Parking

On-street parking is very limited in the UIC vicinity, with either short-term meters or "zone" parking limited to residents with city permits. The police actively ticket illegal parkers and expired meters.

Paid parking is available in a three-story parking structure located on the northeast corner of the intersection at Halsted and Taylor streets. Metered parking is available at the Halsted St. entrance. Hourly parking is available at the Halsted St. or Taylor St. entrances. Hourly rates start at $3.75 for 30 minutes and reach $12 for 4.5 hours. If you are coming by expressway, you should exit from the Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/94) at Taylor street and head west.

To walk to the Department of Computer Science from that parking structure, exit the parking structure and walk west across Halsted. The large buildings on the left are ERF (Engineering Research Facility, the southernmost building) and SEL (Science and Engineering Laboratories), which house most of the Computer Science Department research and instructional laboratories. Computer Science offices are found in both of those buildings, and in the Science and Engineering Offices building, located due west approximately 200 yards. (You can't miss it; it's a 13 story building, the smaller of the two high-rise office buildings on campus.

Public transportation

The Chicago area is served by two major public transportation agencies: the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), which runs the light rail (subway and elevated train) and bus system in the city of Chicago, and the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA), which operates the Metra suburban commuter rail line and the Pace suburban bus system. We highly recommend the RTA trip planner, which provides detailed timetable and trip planning information covering both systems and interconnections between them.

If you are taking the CTA train (the "El"), you should plan to arrive at the UIC-Halsted stop on the Blue line. From the El station, walk southwest about 400 yards through the campus toward the Science and Engineering Offices (SEO) building to reach the Computer Science Department. (SEO is a 13-story high-rise, the smaller of two high-rises on the campus.)

Note: If you are coming to UIC from either of the two major Chicago airports, O'Hare International or Midway, we highly recommend the CTA train for transportation to UIC. The trip will take about 60 minutes from either airport, at a cost of $2.25. From O'Hare you can take the Blue line directly to the UIC-Halsted stop. From Midway you can take the Orange line to Clark/Lake and then transfer to the Blue Line heading towards Forest Park and exit at the UIC-Halsted stop.

Air & Rail information

The Chicago area is served by two major airports: O'Hare International Airport and Midway Airport. They are approximately equidistant from UIC. If you are coming to UIC from either of the two major Chicago airports then we highly recommend the CTA train for transportation to UIC. The trip will take about 60 minutes from either airport, at a cost of $2.25.

Rail transportation is available from Amtrak, the U.S. rail carrier. Trains arrive in Chicago at Union Station, which is approximately an eight-block walk from the UIC campus (see map).

Chicago hotels, dining, events, & entertainment

Two local hotels that we recommend are

The University of Illinois website lists Chicago hotels with UIC rates:

There are many web sites which provide extensive information on the City of Chicago and its attractions. You might want to look at:
