello my friends! I just got back from going on leave to
Disneyworld, my kids had a blast! And guess what? We actually got to
see the Space shuttle blast off all the way from Disneyworld! We were
walking down infront of the castle and into the main street when the
crowd began looking to our right. We looked over and we saw an
orange/yellow glow in the clouds far away like a city's lights
reflecting in the sky, next thing you know there goes the space
shuttle! Awesome! I mean, we saw the huge flame just going up in the
sky and the rockets come off, from 65 miles away! Everybody cheered and
clapped!
Anyway, Georgina, that would be a great day when an American President would give such a speech! Thanks!
Dwight, I am so glad your daughter is ok, who cares about the car!
Rick,
I guess I knew who you are but I done forgot now... it would be great
if we could all just know who you are without having to guess, John
Bauer is lost as a goose and completely wrong, but I still care about
him and pray for him and his family from time to time.
Anaceci,
what a great picture! Isn't that something? How long have we all known
each other? It's been a long time! Your picture only made me remember
just how much a part of each other we at the AHS are, including
spiritually challenged John B. and my buddy Dwight! I love all'a ya'll
bunch'a...!
Ann, and then the looser becomes unhinged and starts hollering "he betrayed this country!"
John
M. and I also saw in the news the Mexican congressmen just coming to
blows like teen agers at a drunken party... or like congressmen in
Taiwan.
Dale, not only does an elf die, but Santa, being the
chief elf, just falls right through the chimney! Merry Christmas to all
and to all a good night!
Oh, by the way, guess what ya'll? I got picked up for Active Duty! Hooah! Although
I have been on active duty since I got back in the military, I was a
mobilized reservist. The week before last the active duty board met and
they picked me out for active duty, that is, the active component of
the Army as opposed to the Reserve component with whom I was mobilized,
and that is great news! I knew the Lord had called me!
Anyway, I gotta go hit the sack!

I've
archived messages 4801-5400, which can be found by following the
archive link at top right above. This should free up some space for
those who want to post pictures.
BTW, the archived pages are
much easier to read if you want to look at a broad span of postings,
such as when you are catching up after a long absence, because there
are 600 postings per page rather than just 15 or so.
And...
Merry Christmas to all of you! I remember Alex Loya's comment (I think)
from a year ago, that every time we say "Happy Holidays" instead of
"Merry Christmas," an elf dies. | | |

Thanks amigos y amigas for your words
concerning my daughter. It's just so friggin scary when something like
that happens to you.
Dominic, the insurance company settled (on
the car) for $2k. I bought it for $350 and put a couple hundred into
it, so I think we came out ahead there. It had 191,000 miles on it and
we can probably get something decent for the car settlement. The
medical will be a completely different deal. I have good insurance, but
all my copays, time, etc. will be reimbursed by State Farm as they are
required to do so by law. Add that to my health insurance company
recouping it's money. My rates shouldn't go up a penny as Chelsea
wasn't cited. And, when Chelsea turns 18 this month, she'll have two
years to make any claims, medical or otherwize herself should any long
term pain or suffering come about.
Ann, she was pretty sore for
the first week, and has experienced neck pain and stiffness
commensurate with an impact of the force such as the one that totaled
her car. We've taken her to the doctor and we're monitoring her
musculoskeletal and overall health. I'll keep you all posted.
Dang,
sounds like a bunch of sore Obrador losers down in Mexico. Be like Al
Gore and get over it. Or maybe not, cause Al probably is still pouting
from the 2000 election :)
Hey everyone! I went to see Carlos
Mencia live last Friday. What an AWESOME show! Man, I don't know if
it's politically correct to say this, but Carlos is my favorite Beener.
He was born in Honduras, but his mom is from Mexico.

It did not snow at all in Arlington and not
much ice and only a little rain but i heard it was worse in Dallas and
north of here. No office closings. I cannot remember when I was here
last but I think it was Loya go knew who I was. Even though clown Bauer
said I was nobody but I expect that her now. If you have a position

John M, Ann and US friends. Today, Dic.
1st.,Felipe Calderon took oath as Mexico's new President. Anybody who
has experienced the thrill of having your team make a touchdown or a
goal, knows exactly how this felt. Today, as we were wondering if the
"oath" could take place, Calderon and Fox made it to the stands.
(Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the looser, had threatend not to let this
happen and for the last couple of days, diputados were fighting each
other)(literally). I felt like if the Seleccion Mexicana had made a Gol
in a World Cup. YES !!!! 3 minutes and he was out of Congress, then
went on to the Auditorium and delivered his inaguaration speech. Very
eloquent. Meanwhile in the City, the sore looser, AMLO, was parading.
He didn't get any coverage from the media, and it was later anounced
that the "manifestacion" was over. Of course, there are no schools,
banks and anything today so it has been a tv day, but we certainly hope
for and pray that after today, things cool down and we can all go on
living in this beautiful country. The peso has been, and is, stable and
foreign investment is welcome. Bush father is here, as many other world
leaders, and they are enjoying lunch at Antropolgia and later on will
have dinner at Chapultepec Castle. Today has defenitely made the
history books. As for the question on your students, they could come
home. (Unless they live in Oaxaca, and that my friend, is another
story).

I have a question for anyone living in Mexico
City. Two of my students are young girls from the D.F. who are in
Canada to learn English. They tell me that they have extended their
visas because their parents want them to stay away from Mexico a little
longer. My question is: What is going on in Mexico? My students were
talking about stuff I had not heard...tent cities on the Periferico,
mass disruptions, y muchos otros pedos. Are they being melodramatic or
is the situation that tense?

hurt, but If I was your daughter i'd start saying I have this nagging
pain in my back/neck that comes and goes away, i'd be visiting the
chiroprator, letting my lawyer do the rest and in a few months she can
be driving a 2007 whatever she wants. The insurance company really
dosen't give a rats ass to what really happened and they are ready to
underpay for the value of her car and ready to raise her insurance
premiums.

Dominic, at the beginning of th UC-Rutgers
game there weren't that many students in the student section. As the
game went on more showed up. Also a lot of fans stand and drink beer
around the first level, but it certainly wasn't sold out. UC is mostly
a commuter school with only 10 percent of the students living on
campus. But, you'd think a nationally televised game on ESPN would
bring out the fans.
Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I'm headed over to the in-laws today to eat more TURKEY! :)
P.S.
